casual gamers don't know and don't care about issues, like 4-way and 8-way.
only hardcore gamers want arcade quality sticks, buttons, and trackballs.
that's why i've modded all my machines, except the ms pac-man barcade.
it can be played with an 8 way joystick.
i have no problem playing 4 way games, with sticks like that. not really a problem,
unless the game is coded wrong, and doesn't ignore the inputs.
i am an old timer, so playing wih broken joysticks, or subpar ones was part of the
arcade experience for me.
i had no idea back then that there was a difference in 4/8 way joysticks. (although 2 directional,
and diagonal ones on qbert i knew).
so i got used to making do with whatever there was.
at home, i have a custom 8 way arcade stick, i use for playing arcade games on the xbox.
so even pac games, etc, work.
there's no contradiction for me.
when i buy an arcade 1up, i expect there to be issues, sure i could get use to them,
but if i'm serious about playing a specific game, i mod the controls. otherwise if its
something i don't bother about, its fine as is.
if i was a pro at burgertime (which i'm not), maybe it would bother me.
but i'm casual at that game, so an 8 way is fine for it. same with frogger/time pilot,
i'm terrible at frogger, but great at time pilot, so again, the 8 way stick is fine for that.
