First arcade purchase
« on: July 18, 2019, 01:25:51 pm »
How's it going, there is a killer instinct 2 arcade cab local to me for sale. Overall it looks to be in great shape. Seller wants $1100 for it and I want to make sure I'm paying a fair price for it and making a good decision on purchasing it . Seller told me it needs degaussing ring adjusted, minor screen issue in top right corner as shown in pics. He told its hardly visible and has adjusted already it and it comes back. Other than that he stated controls, sound and cab are in great shape and original. What are your thoughts on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for the help for a first time arcade machine buyer. Please move if posted in wrong area.

It seems to be in decent condition, And I wouldn't be scared of it at that price...However... Odds of that degauss coil needing adjustment are about zero, and either the seller is fibbing you or has little experience with repair (Gotta ask yourself why didn't he fix it then if he is so knowledgeable?, And why didn't he try selling that at Zapcon since it was right there?), My guess the monitor is tired, and he knows it ,may last awhile or possibly not. But do not mention any of this to him if you want it, Just let him give his sales pitch and then If you want it a little cheaper, with the power off look at the screen and if you can see the game image (screen burn) Point at that and say dude WTF, How can I fix that? (you cant but normally its not really a big deal, less is better)... And offer him $850... Good luck man, first game is always very exciting! But get right on it fast, cause games don't usually just sit around, someone will most certainty snatch it up at that listed price.

Thanks for the tips, he did mention that there is no screen turn-in and that he's gotten rid of the discoloration and then it comes back. Did you see it at Zapcon or that he could have sold it there and didnt. Anything else I should look for. Maybe leave it on to see if the monitor acts up after being on for awhile.

Jenn is beginning to smell a rat, Do not sent this guy any money, At best bring cash in person and leave with it...To answer your question No, leaving it on for awhile isn't going to do anything, The way it is I would be suprized if it didn't puke within 6 months....However, It may not be hard to fix...I assume you live around Phoenix beings how you looking at that ad...Let's see if we can get Yots over here, Hold on.

Yeah, I’d offer $850.

How long has that been available? I’d make up my mind ASAP, I know a few guys who own/are opening barcades in the Valley, and if you don’t pull the trigger, they will. Just a friendly heads up.

If you do get it, we have a close knit group here in Phoenix that does arcade repair events monthly once the weather cools down. That monitor is probably in need of a cap kit, which we can help you with.

Think it was posted initially on craigslist about a month or two, then on offerup recently. I'm very interested and planning on going to look at it this morning. He's said the lowest he'd go is $1100. How much would it cost for a cap kit, I'd appreciate the help with that too. Thanks

Cap kits can be quite cheap, around 20 bucks or so, but bargain hunting isn't really where you want to save money on parts, quality high temp caps can add up fast but even so very nessesary....That's the kind of thing that seller should be talking about, 1100 with monitor issues is top end (IMO) and he knows it, but sometimes it is best to give the price and just get it on the truck, before someone else does.

Laying it on its back face up is the best way to move it, as it keeps the center of gravity low and reduces rollovers  (long story don't ask) Just make sure the key is out of it so it doesn't break off, and the cord doesn't get pinched or damaged...Good luck...Post pics...

I would recommend not laying it on it's back, if you can't help it.

The thing is, there might be loose debris or quarters inside the cabinet, that can get onto your monitor or game PCB causing a short when you power it up.  Unless you know the cabinet is completely clear of debris inside, best to keep it upright as possible.  If you have a pickup truck, or a can hitch a carry-on trailer, that's the best way to transport standing up.

Not all pickups are created equal, A good service truck is wide, lowered a bit has a headache rack for safety (and tiedowns) a gate lift and in my case a way to pay for that stupid new transmission....As opposed to a narrow wheelbase and a liftkit, and big tires (Dodge) that will flip over if you start adding weight up...Even so dirty girls like to be on their back once and awhile and all that trash collects in the back corner when you unload it and stand it up again.

Its home, everything works fine, only thing not working now is the marquee lights. They were working before I moved it and took it home. Discoloration is gone too. Woo hoo!

Sometimes the North South orientation of a machine can cause those discoloration issues. Glad to see it wasn’t anything major.

Thank you all for the guidance and advice. Quick question on the main board there two red lights and one is only. Are both supposed to be on or only one and should be on steady or blinking. Thanks again, look forward to learning about these machines and more.

If it's working Jenn wouldnt worry about those lights a manual will tell the details and most likely you can just download a digital copy online...As for that Marque that happens sometimes after being move, check the fuse, replace the starter (little silver can, cheap at hardware store) just make sure voltage rating are the same...and if it still doesn't work change the bulb.

Or possibly make sure the service switch is pulled out If you got the back door off.

So this is what happens when I power on the arcade, if I wiggle the bulb around it flickers and then lights up nice and bright. Will even stay on and work fine, but if I turn off and power back on. It will take forever for the marquee light to turn on eventually. Could it be the starter and where is located. Thanks

It’s the little white thing (could also be metal) sticking out of the marquee light base, unless it’s an old-fashioned kind that looks like a little little long lightbulb and would be behind the metal. If it’s the easy to replace kind, you can get those at Ace Hardware or Home Depot.

Take out bulb and starter, put them back in.  That will probably fix it.  If not, remove fixture, buy $10 under cabinet light, cut off the plug, splice to wires running to the old fixture.  It’s not worth repairing old fluorescent fixtures anymore, the parts are obsolete and inefficient.

It is usually around where the wires enter the light on one end, look like a capacitor, just push and turn it will just pop out, The voltage rating on it is important however make sure your replacement matches...Yots brought up a good point some are metal and some are white plastic, But they both work the same.

So, I picked another one, killer instinct 1. A few days after I found killer instinct 2, this one popped up. Very fortunate to have both now!

And another one added to the two I already have.  It's a z back cab with marvel vs capcom in it. Got it for a steal. Will need restoration.
