4 Player Simultaneous Games?
« on: February 14, 2004, 01:37:26 pm »
1.  I'm looking to know what games can be played by 4
players at once (think NFL Blitz-type) so I can figure            out what I will need to put on that control panel.

2.  Does anyone know of any 4 player driving games?  I
thought Sprint was one, but don't have my roms with
this computer to be able to check for sure.

3.  Is it possible to use up to 4 steering wheels at the
same time?  I'm setting up a showcase podium, so
     room won't be an issue.

I don't know how many 4-player simultaneous games there game but i'd like to know as well just how many 4+ player games there are. I think as ppl contribute to this page it ought to be stickied and updated. Here are the ones i can think of odff the top to get this thing started:

All NBA Jam(4-player) games,

X-Men(6-player),

WWF Wrestlefest(4-player),

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(4-player),

Captain Ameica And The Avengers(4-player)(got all those out of another topic so if they are wrong don't blame the messenger).

All Gauntlet games(4-player).

All NFL Blitz games after the first one(4-player).

NBA Maximum Hangtime, NBA Showtime, and NBA Slam Dunk(4-player).

Ok thats all i got for now.
It's not what you know....its what you can prove!!!

*using his best Mr. Burns voice* EXCELLENT!

Exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for, and no worries, I wouldn't blame the messenger for passing along info.

After reading my original post, I realized I forgot/wasn't clear about the reason for this.  I want to make swappable control panels.  I want to make ONE 4 player control panel with all necessary controllers, and the rest of the CP's I'd make would be 1-2 player models.  This way, when not playing a 4 player game, I wouldn't have this MONSTROUS CP sticking out all the time.

The ONLY other 4 player CP I would build is one with 4 steering wheels.  In searching the list @ KLOV I see Sega has a few....is it possible to use 4 steering wheels simultaneously with mame?

The sort info utility sorts by player number.

http://www.zophar.net/utilities/arcadeaud.html

I made a custom list of 4 player games and 3 player games for mamewah.  However, they are stuck on my cab but I mean to post them soon.

Championship Sprint is a 3 player game.

There's lots of 4 player games out their.  I have a 4 player control panel and it's great when you play games like Gaunlet.

One thing... If your deciding to make a 4 player panel, just make sure there's room for everyone and your using a big screen so everyone can see the action.

sprint 8 is an 8 player racing game... i think only 'analog+' version of mame can controll all the cars though.

in the future... maybe they will find a way to 'link' games.  that way.. you could say...play as many 'datona usa's' as you had controls for.  (though... that might need many more pcs to run them)

Ok...how am i suppose to use this sortinfo program?

Download it, run it, and it will ask you where your Mame.exe is.  Then it will generate a spreadsheet of every single Mame game and every single detail about the games (type/controller type/#of controller/#of buttons/resolution/etc...).  You can get a HUGE amount of information from that program.

There is also Sprint 4 and Demolition Derby (4-player simultaneous drivers), but those are island style cocktail games and are not designed for use in an upright cabinet. Plus the B&W Sprint games require a 4-way shifter for EACH player. It would probably be cheaper just to buy a 2 or 3 player driving game than it would be to add that capability to your Mame cabinet.

Badlands and Sprint 2 are good choices for multi-player driving games to own. There are at least a dozen others though, some of which are often fairly cheap.

Also, Simpsons and Tekken, FWIW.

For 4-player driving controls, use MAME Analog+

drewkaree - mame has the 4 speed shifter mapped to  buttons 2, 3, 4, 5 by default in the driver with button 1 as gas.

I don't know how Mame does it, but my Sprint 2 machine has 3 microswitches on each shifter. If none are held down then it is first gear, otherwise it is the gear of whichever one you are holding down. If Mame does it correctly then it won't really be playable with buttons, if it does it incorrectly then it should.

Depends on your definition of "Fighter".

If you mean Streetfighter 2 type game, then no I am not aware of any? How would that genre even scale properly to 4 players, since your characters (generally) automatically face their opponent.

If you mean game where you hit people, then there are zillions, most of them are really similar to TMNT.

If you mean "side scroller", then there is always Quartet.

