Updated list!

I strongly recommend switchres program by @Calamity to avoid having to install all game modelines.

Hi,

Care to explain how you do it without installing modelines ?
I can't figure it out, I thought you had to install correct modelines to let switchres pick them up?

Thanks !

He's using the (long promised) Switchres standalone binary (see attachment).

Gracias compa !  :laugh:
Now, let's see if I can get through it.

Edit : OK let's pretend I want to run C:\game.exe with 352x248 resolution @60hz with arcade_15 preset (already within ini file).
Am I correct assuming that
Code: [Select]
switchres 352 248 60 -l c:\game.exe will run it and revert back to original resolution upon exit ?

Thanks.

Yes, that's the idea. You probably need to wrap the exe command with "" if spaces are required.

If -allow_hardware_refresh is enabled in switchres.ini, new modes will be added dynamically (no need to use VMMaker for that, Switchres uses the same mechanism as VMMaker for adding/removing modes on the fly). You may hear a plug/unplug sound from your Windows os though, due to this.

If -allow_hardware_refresh is disabled, Switchres will try to update your existing modelines, just like GM does, without adding new modes.

BTW this version of maldita castilla is way better for CRT than the ex version, you'll get full screen on a 15khz monitor.
Enable vsync in config.ini if it isn't to remove tearing.
Resolution is 256x224@60

Thanks! I didn't know about this version.

Updated list and added spreadsheet for more details (input controller, size in MB)

Hey, may I ask what Kirisade Blade  I & II are ?
My google-fu skills might be rusted but I didn't find any info regarding these titles.

Thanks !

I'm testing Street of Rage Remake 5.2 and seems vsync it's fixed now!

Widescreen ON (with off fails)
Vsync OFF
Enabled Aero / Composition desktop

Put BORDERLESS in mod/system.txt

Native resolution 416x240@60.

Hyper DBZ Champ’s build is a must have, as well. Incredible mugen powered game  :)
Runs like a breeze natively 320x240@60
I actually prefer to play this one over dbz figterz, it’s funnier.

Odd, I have no tearing at all (windows 10).
What OS are you running ?
You can try to change the renderer setting to SDL, it 's located in data folder under mugen.cfg

Only changes I've done so far :

Code: [Select]
;Game native width and height.
 ;Recommended settings are:
 ;  640x480   Standard definition 4:3
 ; 1280x720   High definition 16:9
 ; 1920x1080  Full HD 16:9
GameWidth = 320;1280
GameHeight = 240;720

Code: [Select]
;Set to 1 to enable fullscreen mode, 0 for windowed.
FullScreen = 1

You should be able to remove tearing (hopefully) messing here

Code: [Select]
[Video]
 ;The video resolution defaults to the same as the game resolution.
 ;You can force an alternate resolution by uncommenting the lines
 ;below.
;Width  = 1280
;Height = 720

 ;This is the color depth at which to run MUGEN.
 ;Only 16 is supported at this time.
Depth = 16

 ;Set to 1 to enable vertical retrace synchronization. Do not enable
 ;if BlitMode = PageFlip.
 ;Not supported in 1.0.
VRetrace = 0

 ;Set to 1 to enable fullscreen mode, 0 for windowed.
FullScreen = 1

 ;Drawing mode
 ;Choose from Normal (fast) and PageFlip (less image "tearing")
BlitMode = PageFlip

 ;Screen rendering mode.
 ;System - default SDL rendering mode (e.g. windib in Windows)
 ;DirectX - DirectX 5 renderer
 ;OpenGLScreen - hack that allows window resizing but could be slow
RenderMode = OpenGLScreen

I'm in W7x64, i have tried all parametres  :banghead:

I think with windowed mode no suffer tearing at all, i will try workaround with fullscreen borderless.

Yeah I feel you man.
When I was on W7, there was no way to remove tearing from all mugen and openbor stuff. And from some doujins as well.
It's all solved now with Win10, maybe something related with desktop composition (always active in win10).

You could try to reenable it just to see if it fixes the issue (in case it's been disabled).

EDIT : Or you could change your OS. I won't ever go back to W7, W10 LTSC is faster and can be hidden easily without any dirty hack.

I found the problem and the solution. Mugen 1.0 it's very slow on my PC (it's deprecated version, only uses 1 core). I updated to 1.1 with OpenGL and now it's perfect and runs very fast!

Glad you sorted it out  :applaud:
By the way, the DBZ archive file is missing some characters (krillin, c18) and some stages as well.
They have to be downloaded separately and manually installed.

Hi all!

Five new ready cabinet games!

Cyber Shadow                     400x240@60
Binky's Trash Service            320x240@60 (F4 autohotkey for fullscreen)
Binary Star Infinty              320x240@60
Street Cleaner: the video game   400x240@60
Touhou Luna Nights               640x480@60

(*) I discovered XOutput program for major steam compatibility games, it's a great another alternative joy2key and x360ce.

