LeapinLew: Arcade1up to Gorf - 100% Complete!
« on: September 22, 2019, 06:33:43 pm »
I'll be doing a pretty big makeover to a Arcade1up cabinet soon. I'm gathering a few parts and motivation. Some of you know about my adventure buying and reselling a pallet of customer return Arcade1up's. If not, you can check it out here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,159663.0.html

I was left with 2 cabinets once all was said and done (both with working monitors). One was converted to a 60-n-1 for my kids, and the other is being used for this. It'll be a dedicated Gorf, so I can use a mini trigger stick. The power plant for this will probably be a Raspberry Pi.

Gorf is an ideal candidate for this conversion because I can build a custom riser, replacing the entire 1/3 of the cabinet and it will end up having a pretty natural look. You can see in the Gorf picture how the cabinet is in 2 pieces and the bottom is gray. I don't personally like the riser look, so this is a good compromise.

Compared to my previous builds, this will be a pretty slow build.

I’m looking for the lower marquee and side art if anyone knows where I can get it.

Cabaret or full-size style?

As far as the ranking lights - I'm on the fence. I'll do it if I can find some clear cut instructions. I'm not sure how to do it. It won't bother me if I don't do it, but if it's an easy mod, I'll give it a whirl.

The size is going to be closer to a cabaret, but the coloring will look like a full size machine. Pics to come.

In the picture is my donor cabinet. I also included an overall game room shot so you can see what kind of space I'm dealing with. I like that these have a smaller form factor because I'm trying to keep an aisle on that side of the room. The Defender is going to need some sort of makeover too. I'm thinking about ordering art and extending the sides on it to make it a cabaret style machine.

The todo list looks something like this

  • Cut original cabinet sides to size
  • Cut t-molding slot
  • Build box
  • Create\Order artwork (I still need this)
  • decide on powerplant - leaning towards Pi

How about just going with woodgrain?  Reminiscent of the Gorf cabaret cabinet.

That's a fantastic suggestion, but I'm just not a wood grain kinda guy. I'm going to sleep on it, but I think I may abandon trying to use the original art and create something custom. It is so inconsistent with the rest of the cabinet, there has to be a backstory to it.

The vector library has this thing.

http://vectorlib.free.fr/Gorf/

This almost feels like one time where a collage would work.  You could mix elements of the different levels.

Thanks guys! Those help - especially the pic Yots.

I took a stab at creating the lower marquee in a 17x6 profile. I may spend a few more minutes cleaning it up.

I'm going to work up some custom sideart.

It won't have the total profile. It'll have the same color scheme. We'll see if it looks worth a crap once it's done.

So I've been sitting on the side art debating what I should do. Part of me wants to keep the original, but another part of me wants to keep the blue sides, and create some custom side art. I couldn't get it out of my head that this side art just isn't to the same caliber as the rest of the cabinet art. I decided to investigate!

The first step was to check out the Gorf Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorf. Turns out the developer was David Nutting and Jay Fenton. I clicked both links. I started with Dave Nutting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Nutting, No contact info really, so I hit up the googles and the only lead I got was a company called GDRI, http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page. I checked out the contact link and sent an email. That was days ago - no response. Turns out he's wrote a couple books and invented quite a few other things. pretty cool.

The other name on the wiki, Jay Fenton, lead to a fairly interesting short article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Fenton. Apparently Jay, changed his name and gender in the 90's and is very active in the transgender community. NTTAWWT. The good news, is there was a link to her page: http://www.fentonia.com and contact info here: http://www.fentonia.com/bio/

I sent this email:
Quote
Hi Jamie!

My name is Lewis and I'm a fan of Gorf. I'm building a Gorf themed cabinet. I'm trying to stick with the original colors and overall feel, and I had a question about the sideart. The artwork on the front of the cabinet is incredible. The sideart is also good, but it definitely has a different look and feel from the rest of the cabinet. Is there a reason for that? I was just envisioning the original design discussions around the artwork and was wondering how all the artwork came to be.

Anyhow, I hope you don't mind the random question. I found your name as the designers on wikipedia, which lead me to your page: http://www.fentonia.com

She replied today
Quote
Artwork was finalized over at Midway. Dave Nutting gave them some sketches to start from. I don't know the history of the decisions made. I agree that there was a difference between the side art and the front art.

