Original control panel Heights too low for us grown ups?
« on: July 22, 2020, 09:24:26 pm »

After building my cab and having some friends play on it, we found our wrists get a bit sore because our hands are at different angles to when we were a foot shorter. Anyone else find this? And did you do anything about it? For my cab, I am going to simply make a plinth from four bits of wood for it to sit on. Hoping 50mm higher ought to help...

I really felt that way when I played an original Donkey Kong last year. It seems much to low to me now. I was very uncomfortable playing it.

Just wait until you try to fit inside an environmental cabinet.  You can kinda swing your way into Pole Position but Missile Command and Discs of Tron probably aren’t happening.

Lol yeah.. my fat ass can't squeeze into most of the cockpits anymore.  I built my original mame cab oversized because of the height thing and I'm probably going to finally get rid of it for the same reason.  Have you tried stools?  There these things you sit on when things are too low so that you become lower.  Just sayin'...

I found my Xenon to be painfull in every way.

If standing, then the CP was too low and gave wrist ache and back ache.

When sitting, the CP was too low underneath and my knees couldn't go underneath it so I ended up either far too low or too far away and leaning forward. And then the screen was too high. So this gave a back ache and a neck ache.

I'm sure all of this is because the original cab builders didn't expect anybody to be standing or sitting in front of it for any longer than 2 and a half minutes.

Now it's rebuilt and unrecognizable as a Xenon it's built around my personal proportions.

So have I.

Trouble is I don't have an adjustable neck, back or arms.

Never knew that was from a movie.  Also love how its associated Wikipedia page helpfully mentions that the laser disc version is out of print.

You owe it to yourself to watch Crazy People.  The hello song alone is worth the price of admission.

Does it mention VHS? My DVD rewinder is broken, so I'm watching everything on the VCR these days.

Maybe I'm used to Nintendo cab height because mine feels pretty good but otherwise I agree.  I'm 6'-0" and in decent shape (and probably good shape for my age).

I'm (almost) 6' tall but with orangutan length arms and still anything with a control panel front edge lower than 36" is uncomfortable for me.

For those of us without any real cabinets within swimming distance...

What is the CP height of your average Nintendo cab anyway?

Being a short ass its not a problem I have, Infact I am mostly the perfect height to play most Arcade cabs with my wrists rested comfortably on the CP :D

I have problems standing for long periods, so cocktail or 1up caberet is the best.  Plus one comfy chair, grape soda and my Rush mixtape (deezer).

Great topic I actually never thought about this.. my cabinet is a taito ...cp sits about 36" off the ground.. seems okay never had any wrist problems but what you're saying makes a lot of sense considering they were made for kids and teenagers to play I never thought about how that translates to the adult player on an original cabinet

Being quite tall, I have the same problem.
I thought an adjustable stool would solve it, but your knees stop you from getting close enough to the CP and you end up stretching out your arms.
As you say, it wasn't designed for cross-country ;-)