This topic is a GREAT idea, and we need to add more shmups :)

I'm thinking about Cave games for steam : Mushihimesama, Deathsmiles, Dodopachi Resurrection. And also Psikyo games for steam : Dragon Blaze, Zero Gunner, Gunbird, Strikers 1945 etc.

Let's take Mushihimesama (Steam version)

TL;DR
Nice resolution for consumer CRT TV : 320x240@60
Best resolution for "31KHz" CRT Monitor : 640x480@60

I had very good results by running this game at 320x240@60 on a CRT TV : no scrolling/tearing problem, picture is crisp and clean.
But I also had the feeling it could be better : Mushihimesama sprites have been redone in higher resolution (Steam port comes from Xbox360 port)

So : for a perfect result you have to find a PC CRT Monitor that can handle 640x480  non-interlaced (480p)
I use this modeline with a Sony Multiscan 200ES :
Modeline    "Mode 0" 25.18 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync

In-game Screen settings are very important.

Screen settings (for 480p)
  • Smoothing ON  (Really needed for nice backgrounds)
  • Zoom 150% ( I had initially  some random streched lines/pixels when I put other values for "Zoom".)
General screen settings
  • Aspect ratio 4:3
  • Rotate Left Roll
  • Link Rotation ON

The difference between 240p vs 480p on a CRT for this game :

Yeah, these titles are not on my list because they already exist in arcade or console ports. Most of them in PS2 with 640x240 on a CRT consumer have very good results.

Your best bet it's 640x480 or 854x480 for 4:3 aspect.

Underrated thread.. here's Undertale running on my Multisync at 320x240.

It's sometimes hard to see what the monsters say during battle but honestly this looks so much better to me than the game running on a fixed resolution display with faux scanlines through something like an OSSC that it's worth it IMO.

Hi,

Today i have finally got two titles (great shoot'em ups) that i didn't get configure controls properly in my cab:
- Sky Force Anniversay  640x480@60i
- Sky Force Reloaded    640x480@60i

The first one, with XOutput works well, only mention for map controls you need to press "ALT" key when execute the game first time.
The second one is more dificult but possible with XOutput and HIDGuardian (maybe more easy with x360ce 4 with HIDGuardian too), the steps are:
 1. Enable startup HIDGuardian XOutput and enable it for joystick devices (this prevents HIDGuardian hide to Xoutput dinput joysticks)
 2. Set affectedDevices entry register with HID joystics, you can see how on this video

 3. Export regedit affectedDevices key with joysticks (hidguardian_yes.reg) and the same register but without HIDs (hidguardian_no.reg)
 4. Only you need is a batch program for execute game with this steps:
     1. regedit /S hidguardian_yes.reg (with this line when reconnect devices hidguardian hide them for programs)
     2. start /min "" "XOutput.exe" (with this line start xinput emulation for dinput joysticks)
     3. devcon.exe restart "HID\VID_2341&PID_8036*" (this is my HID joysticks, you need to put yours; with this line restart devices and hidguardian hide them)
     4. execute game
     5. taskkill /IM XOutput.exe /f (kill xoutput process)
     6. regedit /S hidguardian_no.reg (restore registry with no hide joysticks)
     7. devcon.exe restart "HID\VID_2341&PID_8036*" (this is my HID joysticks, you need to put yours; with this line restart devices and hidguardian show them again)

It's a little tricky but works  ;D

Hi! Anyone know which is the correct resolution for Alex kidd Dx?
I got the closer to perfect on 480x270, but the text still doesn't display right.
Thanks!

I also found ZeroRanger to be a good vertical shump in my opinion. It seems to work right on 240p.

Has anyone been able to get any of the newest Street Fighter games working? (SF IV, IV Ultra, V)

Not tested, but the base of Alex Kidd's graphics seems to be of 640 x 360:

But then if you have the HUD, portraits and whatnot designed at a higher rez, you can't expect them to look "right". It's an awful "feature" even for flat panels usage but overly present these days. (In this game's case, it's clearly an afterthought as it was going to have 384 x 288 graphics in its original fan game form. It's not that we're missing much, it seems, anyway.)

Hello!

First of all, a big thank you to everybody, Calamity, Psakhis, and so many more who I have scrolled through comments and replies of while building my PC to CRT setup. I've avoided replying and asking where possible, since I always figured if I keep searching/pondering enough, I may not need to bother anybody with a query. I'm a bit stumped at the moment though.

I want to run some games from my Steam Library that would, like many in this list, suit themselves really well to a CRT setup. I downloaded the switchres zip in this thread and I'm embarrassed to say I just don't know what the heck I'm doing. I've attached what I'm seeing since, I look at it and read peoples settings in here, and I'm just unsure how it is supposed to look, so I think if anybody could perhaps take a moment, and just break it down for me as simple as taking any game and an example of inputting it into the ini file.

Thanks for any help, and any questions I can answer that'll help you help me, just let me know and I'll get on it.
