Converting Cyberball 2072 cabinet to Cyberball 2072 MAME
« on: September 17, 2019, 03:06:11 am »
I have a Cyberball 2072 cabinet that’s in rough shape. Sound doesn’t work and one monitor is pretty bad. So I plan on gutting it and putting in new monitors and a PC and just running Cyberball 2072 on mame. I tested the rom and it outputs to two monitors fine and the controls will work properly.

But I need some advice:

1) what 4:3 monitor would you recommend? I don’t mind just using a lcd computer monitor. I know that’s not optimal look but it’s fine.

2) how should I go about mounting the monitors?

3) I’ve never done controls. What’s the best tutorial on setting up the joysticks and buttons to connect to te PC and work properly?

4) link me which joysticks and buttons I should purchase.

I don’t expect the project to be too difficult. I just don’t know how to do some f the hardware stuff.

Thanks!

Fix the sound and the monitor. Or send the monitor chassis and PCB out to get repaired. Why gut a classic machine just to MAME it with the same game?

Because there’s no one locally that does that work. And I have no idea where to start to repair a 30 year old arcade game.

The beginning is a good place to start. Have you tried adjusting the monitor pots to get a better picture?

There are plenty of people here and on KLOV.com that can help get you started. At KLOV.com there are also people who you can ship just the monitor chassis to and they will repair it. Same thing with the PCB. The no sound issue could be in the wiring, the speakers, or the PCB.

Go to KLOV.com and ask if there is someone in your area that does repairs.

You have been posting since 2017 and you don't know how to setup joysticks. You won't be successful trying to gut that machine and set it up for MAME.

Mike has anyone ever told you that you are about as friendly as a brain eating amoeba?

Actually only people on the internet seem to have a problem with my honest feedback. I wasn't even being critical. You have been posting here a long time. In years you haven't tried to learn the most basic stuff and now you are trying to tackle a big project instead of just getting what you have fixed. I am trying to save you time and aggravation.

I gave you another place to seek help. I was even going to enquire whether there were any KLOVers near you who could help you out.

Yeah. I am good. My tolerance for this ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- is just a little low today.

I’ll echo PBJ’s statement.

We may spar on the forum, and pretty sure we legit don’t care for each other, but dude, take care of yourself.

FFS Lew, what is the point of your post, other than passive-aggressively trying to goad Mike into reacting to you?

Piling onto pbj’s remark makes you look like a biter. Either come up with your own quips or go play Time Pilot with a spinner, ya pleb.

As I was reading this thread I was thinking that it was getting pretty rowdy pretty quick. I don't agree with Mikes tone and message, but after reading everything, my thoughts changed to concern.  Which is what I perceived PBJ's post to be. I wasn't sure if Mike was posting from the position of a spirited arcade collector or if he about to have some mental breakdown.

I just wanted the dude to not lose it. Maybe he's not even close, and I don't want my post to any kind of trigger. If you think my post can be read as a jab in any way, I'll pull it.

Yeah. This site doesn't cause me any stress at all. It's the internet. You don't have to worry about me. I just thought the dude was better off fixing what he had. Nobody was rushing to help him MAME the cab.

I even went to KLOV to see if I could find someone near him willing to help, but by that time he was already insulting me.

Ok good! Now that we know no one is suicidal.

Phouglas - assuming you haven't been run off yet, you'll want to do a quick consideration to determine if modding this cabinet may cause you some future grief. Ultimately, it's your cabinet and you can do what you want, but we have seen a few conversions where the person made some irreversible decisions only to regret them later. I would check on the popularity and availability of the game to base your decision. Assuming you are confident with your decision to mod - go for it!

I would answer your original questions like this:
  • What 4:3 monitor would I recommend? This is actually a big decision. If you want to stick with 19" CRT's, which I would, I would find some arcade monitors that can connect to the PC, or try to squeeze in some 21" computer monitors (CRT of course). They should be easy to get, and shouldn't cost much.
  • Mounting the monitors depends on what solution you go with. If you use the arcade monitor, they may just slide in, but if you use anything else, you'll need to fabricate something.
  • As for your joystick question, I'll have to politely tell you to RTFM. Too many opinions and options here for anyone to definitely give you an answer. If it were me though, I'd use Happ Supers.

Here's a quality conversion of the same type cabinet. You'll also notice a lot less drama about this conversion. Happy Reading: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=108719.0

Please post your updates here. We really would like to see the progress. It's the internet, so put on your flame suit and ignore the haters.
