Quarter Scale Minis
« on: November 22, 2019, 02:43:19 am »
I recently purchased a Numskull 1/4 scale Pac-Man cabinet.  I was pretty happy with it but after a little bit of reflection I thought that I just might be able to do better.

I have finally gotten most of the artwork that I need to start my new projects.  As I live in Japan I have limited space so rather than building a MAME machine (I have a HTPC that will do that In my living rooms) or buying a full sized machine I've decided to make mini Quarter Scale arcade machines.  A list of of all the machines I will be building will follow this post.  My wife game me the go ahead.  Each machine will be have a Raspberry Pi 3 or maybe a newer one with a 5 inch monitor.  They will also have USB inputs and HDMI outputs so that it can be viewed on a larger TV.

I have been looking around at some liquid resin 3D printers and have finally decided to break my piggy bank and buy an Anycubic Photon 3D resin printer.  I will be printing quarter scale joysticks (The metal hardware will be lathed for the joystick shafts and the joystick plates will be pot metal that can be bent to the original shape) and buttons with this unit as well as as close to possible replica coin doors, speaker grills, recessed cabinet handles and wheels for those cabinets that had wheels.  I was able to source tiny micro switches that will be used for the joysticks and some of the buttons.  I will also be trying to make quarter scale leaf switches for those cabinets that had them.  I will be trying to make these cabinets as realistic as possible.  If anybody has 3D models for Williams, Bally Midway, Atari, Namco or Coin door models for any of the cabinets below hit me with a PM.

Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Space Invaders and Space Invaders Deluxe will use a 45 degree angled semi transparent mirror, backgrounds to replicate the original look.  I'm pretty excited about building these.  Below is a list of games I will be building..

I have been working on artwork for the backsplash for Xevious, the Kick Plate for Space Invaders Deluxe.  It's not perfect but hopefully it'll look pretty convincing when printed for these tiny cabinets.  Each cabinet will have a place on my game room wall next to a framed Flyer and game info placks.  It'll take some time to finish all my cabinets but stay tuned, I'm pretty committed.  There is a link for the art I've been working on below.

This seems insanely ambitious.  I hope you make it happen - post tons of pics along the way and good luck.

Will do,  Javeryh!  Here's a pic of a regular size micro switch vs. the tiny microswitches I'll be using for this project.  I ordered about 150 of them.  Sooooo cute!

Ordered my Anycubic Photon-S from Amazon yesterday!  It’ll be here tomorrow!  From everything I have read and researched this printer will be the best for these projects.  I will start printing buttons soon after! Counted the different colors of buttons for each machine and came up with this...

White       50         (2 Pepper for Burgertime)
Atari Volcano   17                    (It'll be interesting to make these in Sketchup)
Orange      7                      (These guys are mostly for Nintendo Machines)
Red              14         (2 Translucent for Q*bert)
Green      2
Black       4
Blue             12         (Most of these guys are for the Nintendo machines as well but I'll need to 2 Translucent for Robotron)
Yellow      4

The learning curve for my new printer is going to be pretty steep but I'll manage.  I'll post pictures after my initial print test with the mini microswitches.  I have decided that I will try to use the internal spring from an empty ball point pen for the spring in the push button.

Cheers!

Got my 3D printer!  It looks amazing!  Unfortunately there was no liquid resin in the box!  DOH!  Was hoping to start printing tiny little buttons right away.  Ordered some white resin which came today.  I will be printing the first tiny push buttons tomorrow evening.  Stay tuned!

I started printing the coin doors.  There is a severe learning curve for this printer.  Stay tuned 8)

DAMN!  The USB port on my Anycubic Photon is dead.  Was getting memory errors and now it doesn't recognize any USB drives...  Back to Amazon, I guess.  Stay tuned.  I really like this printer....

Printed 16 button tops and nuts today for a test at the highest quality.. They are curing now.  The detail on these is awesome!  I am having a blast!!  I won't have time to print the button bodies 'till this weekend, Sorry guys.  Also got a bit further on the Lunar Lander side art vector.  Enjoy and stay tuned!

OK!  I printed the midway coin door and speaker grill for The Midway Space Invaders!  They turned out great but I've gotta sand and file, base coat and paint.   I am very happy with my new 3D printer.  Here are the pics.  Hope you enjoy. I will be printing buttons sometime today.

Hows the photon S? I have the original and I love it.
I would recommend downloading Chitubox. Its a great Slicer for resin printers.

I am curious to see how the buttons do, resin prints are very brittle depending on the type of resin.

Heh heh, for my first attempts I am using models that I have downloaded.  I will track down the authors of these and post them here so I can give them well deserved props.  After getting over the learning curve for this printer I will be designing my own.  ;D

Will you be selling any of these machines, after you finish them?
