Lunar Lander Stage Selection in Mame emulation
« on: October 13, 2019, 06:38:58 pm »
So I am probably one of the few people who enjoy playing Atari's Lunar Lander.  I would actually enjoy building a dedicated machine but I want to incorporate the stage/level selection menu and I was hoping that maybe there was a plugin or something for Mame that would show the current stage that is selected on the screen, like an active bezel screen or something.  I've seen a few games that have extra icons on screen for things like "Pole Position" has the hi/lo shifter icon.  Anyone know if this is possible or out there somewhere.  I couldn't find anything in Mame 201.

Just get the artwork for the game.  The mission on the bezel lights up when you select it. I just tested it.

Like DM said, D/L the .LAY file + artwork here.

Go into the Video Options menu and select "Upright Artwork" or "Atari Classics Artwork" and you'll see the Mission Control Panel and lights.

Thanks...  I don't normally run the bezels on screen so I really didn't even think about Mr. Do's    I had see gameplay videos with folks having the bezel selection option thing so I figured there had to be a way.

So I am probably one of the few people who enjoy playing Atari's Lunar Lander.

Depends whether you like simulators, particularly those before the 90s, let alone in the early days.....  To me the game examples paucity and difficulty in life. I do not care for it.

If you prefer real lights I'm sure Mamehooker would solve this.  I actually have plans for a dedicated build as well, since this game has been one of the favorites since back in the days  :)

Good point.   ;D

MameHooker and a physical Mission Control Panel makes sense for a dedicated build.

The only downside is either finding or making high-enough resolution artwork for the MCP.

Mr Do's artwork looks fine on a monitor and is a great guide for layout, but is too low-rez to look good printed and back-lit.

- Reply 75 in this epic KLOV thread by dezbaz confirms that the font is Arial.

- Reply 78 has a B/W lander image that looks like a good start for making your own MCP art.
