4 Player Simultaneous Games?

drewkaree - mame has the 4 speed shifter mapped to  buttons 2, 3, 4, 5 by default in the driver with button 1 as gas.

paigeoliver:

I don't know how Mame does it, but my Sprint 2 machine has 3 microswitches on each shifter. If none are held down then it is first gear, otherwise it is the gear of whichever one you are holding down. If Mame does it correctly then it won't really be playable with buttons, if it does it incorrectly then it should.

Epiphany: Are there NO 4-player simultaneous fighters made?!?!? Somebody please tell me that in the history of all the arcade games ever made that there is at least one 4-player simultaneous fighter!!!

Depends on your definition of "Fighter".

If you mean Streetfighter 2 type game, then no I am not aware of any? How would that genre even scale properly to 4 players, since your characters (generally) automatically face their opponent.

If you mean game where you hit people, then there are zillions, most of them are really similar to TMNT.

If you mean "side scroller", then there is always Quartet.

I consider WWF games to be fighters and they are commonly 4-player (though I'm familiar with console games and not any arcade wrestling games).  There are others that I'm pretty sure have never appeard in arcades (at least not in America) like Super Smash Bros. Melee.  These are 4-player games that cannot be classified as anything, if not fighters, and they're some of the most enjoyable games of their type.  There are necessarily differences in the formula from the likes of Street Fighter 2 and Tekken since there are four players rather than two, but they are a lot closer to those games than they are to beat 'em ups like Xmen and TMNT.

Once again, I can't answer definitively as to whether there are any 4-player ARCADE fighters, but there are plenty of 4-player fighters that would work great in a cab, so if nothing else throw a console or two in your cab and interface your control panel to them in addition to running MAME.
