Defender opinions please - MAME or 19 in 1
« on: February 19, 2020, 05:27:53 pm »
Completing a refurbishment of this Defender, very difficult to locate a 19" CRT in this part of the world, so going with an LCD

Could I please get opinions on which option will run Defender more accurately - latest MAME build or 19 in 1 multi-board (which I have).

I can get nice scan lines with MAME BFGX or a scan line generator added onto the 19 in 1.

But obviously the 19 in 1 is running a much older version of MAME and is therefore less accurate?

Cheers

It doesn’t necessarily have to be an Arcade CRT, a TV from the 90’s that has the same tube (hell it doesn’t even have to be from then), can work as an Arcade CRT.  With a little effort you can modify the chassis and send the RGB and sync signals natively.

Here’s someone working on it now:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,161834.0.html

He provides good links and descriptions.

Finding 19” TV’s on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace only takes a little time, effort, and patience.

The accuracy is going to do with more of how good of a player you are. I recently swapped out my Defender mame cabinet from a PC to the 19-n-1. I think they both play identical to me. The upside to the 19-n-1 is it's solid state, so you can power it off and on without any risk to mame and it's the fastest booting machine in my line up. The downside to the 19-n-1 is it doesn't save your high scores. If the high scores a deal breaker to you, then go with mame. If you're a pro player, there may be some nuance to the game that you would pick up.

Not a pro player but good point about the high scores, hadn't thought of that - be nice to keep those

No, never tried a Pi for anything yet but always had the impression that full PC MAME would always be superior, plus I am more familiar with a desktop :-)

The 19-in-1 saves high scores if you switch on the DIP. Or doesn't it work for Defender?

For accuracy you want a JROK at $250.

Almost as accurate (not noticeably different) run groovymame with framedelay 7 or 8.

On forums jimmer speaks for himself as a Defender fan, not as proprietor of www.jbgaming.co.uk  << Is that advertising or disclosure ? or both ?

JROK Multi Williams all the way. It’s the most accurate you can get, aside from the original pcb.

But it’s JAMMA (same with the 19-in-1). Are you planning on wiring that Defender cab to JAMMA? You’ll certainly have to if you plan on replacing the original boards with these newer ones.

I'll kick in a vote for Retropie. I've been running it for years and love it. I know you just want to get it done for reasonable money and that will do it.

In the future I would also recommend a multi williams control panel.

also saw your post on KLOV too and PM replied.
