This game plays very strange on my MAME rig.  I had a hard time getting the game to start.  Mine defaulted to 5 lives BTW.

19,750 to get us going

Gave the game a second chance. Not as bad as I remembered it. Getting the hang of the controls makes for a better gaming experience  :)

52,850.

edit: After pressing F2 a few million times, I get this settings screen.

5 lives, new life every 20,000 points, difficulty 5.

Top post doesn't have official settings.
Are we using the settings in Yam's post?

5 lives seems so wrong...

Thanks

Yep, 5 lives is very wrong. I need more.

The settings for Twin Galaxies and MARP are 5 lives, difficulty 5, no extra lives.

Odd as it may seem, the default settings seem to be 5 lives, difficulty 5, extra life every 20,000.

62,150. I'm done. Last ragequit for this one.

Ha, the game seem more fun than I remember. Wish I had time to practice.
After only 3 games:
EDIT: New one, a little better
EDIT2: Damn, this game "sits" with me, more than I knew!

Hrmmmm...

Don't think I can stomach 5 lives.
Feels like cheating.

Plus, the endless F2ing required to get into the settings is making me tired just thinking about it.

Have fun, 5ers!

I love Joust.

5 men is the standard setting, and extras every 20k.

My record is 17 million on the xbox one, and i got 10 million on the arcade 1up version.
(The score flips, and it records it as 9,999,999).

The reason 5 men is the setting, is because you would be there all day long if  you got good.
(And didn't use the pteryodactyl trick).

I'll try it with the standard settings, and then just with 5 to see how it goes.

ok, after a couple of warm up games.
====================
Joust (Wolfmame .189) - 505 500

Settings 5 man , difficulty 5, extras every 20k

5 men score - 65200

Full game - 505,500
Wave - 42

video:

=====================

Notes : The games gets much easier after level 16, especially when there's tons of shadowlords

Basic strategy, stay at the bottom and let them come to you.

Yes, there is massive slowdown on the beginning of levels. The arcade version behaves that way also,
but as you kill enemies, the levels speed up.

There are many tutorials on youtube, the levels repeat in waves of 10 after awhile, and after 100, goes back to 0.
Also, there is no 256 turnover, unless you get 256 extra men. Difficulty ramps up every 2 million points, with
slightly faster behavior at 4,6,8, and 10 million, and then resets.

Isn't 5 men & every after 20K counter intuitive to what you're saying?

and what Pterodactyl trick (do tell!)

After many many games, I switched strategy to more aggressive one.

I guess, i should have clarified just 5 men with no extras.

On early rom version, you just let one of silver enemies get capture by
the lava troll, wait in the middle, and just kill pteryodactyls the rest of the time.
They fixed this on later versions.

There must be 2 versions of this ROM. I have watched these playthroughs before and the ROM I have always used akts differently in 2 ways. On Stage 6, when the middle platform disappears, the right tip of it is still visable until something flies through it. I don't see this on the playthrough. 2nd difference is much more critical, as the Pterodactyl trick does not work on my ROM. 80% of the time, when the Pterodactyl comes at me with the mouth open, he's usually a little lower than what I see on the playthrough, and takes me out. The other 20%, I get nailed from above when getting ready to kill him.

There are at least 4 rom revisions:
Yellow 3006-1 through 3006-12 (A ROMS)
White 3006-13 through 3006-24 (B ROMS)
Red 3006-28 through 3006-37 (A ROMS)
Green 3006-52 through 3006-63 (B ROMS)

but Mame only has 3 [white/green, solid red, white/red]

Joust - Red, Yellow and Green versions
Red and Yellow have the 'pterodactyl cheat'
Red has default high score of 107212, Yellow and Green are 109102.

there may be other variations in the gameplay.

Is there a sure way to deal with Pterodactyls? It seem like you have to be dead center from the front or back, but being at that exact spot at any moment that is nowhere near easy.

5 lives, extra life at 20k.  Sorry for not clarifying earlier. It's been... Hectic.

Yes, but it's tricky.
1) on fixed pterodactyl levels, be in the middle of the middle platfrom and turn left or right (but not too far over on the ledge)
on waves with no middle platform, stay on the bottom left above the hundred thousands digit

2) in midair is a lot harder, but basically, you have to lead it to the bottom, and then catch it coming up in the middle.

3) there is a point pressing technique, where you leave one egg on the middle left or right platform, and when the pterodactyl
comes out, you collect the egg, and kill the pterodactyl right as it leaves the screen.

This has been a fun one to revisit.  There are a lot of arcade games I hated as a kid because it was instant death to my quarters.  Not that I’m any good at this now but at least I’m hitting level 5 or so.  I need to remind myself that mame is protecting my wallet.

one last late score (may not count):
========================
emulator : Wolfmame 0.189
5 men + 20k extra

Score : 1 621 800
Wave : 99

Thought i was dead at 1 million, and had a lot of close calls.

Agreed.  This one was a lot of fun and it was a game I don't recall fondly from my arcade days.  I can see playing it more going forward.

On a side note I can see that the issues I'm having with a few games (Track and Field I'm looking at you) are likely related to emulation and not my buttons.  Joust performed perfectly.
