Saw some guy did an astro city bartop on Kickstarter and then ghosted everybody. Figured I’d just make my own. Fun COVID project. Coming along. Lots still to do

Yeah what a doofus. I would love to own one of those, but I guess the amount of work you have to put into the woodworking alone is staggering.

Your's looks amazing already; care to talk a bit about the building process, techniques you used etc?

Sure, I found plans for the full size one somewhere (I’ll dig up a link) and then just reduced the scale of all measurements to 58% of the original. 29” monitor scaling down to a 17”. Then I plotter printed it.

I made some adjustments on the plans in ink, pulled the control panel in a bit, shifted a few angles around to give lines I liked more. Then I cut out the pieces and traced onto wood.

Construction is a mix of .5” and .75” mdf. Pocket holes and glue. Bondo for the big curves up front. Still need to do a lot before paint. Got some sanding and shaping to do. Few other odds and ends. Taking it slow, enjoying the process.

Fantastic start, I hope it works out well for you. And yes, the guy making those for Kickstarter is a goobus. Nowadays he just makes Raspberry Pi handhelds styled after NGPC with his 3d printer and sells them privately to Neo Geo forum members for obscene amounts of money.

Wow that thing looks so great. Would you mind posting a few more pics and maybe dimensions (unless you are going to sell) I’d love to have a go at building on. I always wanted a candy they are just way to big for my house.

Thanks

I would love to have a dollar for every post where someone asks for dimensions or plans for a cab and then doesn't do ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- with them.

I don't like the idea of bartops in general, but for some reason it seems right for a candy cab. This one has nice lines. I look forward to seeing progress.

I came in here after reading the name and expecting some horrific Bartop called atrocity. Turns out it’s Astrocity not atrocity.

Looks great.

You have 5 posts going back more than a decade. All of them are asking for plans. What have you built so far in the 10+ years you have been asking?

Hey sweetie

I have restored
A taito sit-down
A lowboy (Australian)

I have had
Super Speed Race
4 player NBA jam
And a tekken 6 clone.

I have only build one bartop (that was not very good). I more read on the forum. Why is that?

Exactly why I posted that comment. Dipshits like you ask for plans all of the time and never use them. It is annoying. Just build something.

I am done fighting in this guys thread.

This is a good build it doesn't need me mucking it up.

Could you in the future at least try to have considerations like that before stinking up the place? Do some yoga or read a book, man, in any case take your aggressions someplace else. I don't have a problem with harsh honesty, but with you, I get the impression you're always waiting for somebody to post something to be pissed off about. This isn't the place for that.

Hi! Did some more work on this. Busy summer. Moved households and other stuff but recently was able to put in some hours.

Playable but not yet complete.

CPO is temp. Need to design one that is reminiscent of Astro City. Need to work on sideart. Need to finish the marquee - including a green gel for the light...or just getting green LEDs, whichever is cheaper.

Let me know what you think.

Nice. So is that basically carbon fibre styled contact paper that you're using?

It looks pretty slick. Reminds me of the days before custom artwork was readily available, when everyone was covering their control panels with marble styled contact paper (which never looked as bad as some people claimed).

Thanks! It’s been a fun project so far.

I’ll get some interior pics up later but it’s just an old pc shoehorned in there. The build is 58% in size to an Astrocity. It’s running a 17” monitor (58% of the 29” Astrocity monitor). It’s roughly 18x18 and 24 tall.

Carbon fiber is just cheapo auto vinyl from Amazon. I like it for the bezel. CP will change. Marquee will get partially covered with an Astrocity style center graphic.

Looks good! I like that the design is holding up from the original cabinets.

If i were you, I'd clearcoat it and polish it a bunch. Get that nice reflective sheen. That would match the original cabinet's gelcoat fiberglass look a lot closer than just painted surface.

You’re right but oof. I wonder if I can just hit it with car wax and the ol’buffer lol

Thanks, I really love the shape. It’s not exact, but I think it’s a close enough representation

I love this thing - very cool design.  How did you mirror the curved area on both sides of the cabinet?  Did you cut matching shapes or is it just a lot of bondo that you sanded to match?  It looks really nice.
