Competition #50 (279): Empire City: 1931

ALL NEW BYOAC High Score Competition! (Games played. )

High Score Competition #50 (279)
https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7707

ROM Name: empcity (Bootleg?-Unless we should do rom "empcityu"?)

Settings:
On the bottom

Game Play

8-way + 2 Buttons

Last day: December 01, 2019 @ 11:59 PDT

KLOV: Track down and destroy enemies one at a time. Enemies usually appear offscreen. When enemies shoot at you, a brief "countdown" will be displayed on the screen, along with a warning sound. You can deflect bullets by pressing the "defend" button, but this uses up some of your ammunition. Shoot boxes to discover bullets and bonus items. Rescue hostages for bonus points. If you reach the final stage, you'll get a chance to take out the crime boss with a single shot.

WIKIPEDIA: The game is set in 1931 New York City where the player controls a young man who must avenge his family members, who were killed in a gang shootout. Over a period of several months, he targets mobsters, culminating with the mafia boss.

Players move a crosshair around the screen to aim and shoot at mobsters one at a time. They lurk around various areas, including on the street and in windows. An arrow appears that helps direct players to the location of the next mobster onscreen. Players have a set amount of time to find and shoot each enemy; if time is running out, a speech bubble appears counting down the last few seconds on the timer. When the timer reaches zero, the player is shot and the screen pans to the location of the enemy. A defend button is available as a last resort to avoid being shot.[6] Players can replenish their ammo by shooting hidden ammunition boxes and get bonus points by shooting at gold bars.

Levels are cleared after a set number of mobsters are eliminated. In the game's final level, the player has only one opportunity to assassinate the mob boss as he walks in front of windows in a building. After the final level is completed, the game loops back to the beginning.

YOU GUYS BETTER DON'T TELL ME YOU DON'T KNOW THIS GAME!!!
(Regardless, this is last popular? game I'm selecting. Next time I have that privilege, I came to conclusion I'm picking another unknown weirdo to give chance to EVERYONE that wants to participate, not just people that know the game so well it's just a showcase of their skills!)

GOOD LUCK!

It’s NOT a light gun game. You play it with joystick.

I didn't say that it is a lightgun game. A lightgun game would have been fine (if I still had a crt (and a lightgun that works with MAME)). I hate crosshair shooters. It's like playing Breakout/Arkanoid with a joystick, it just sucks.

Gotcha. I thought you mistook it for a light gun game. When the game originally came out in 1986 I thought it was quite interesting. I understand it’s not for everyone.
I’ll suppose I’ll see you in the next compo (assuming everyone doesn’t feel the same way as you about the pick)
Just curious if people know this game from arcades? It has US rom, so I figured it should’ve been known.

I played a lot of Dead Angle and Dynamite Duke in the arcades as a kid.  I always thought those were SEGA releases but apparently not.

I played this for the first time at Grinkfest.

I didn't much care for it.

Maybe it's time to give it another go.

Like. This was one I was considering selecting. Thanks for picking an interesting one. Great style on the art & animation. Decent variety. Steep learning curve at first, then more enjoyable.

"wow" the response to this game was "overwhelming"!
Whole 3 people played maybe total of 3 games (self admitted 1 game by me and 1 game by pbj. Curious how many games jason played before posting his score) This MUST be a record!

Since no one decided to "dethrone" me off the 3rd place, suffering continues!! Let's see if I can bring this competition to a new low (is that even possible at this point?) with my next pick!

Final tally for this compo:
jasonbar - 12,200
pbj - 7900
mimic - 6860

I WILL see you in the next one! (......................maybe?)

Busy time of year, man.  I kept firing up the cabinet and never getting a chance to play it.

I played about 3X in 1 sitting.

I do like the game.

I echo pbj, but my excuse is busy time of life, not just year. :)

Looking forward to the next pick, be it weird or normal.

Thanks,
Jason

Cool story, bro.

 :laugh2:

Next one's up.

I understand wrong time of the season to be playing much, I couldn't find much spare time myself. We'll see how this one goes. Now everyone move to the next thread!
