Restore or RePurpose? Help from the community
(1/1)
acidrs:
Hello,
So i recently found a broken arcade cabinet on a surplus auction site and had plans to fix it up and either put it back in operation somewhere or sell it.

However things have taken a little turn when we started to sand down the back paint, which revealed the original graphics of this cabinet.

It feels wrong to repaint over this and wanted to find out from the community, should we restore this machine back to its original state or not?
Ken Layton:
Yes, make it back to original.

I think everyone on here will always tell you to restore it. One thing I'd point out based on my own poor choices is that it's very expensive and difficult restore a cabinet once you start make major altercations to anything on the exterior like the Joystick panel. If you do any altercations I'd leave it at multitapping in a Pi so you can play other games of that era and leaving the original system intact. Based on the gorgeous side art alone I don't think I could bring myself to change it. Does the board and monitor/chassis work or is this thing a coaster in its current state?

I've never actually played a real one of those.

Are the board(s), monitor, power supply, etc. still there?

You have to wonder what has been done to it given that it only has a "Super Speed" button on one side presently.

Save it if you can!

You've got quite the mutt there.   It looks like a Super Pac-Man converted to Ms Pac-Man converted to a Multi-game.

Super Pac-man cabinet
Ms. Pac-man Marquee
Galaxian Bezel
Ms. Pac-Man control panel with wrong joystick and a hole punched in it (probably for a multigame)

Honestly this would be costly to convert back.  Wiring harness, game PCB, Marquee, Bezel, Fully populated Control Panel, side art, etc.  It would be less expensive to find a working Super Pac-Man.

As much as I'm into preservation and de-conversion I'd pass on this one.  If It's already a multi-game, I'd roll it with black paint and keep it or sell it as-is.
