New Bartop Project - 19" LCD 4:3 - Spincade Classic
« on: February 04, 2020, 10:15:26 am »
Hey everyone,

I opened a thread asking some questions in another area and I have decided to proceed with this project.  I wanted a dedicated spinner cabinet but by the time I bought the controls and saw I was going to drop another $200 for the cabinet I changed my thinking as I could only find about 40 or so games that I'd play with a spinner.  It was tough for my mind to justify a $300+ for 40 games.  :)

I decided to go with a 4-way joystick and 3 button setup on the left hand side and then a spinner setup on the right hand side.  I have 4/8 way controllers in my main cab but I typically always use the 8 way so I thought this would be a good way to represent the 4-way games correctly.  I also wanted to stay 4:3(I know the risk) but I just am not a fan of 22"wide screen LCDs cropped so much so I found a guy on ETSY who had the setup I wanted but missing the plastics, which I i'll buy and cut accordingly.  Also cut for T-Molding but not included, $115 shipped and this is arriving today.

Using Rasberry Pii but not sure I am a fan of it as I normally just use an i5, but due to size restrictions I feel it is the only option...i'll need to test more once everything is installed.

I bought a spintrak and configured fine with Mame/RetroPi, seems fluid but it is not in the cab yet.  :)

That is all I have for now. :)

Site I bought from...looks like it is down to $95, which I think is $10 cheaper and he did custom cuts.

Good luck as you get started!

$300 to play 40 games is bad you say? Hmmm, I probably shouldn't have spent nearly $800 to build my cabinet that I only use to play 20-30 vertical classics then huh? :laugh2: :laugh2:

To me  :) - to each their own, right!  I built my first one for about $500(but got a legit cab for $50 which helped alot) and I have around 500 games, all tested and play well.  Yeah I'm not sure I could have done on for $800 and only two dozen games....and you clearly have morre talent...nice Fix it Felix build!  I just added this to my mame cabinet a couple weeks back for my daughter to play.  But a stand alone cab...Sweet goodness!

Making progress and built the cabinet and tested out retropie and things are moving along nicely but I am finding it tough to find some USB speakers for the cabinet as the speaker area is on 2 1/4" height and about 7" long.  Even the smallest, decent speakers are 3in in height at the smallest.  Curious if any have suggestions for some USB speakers I can use in the small area?

thanks

Amazon Basics speakers are 2" I think?  The case screws apart too so they are really easy to pull out and rewire.  I just cracked open a pair yesterday and can measure them when I get home.  They are definitely smaller than 3" when facing down.

I did something similar in my last project HERE.  The ones I cracked open last night are even smaller - Amazon must have updated their design.  They also completely unscrewed from the case (unlike the pics I linked to).  So you unscrew the case, pop off the front panel and then you can actually unscrew the speaker and use it however you want.

Oh cool!  I did not think of taking the plastics off...even though I did that in my last two builds...LOL.  I guess I thought it would be easy to find super small speakers.  :)  I'll check out the basics but if you want to measure that would be helpful.

I need them to be thinner than 2 1/4" face down.  :)

These?  - https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Computer-Speakers-Desktop-USB-Powered/dp/B07D7TV5J3/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=amazon+basics+speakers&qid=1581368699&sr=8-3

Ordered amazon basic speakers to see if those will work out.
Ordered t-moding - white
Ordered some mounting feeet
Ordered some LED buttons(6 white, 2 red and 1 green) but need to find a LED controller.  I am not going to go with LEDPAC(or whatever it is called) this time around as I do not plan on doing anything too fancy, just light up.  I had just regular happ buttons but I am not feeling the yellow and blue buttons I have.  Been looking for a certain style button and stumbled across the ones I chose to go with when I was getting t-moding and feet.

I had a constant hum/buzz in the speakers so I have returned those and bought something else.  They did not sound "horrible" when the games were playing but the buzz was always in the back of my mind.  What did I expect for $13  :) - LOL

We will see if that pan out.

Oh man... my hearing is crap probably because of decades of headphone use so I probably don't hear anything.  Or maybe you got a bad set?

I put the t-modling on the the cabinet.  I was surprised the TModiing cut went along the bottom of the sides.  I was planning on feet so it will not slide around but I worry the tmold cut will be too big for the screw that goes into the foot.  I have not done a bartop before but if I do tmodling along the bottom does that keep the cabinet from sliding on smooth surfaces?

remember, there are no stupid questions  ;)

plus it gives you just enough room to get your fingers underneath to pickup the bartop when you want to move it :)

This is coming along nicely.  I have the buttons and controls in, I have the t-molding installed, monitor and sound bar installed.  Seems to control well.  working on LED buttons.  I bought 12v versions on accident and trying to get PS for them, ordered and on its way.  I will post a picture soon

But I am looking for some ideas on the control panel graphics.  Normally I do just a paper printout of some sort with graphics and 1/8" plastic sheet to protect it.  Well my LED buttons are barely 3/4" long to get through the 3/4" CP and so I do not have the room for the plastic.  So I am hoping to find a good quality, thin plastic printable graphic CP design(that I design but someone else prints) to use.  I do not really want a sticker but will use if that is the only other option.

any suggestions?
Thanks,rich

Working on graphics and marquee.  Decided on name "Spincade Classic"  :)

CP pretty basic so I dont have to measure out holes...but that might change

Cab progress.  Everything is wired up except the power, which i will get done this weekend.  Need to get some bigger feet because LED lights on bottom of cab did not emit light.  LOL

Need to figure out a theme for RasPi as well...using this comic one since it is 4x3 as a start.

Thanks...yeah I usually throw some ideas out and then walk away for awhile and then come back and tweak  :)