– Jamie

Very cool to get a response back. So there you have it. Corporate crap. I'm guessing at this stage of video games, they were big business. I'm assuming a different team was given the side art job with a description along the lines of "PEW PEW PEW!". Of course, I'm totally speculating, but I don't think I can use this generic "NEW GAME" artwork on Gorf. I'll keep the blue colors, but try to come up with something with a little more umph.

That's not unlike many game development titles today. Outsourcing art is a big industry in game and film production.  The only difference is, back then you didn't have a dedicated Art Director to communicate the art style vision, and direct people to "colour within the lines".

BITD, art, especially promotional style art in the USA was all contracted out to random artists who had little to no understanding of the product they were making art for.   Just look at NES cover art...it's a complete mess for the North American market. Japanese game art BITD was so much better and relative to the games they were made for.

Until this thread, I never paid attention to the Gorf sideart.  Wonder if the haphazard nature of it is related to theme dropping the Star Trek theme?

Cool story.  But I think you found the best answer:  Keep the blue side color, and just write "PEW PEW PEW!" on the sides.

I'd use that for my side art before I would used the original. Perhaps I'd change out the beer to something a little more hipstery and put some man buns on those robots, but that art is primo!

Eesh... took quite a few side projects on before getting back to this. The storage side of my basement was absolutely full. I spent 3 weeks unloading it and giving stuff away. I hadn't really used Facebook marketplace before so I used it to give away a lot of stuff. I thought not being anonymous would help with the tire-kickers but I'll be damned if you still don't have a ton of folks asking "Is it still available?" and after you reply, they go radio silent. I also had a couple no-shows, which surprised me.

I recently got back into competitive foosball. I don't necessarily look for side hustles, but when one comes up I have a hard time not going for it. I found a Tornado foosball table for $100. I stripped it down, sold off some of the parts to make my money back, put some upgrades on my table, and created a wall mounted plaque that I'm going to get some pro plays signature on.

Stripped down and one of the few things I couldn't give away for free on Facebook or Craigslist.

This is the plaque made from a playfield.

This is a bunch of bouncy balls secured to a stick. I call it the eye-stick. You use it to practice shooting and it returns the ball quickly. It functions to return the ball but it also allows you to practice trapping and holding the ball.

Point is, I've been easily distracted and this build hasn't been my favorite. I'm definitely not retro gaming like I used to, but I hate having unfinished projects, so I'm going to soldier on.

I had a couple design ideas bouncing around in my head. My most ambitious was to lean the monitor back and replicate the blue area inside the monitor bezel area. Since I'm running low on motivation, I've skipped it. I also envisioned a totally redone side art, but I'm skipping that too. These are areas I can revisit, but I just don't have the interest to it right, so I'm going to settle.

The cool thing about Gorf is it's a 2 piece cabinet. I rebuilt the riser to fit inside an existing arcade 1 up. It gives it a more intentional look, and not look like it's wearing a boot.

I painted the riser and mounted it. It's a 1 way trip. I secured the top to the bottom with screws and patched the holes. I also did some touch-up work to fill in some cracks and blemishes.

I mounted the new marquee, but I still need to secure the lights. Lots still to do.

Clever idea with the riser.  That is a big improvement and makes it seem like a mini Gorf.

I'm already backtracking on my previous backtracking. I was originally going to not install a coin door, tilt the monitor back, or do the blue CP areas. Scratch that - I'm doing all those things now.

This is where I'm at today:

I cut the lower bezel, mounted all the LED's, painted the side blue, and a few other tidbits not really worth mentioning. Artwork is ordered and I'm messing with the computer options for this to play Gorf. I'm trying to determine what the game list should be. I have Gorf, Zaxxon, Zaxxon 2, and Satans Hollow. I may just have it boot directly into Gorf and only have Gorf because I don't really like Zaxxon or Satans Hollow, but I'm still contemplating. I'm going to try a Raspberry Pi first, and if that causes too much issue, I'm going to use a computer.

More info to come. It should move along pretty quickly from here.