I consider WWF games to be fighters and they are commonly 4-player (though I'm familiar with console games and not any arcade wrestling games).  There are others that I'm pretty sure have never appeard in arcades (at least not in America) like Super Smash Bros. Melee.  These are 4-player games that cannot be classified as anything, if not fighters, and they're some of the most enjoyable games of their type.  There are necessarily differences in the formula from the likes of Street Fighter 2 and Tekken since there are four players rather than two, but they are a lot closer to those games than they are to beat 'em ups like Xmen and TMNT.

Once again, I can't answer definitively as to whether there are any 4-player ARCADE fighters, but there are plenty of 4-player fighters that would work great in a cab, so if nothing else throw a console or two in your cab and interface your control panel to them in addition to running MAME.

Well i just figured that in 2000 that someone would have made an arcade game that is like a cross between Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. Melee. It would be awesome. Or maybe something like a Tekken 3d environment were 4 ppl could just go free for all...balls to tha wall!!!!

They have some for consoles, but I haven't seen any coin-op Tekken style 4 player games.  I think either Sammy or Playmore is supposed to be coming out with a fighter where you can play 4 player 2D fighter like King of Fighters.  I think they were supposed to go back with their Fatal Fury two level stages too, but I can't remember which company.  Could just be a rumor.

I wanted to complete a list so I deleted some of my posts....here's what I'm planning to do.  I'm gonna build a Showcase cab that utilizes interchangeable control panels.  I will several 2 player CP's with different controls.  I want to make ONE 4 player CP that will ONLY be used for 4 player games (and 3 player game, I've found).  This will come out for friends & parties and such, and when it's over, back in the closet it goes.  I was looking for all 4 player SIMULTANEOUS games so I'd know what was most commonly used and max qty of buttons I'd need.  Using SortInfo and KLOV I've come up with the following list which should cover all games from v0.79.  I've also attached the SortInfo list and a custom list with joystick/button needs for each of those games.  Hope this helps you guys as well.  I've now answered my own question thanks to a day off of work.  Time well spent!  The attachment is with this post, the generic list will be posted next.  Thanks for all your help.  Individual thanks will follow as well.

Just rename the file to .zip

Maximum PC, see if they have a back issue
or I'll try to find it and scan it in so
you can see it).  The issue would become
one of space, more than pc's, IMO.

SNAAAKE:  Thank you for helping out.  I've
really enjoyed the graphics you've let
us have a peek at.  Your skill in combining
images into some semblance of usability is
impressive and many others appreciate it too.

paigeoliver: thanks for the driver contribs.
I'm contemplating a swappable CP with 4 wheels
for the podium.  I think the view won't be an
issue since the spacing between screen and CP
will be about 3 feet. If not, I've seen another
with a cocktail-type driver with two wheels I
considered building, so I guess I'm already
looking forward to project #2!

I didn't think to consider shifters.  To those
wanting to build a cab, see why planning and
gazillions of questions can help anal-retentive
types?!  If I can't figure out a workaround,
then you've given me the most valuable piece
of info I've needed!  The info on how your
shifter works (switch set-up) is also extremely
valuable.  Thanks!

Tiger-Heli: You sound more certain about
needing Analog+.  Have you done a 4 player
driver with that?  If you've any ideas I'd
like to hear them, in case it dislodges the
brain farts I'm afflicted with!

Fiend: What about WWF: Wrestlemania?  Well,
I'm looking for 4 player simultaneous games
to know what I need to set up a 4 player CP,
and unless the information is wrong @ KLOV,
it is listed as a 2 player game.  I plan to
have swappable CP's, so it will be included
in a 2 player CP.  Still, your contribution
is appreciated.

cdbrown: Thanks for the mapping info.  I've
got a lot to consider, so making/eliminating
a decision easily needs info like you gave.

DarkKobold: Powerstone? Sorry, that was my
fault in not stating that I was looking for
mame-only games. I take it that Powerstone
is for another emu flavor, yes?  After
getting my machine built, I might think about
other systems. (project #3, what have I
gotten into!?) Still, thanks for the contrib.

Let me rephase my question.

Is the a 4 player game out there that requires each person (player 1 to 4) to use their own 4 joystick?  And yes I understandt Karate Champ uses 4 joysticks.  2 for each player.

Thanks

From researching this, there aren't any 4 simultaneous player games that require more than a single joystick.  99% require a standard 8 way with the rest split up pretty evenly.

If I understand your question, you want to know what games require a single 4 way for each person playing, correct?

