CRT TV availability in your town?
« on: February 12, 2020, 09:02:42 pm »

So it wasn't too long ago, maybe two years or so  that I could find working CRT TV's by the side of the road for hard rubbish collection. But just this last year or so it seems the supply had finally dried up. I found one 34cm telly, useful for 80's PCs like the C64.

So that's the situation in my city in Australia and I suspect in Australia in general. What's it like in your neck of the woods?

In Western NY of the USofA and yeah, they were everywhere a few yrs ago.
I got a bunch of flat tubes with Svideo and a few component in my basement.
a bunch of rounded tubes with mostly composite.
Two round tubes with build in DVD players.
All 19 or 20 inch TV's.
I think i'm set for a bit.

Not too many crt's at the thrift shops these days that I want.
all generic 19/20" with composite input.
I was grabbing those for $5 a piece a few yrs ago.

I'd love a 25 or 27 inch but no dice.
FB market place has them. some for free, some actually think someone will give them $20 for a 20" Orion crt.

Finding a tv is easy... finding a large, round tube crt that'll play nice with light guns, with component and s-video hookups is the tricky part.

Kijiji in my city reveals a dozen CRT TVs for sale currently.

I'm sure there are more lurking in thrift stores and pawn shops.

My 27" Panasonic with Pana-black tube will be pried out of my cold, dead hands.

Houston craigslist has a ton of tube TVs.  I drove by some donation station for "Military Order of the Purple Heart" a few years ago and they had a literal mountain of them piled up.  Far too much of my time was just wasted trying to find pics of it on Google Maps but apparently that thing is long gone.  Their website specifically asks you not to donate tube tvs.   :lol

I've been looking for a 17" CRT monitor for months now and no luck.  I mean, eBay works but I don't think I should be paying $100+ for one... Ugh.

I still have 2 CRT TVs, and a few CRT monitors, but they stay only while they work. Once they die, out they go.

Theres still quite a few of the small TV/VHS combos knocking around, I have 2 of them in my loft.

But trying to find a decent playing size one (17/19”) is really difficult.

You get the occasional large one up for grabs but I do t have the room them so they are a no go.

I have a 17" compaq crt monitor on my shelf in the basement. I got it with the P4 desktop for free about 5 yrs ago.  ::)
i do not need it.
It's behind a small mountain of junk right now but I plan on cleaning house this month.
When I get to it i'll plug it in and see if it works.

you can have it for the cost of shipping.

Buying one isn't a problem, I'm just sad the freebies seem to have dried up. Also, charity shops in Australia don't do AC electrical appliances anymore because of liability :(

Same experience out here in Hawai'i as many other places apparently.
Used to see them all over and recently...
poof.

If I see them at all now people want $50+ for them.

The lady of the house (rightfully) accuses me of being a hoarder.
Not as impressive as Arroyo's stable, but I've got 4 Trinitrons, a Panasonic, 2 Philips and an Orion in the workshop.

One of the Sony's is a 36" that I think will make a hell of a dedicated 4 player cab-

-if I can figure out how to make it work properly (or even reasonably well?) that is.

Bobby
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools! I can fix it.

I have the luxury (honour?) of living quite close to some guys who are CRT gurus. Once I have my workshop set up (we are building a new house), and coronavirus stuff dies down I will start to pick their brains on repairing them. Will add an extra layer to the hobby  :)
