| hulkster:
i got a new ASUS motherboard with new processor and all that. i have an pre-existing hard drive that is installed as well. everythign is running fine and windows 98se is recognizing everything fine. it starts to want to install the new drivers for the motherboard, etc. and then asks me for the windows 98se cd. so i put it in the cd rom drive, the LED comes on so im suspecting that its fine. well i try to click OK and it says that the cd is not found. i click on "browse" to look for the specific folder for the cd rom drive, and when i do that, the CD ROM drive doesnt even show up in the list that i can choose from. the floppy and hard drive are both there, but no cd rom drive. power is connected and all that. what could be the problem? i have only one hard drive and one floppy. very simple pc, so what should the jumpers be set to on the cd rom drive just to make sure thats not that problem. everything is basically brand new. ive even switched out cd rom drives to make sure that it wasnt a bad drive. help! |

Is the drive on it's own channel? If not, move it to it's own channel. |

If you have two ide controllers on the motherboard. You should have your harddrive on one... and the CD rom on the other (both harddrive AND CDroms jumpers set to master)... This will require two cables also. This will be your fastest settings. If you cant.... and you have to have them both on the same cable / ide controller... Then you will want to have the harddrive set to master. And the CDrom set to slave. NOTE: Some drives don't like each other (harddrive and hardrive slave). But most harddrives will master most cdroms. This might be your problem. Other then that... if its new... it might be bad. Do you have an old one thats known good around? |

well i think its a jumper setting, cuz the cd rom drive worked before. ill try to set the jumpers. |

okay i messed with the jumpers a little and changed both the cd rom and hard drive to master. i gave each their own cable and plugged the hard drive into the primary controller and cd rom into the secondary. the cd rom is recognized now as the secondary master, but the hard drive is not recognized at all now. what happened?! |
