HD6000 or HD5000 series

I'm using a Wells Gardner K7000 but am still unsure what ATI card to go for, definitely want the VGA output so anything about HD6000 series is out.

As it stands during 2020, what would we be looking at?

I had very little luck with a 5450 myself.
Had great success with a 6670 card after that.

And I have a 7670 yet to try (which does in fact have a vga out so don't lose heart.)

Search for ATI hd vga and see what you find.

It appears to be some cards work with particular boards and chipsets better than others from my experience.

Remember, a DVI-I output *is* a VGA output. You just use a passive adapter to turn one shape plug into another. That means you can go something like an R7 250 or whatever. Just remember to check the card can use Atom15 if you want that too.

I've used a few 5450's. One of which produced muddy, washed out brown colours compared to the other, which worked fine. But nothing wrong with something a bit newer too.

I was skeptical at first, but a refurbished R7 250x on windows 10 enterprise works wonders with crt_emudriver (crimson version tho, adrenalin based drivers gave me odd issues).

I'm using an r9 380x 4 gig  that's working great. I think it was about $30 more than the lower tier 1 gig cards.

Yes, but a 190w GPU maybe overkill for a emulation..or not xD

Which drivers did you use for the r9 380x?

Does ATOM15 work with the r9 380x?

Did You had VGA port on ribbon instead straight from PCB? In the past I observed bad picture when I used VGA output instead of DVD-I which was the only port soldered into PCB. I didn't have problems with card that have two DVI-I soldered on PCB.

From memory no. I think it had two DVI-I outputs. But TBH it's too long ago to remember. I got rid of the card in like 2018.