If I am correct in assuming this is what you are asking, the following games require 4 ways:

Face Off
Bomber Man World
Dynablaster
Mystic Warriors
Violent Storm
Barricade
Checkmate

Also, from what I was able to determine for these games, they use a maximum of two buttons.

Unless I've fallen behind the times, standard MAME only supports a single mouse.  So for more than two spinners, you will need Analog +.

Seph, that appears to be an "alternating player" type of 4 player.  Have you seen one that is an "all 4 at once" setup?  I can put the "alternaters" on a 2 player CP.

And here's the list.  There are no controls listed for the game.  Tough nuts!  ;D Download the file in the previous post to get that.

To recap, the following is a list of ONLY 4 player SIMULTANEOUS games.

Not to hijack the thread - but what are the requirements to run NBA Jam? I have  700 MHz P3 and most NEO GEOs run fine... but NBA Jam sounds and plays horrid. It stutters and skips, and is a huge mess.

My games: Tapper, Asteroids, Cocktail-MAME, Tron, ROTJ, Tempest, Star Wars (not working)
My wants: Warlords Cocktail

Not sure if NBA Jam is 100% working or not - you might check a MAMETESTERs . . .

Sorry Drew, that is largely incorrect data.

Face Off (This isn't 4-way, it is a hockey game for goodness sake. Just bad data on klov or something).

Bomber Man World (Correct, all the bomberman games are 4-way, but they all seem to play fine with 8-way sticks).

Dynablaster (Correct, all the bomberman games are 4-way, but they all seem to play fine with 8-way sticks).

Mystic Warriors (8-way game incorrectly listed as 4-way on klov).

Violent Storm (8-way game incorrectly listed as 4-way on klov).

Barricade (this game does not use joysticks at all, it only used buttons)

Checkmate (You would THINK this game used 4-ways, but it doesn't. It uses 8-ways. I used to own one of these, and last I heard it now belongs to another BYOAC member).

I appreciate you posting this list drewkaree.  However just wanted to point out that many on this list are only 3 player simultaneous.  I know that you are including those for your 4 player panel, but just thought I should clarify for others.

JamIt no problem at all.  You're correct that I added them cuz I figured it wouldn't make any sense to make a 3 player panel when I could just play them with the 4 player.  I just never bothered to post anything saying I had done so.

Lemme ask, since it seems like klov isn't always necessarily spot-on accurate...is there another site that would give the same info they do, kinda like a double check against each other?

paige, so you think a 4 way isn't even necessary on a 4 player CP, then?

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

If you can rig a dreamcast to play powerstone 1 or 2 on your cab it is god like... great game on a cab .

One of the arcades in Montreal  area (the 222) had  a showcase style using a projector on a 100inch screen. They also had Street fighter vs xmen on the same setup.  Awesome.

I need the gamecube adapter for my x-arcade cab for super smash brothers melee.

I'm curious to other 4 player mame game that are unemulated which are 4 player that are current WIP to get working in mame.

I've played Powerstone 1 in the arcade in the US.  I guess it was an import, though it didn't seem like it.  But IIRC, Power Stone 1 was not 4 player, only 2 player.  They didn't go 4 player until Power Stone 2, which IMHO is a much better game.

The first time I ever saw this game was in an arcade here in Dallas years ago.  It wasn't Japanese either.  There had to be an US release.

about the four player fighter there is one available in mame. It is Marvel vs Capcom with four player support. I remember playing it in mame and it wasnt simultaneous but it was damn cool. If you have played MVC you know the tag team format, well in this version it is 2v2 where each character is controlled by a different player. It was pretty cool and can be loads of fun if you have 4 friends to play it with. Anyone ever play this?

This is a good thread for 4-player cab people, but I have a question for the 2-player guys. I am trying to decide what to do with 4-player games on my 2-player cab. It seems like a waste to only be able to use players 1 and 2 and poor old players 3 and 4 are forever blinking, "Add Coin to Join!" What do you think? I am a bit of an authenticity freak so I have half a mind to simply not have the 4-player game roms in my cab at all. But that skips some really cool games. Thoughts?

Don't forget...  Smash TV and Total Carnage are 2 player games that would play nicely on your 4 joystick panel.

This is just off the top of my head.  There might be other 2 player, 2 joystick per person games.
