What cabinet is this?
« on: July 20, 2020, 05:19:35 pm »
Hey,

It’s been a while since I’ve frequented the site. I kind of moved away from arcade stuff and jumped down the rabbit hole that is video game collecting. Anyway, this guy had a lot of 80 nes games and an arcade cabinet that he customized with an NES inside. I wanted the NES games and he wouldn’t split the lot so I just bought everything. Since there’s no real market for an arcade cab with an NES inside I figured I’d just try to sell the cab gutted. The problem is I have no idea what kind of cab it is. Anyone have any ideas?

Is that picture distorted?  If not then it's just a custom cab with REALLY strange proportions AFAICT.

When an attached image looks distorted like that, put the URL in IMG tags and set the width to 1024 (or less) like below.
- Forum image handling plugin has problems with EXIF rotation for very large files.

Even corrected the over bezel and marquee area are odd.  I don't recognize it so I think it's probably a custom cab.  I could be wrong though.

The closest I can find is Root Beer tapper but that seems a bit of a stretch.

I don't see a profile like that in any of the eight silhouette cab identification images in the File Repository.   :dunno

P.S. The bezel and CPO are from a Popeye (Nintendo) cab and it looks like there's no top over where the marquee would normally be so I definitely agree with Howard on it probably being a custom cab.

Looks like the two differences are:

  1. The lower-back corner on Cliff Hanger has an angled cut.

  2. The top of the marquee area on your cab.
- Where is the marquee guide or attachment point for the marquee?
- Where is the top panel?
- I don't see any signs that any brackets, guides, or panels were removed.

Maybe it's a custom cab (mostly) router-copied from a Cliff Hanger.   :dunno

It's Crown's Golf. No lower notch on the back, but otherwise very similar to Cliffhanger. Like Cliffhanger, the marquee is set far back from the lower lip of the marquee. It's a bit unusual compared to the way other marquees are set very close to the front edge. It's hard to tell from the angle of the OP's original pic, but it looks like the coinbox in his machine is centered. Crown's Golf also has a centered coin box. I'm guessing the OP's machine also only has one speaker cut out in the center below the marquee.

Man that's an odd one.  I don't understand that engineering.... is the marquee wooden or something?  I ask because I don't see anything holding it on top.

I was wondering why my coin door was centered. I saw someone on here that found what they said was a cliffhanger and that also had a centered coin door so I thought maybe it was a variant or something. The cab they found did have 2 speaker grills though. Mine has one.

Yes please send pics of the marquee.

The sure fire way to tell if Cliffhanger was ever installed is to look behind that diamond plate.  Cliffhanger had a front access tray, often with vents to keep that troublesome laserdisc player from overheating.  If there isn't a door down there then I'm almost certain it isn't a cliffhanger.  Hell I'm almost certain now as that cab was valuable 20 years ago... can't imagine someone dumb enough to gut it unless it was done in the 80's or something.

All of that being said.... if it were me and I had decided on "restoring" it to an original cab look, I'd probably go with cliffhanger other than a dumb old Crown's Golf....  Laserdisc game parts are notoriously expensive due to the collector's market, but you you don't care about getting original parts you could probably get a marquee, cpo and sideart printed for under $200.  Then you'd just need to get the paint codes from some laserdisc enthusiasts.
