NEO GEO from Kazakhstan
« on: August 16, 2019, 01:46:22 am »
Hello.
I do not consider myself a gamer, rather, on the contrary, I play extremely rarely. Over the past five years he has played three toys at PS. But the old, tube, flat, arcade games are something else. Ever since the time of the ZX80, Commodore, Atari, I have felt warm feelings for them. Unfortunately, in my time, in my country, arcade systems (cabinets) did not have wide popularity, the old slot machines of the times of the USSR did not meet the needs of young people, and there wasn’t a new one. I always wanted to own a full-fledged slot machine. There are no such automatic machines in Kazakhstan; it is very expensive to bring from abroad. Therefore, I decided to assemble it myself. There is no information on the assembly of arcade cabinets in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet, I searched on foreign forums, this is how I got to this forum, thanks to him, I got a lot of information for my project. I wanted to share what happened.
PS:
I apologize for the clumsy translation, my native language is Russian, and I know English very poorly.  :)

First I chose the model of the arcade cabinet. Of all that I saw, I liked the NEO GEO MVS cabinet model
Based on it, I drew an cabinet for my dimensions (height - 180 cm, width - 600, depth - 915)
Like that

The material chose MDF 16 mm thick (easy to process, paint, etc.).
I drew in 3D, gave the files for cut, got blanks.

Milling cutter edge, under the T-shaped edging

Then he started assembling the case

Front door for coin acceptors

For easy movement - wheels

Assembly steps

… to be continued.

Looking good so far!

My only comment is I would reinforce the base where you have screwed the castors on with some thick wood.
MDF is not the strongest to hold all that weight on 4 screws :)

The heart of the machine will be a game board Pandora Box 3 with 520 games on board (for me half can be thrown away)

The screen will be a 25-inch kinescope from a Philips TV (I have been looking for a good kinescope for a long time)

In order to get rid of the "artifacts" in the image had to change several capacitors and resistances.

After which the image got better
Tested on Street Fighter

Tested on SMetal Slug

Then mounted the kinescope in the body

We turn to the sound.
At the output of Pandra, the box is mono sound, I still installed a stereo amplifier, suddenly in the future I will replace the board

I made a decorative frame from the plastic of the TV, acrylic and dichloroethane

It turned out well, you just need to grind and paint

The next step is painting the body

Primer first

Black color

Red color

Well, the installation of speakers with volume control

… to be continued.

I installed a couple of fans in the case

Printed protection for them

Получилось вот так

Sawed the game panel

Printed on venil and pasted

Set buttons and joysticks

My weakest place is the coin acceptor. There was silver in stock, installed them, of course not beautiful, probably in the future I will replace it with authentic black ones

Test run :)

That is really great.  Thank you for showing this to us.

You wanted a thing you could not get, so instead of never having one, you made one.  That is the idea of this place.  Bravo!

You did a good job, too.  Well done.

Thanks for your feedback :)

Left a little
Inserted PVC edge

As well as LED lighting under the sign

Well, actually the first person who tested the device at work is my daughter. She was delighted.

It was my daughter who drew the remote control, signboard and side stickers.

Here is the fully finished machine

I think thats one of the nicest MVS builds I have seen.
Does look odd having a SF2 marquee on a neo marquee though lol

Anyways, Congrats and enjoy!

Just keep a eye on that base, Wouldn’t want it to break and ruin a lovely machine :)

Ide defo strengthen it.

It seems to be a common point of failure on cabs in general so I think adding a few battens now saves many pained hours later lol

Cant blame you with SF2 its prob one of the most popular games ever!

I prob would of stuck a Garou MOTW or something else in though just for that little authentic look lol

So what is your next big project?
Its nice to see a quality first build so they next one should be even better!

It has not been decided yet, but the main points are as follows:
1. Stylize to one of my favorite films: Blade Runner https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/ or Kin-dza-dza! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091341/?ref_=ttmi_tt. By design, it depends on her daughter what it will be more interesting for her to draw. :)
2. Based on this, make a case, minimize if possible.
3. Use an LCD monitor
4. Use Pandora game board box 6 (I already ordered it)

... and I also want to make a car from an iron barrel of 208 liters for vertical games

Well never heard of the 2nd one but Blade Runner was a class film!
Good game to, The first to use 4 discs if I recall correctly.

I recently used a PB6 for the first time ever.
Seems to work ok but has a few odd quirks.

I highly recommend watching the second movie. And probably better in the original language with subtitles;)

The Blade Runner game was really on 4 disks, I still have it, and I really liked it (I went through it several times - the plot is not linear there)

Pandora 6 I will study, disassemble, try to pick the files.

I vote for Kin-dza-dza! That poster is wild and I don't know why it's giving me Zardoz meets Monthy Python vibes, but that sounds like an amazing idea for a cab if you have 2D skills for the side art.

Wow, I must have been asleep at the wheel, I don't know how I missed this one.  Very nice job, everything from design to execution was very well done.  I'd be very proud of that if it were mine.

One thought on the marquee is it looks like you can still see the LED light strips.  If you put some Cast Acrylic behind the MVS marquee (white, anywhere from 50-70% transparency) it would really help to diffuse the light and get rid of the three bands.  Not sure what options you have available where you live but I've bought here in the U.S. from these folks: Tap Plastics.  There is a link about half way down "Choosing white acrylic" that shows the differences in transparency and how well it diffuses the light.

Nice job.

I myself do not know how to draw, but my daughter does not draw badly. She studies on a animator. Here are the approximate exemplary works that she did.

I think she will cope with the task..

PS: She also painted an avatar for me :)

Jesus that kid is talented.  You hit my dream of working with my kid on an arcade cabinet.  My daughter is into art as well but she’s only 7.  If my daughter could draw like that then I’d be all over making a cab together.  Very, very cool.
