Alpha Centuri Tokens
« on: July 09, 2019, 10:53:45 pm »
So I am going to have custom Alpha Centuri tokens made. I have to buy a thousand of the damn things. If anyone wants some, I will sell them at my cost in lots of 50 coins. I will let you know when I have them in my possession.

Vigo gets 50 coins free for coming up with the Alpha Centuri name.

Ond gets 50 coins free for designing the logo.

I am switching all of my games to use the anycoin mechs. Once I have my custom tokens they will be free for everyone to use in my machines. I will also have signage posted that the machines can also take real coins. Any real coins will be collected and donated to the Wonder Lake Neighbors Food Pantry. I think this will be a good system. People can donate if they want to, and they won't feel pressured.

Sweet! Thanks Mike! Really looking forward to this!

That is an awesome idea.

Yeah. My friends all know that I want a donation check to the food pantry if they insist on a gift to me for holidays. I don't like it when the cashier at a store asks me for donations. It is annoying. I wouldn't think of asking people at one of my parties. At the same time the food pantry does great work. This way is much less awkward.

Agreed. I tried to be charitable, but damn, the whole guilt charity thing at checkouts lanes really bugs me. I generally like the donation banks sitting at the cashier register, though. Some I give to, others I don't. I like your plan on how to do it at your arcade parties, because it doesn't become a spectacle about who gives or not.

I love how you're busting my chops about buying unneeded ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- in every other thread, and here you are with 1,000 tokens coming.

Yeah. I am still trying to negotiate the minimum number of tokens down. It is too many. They wanted 5000. There is no way I was going to do that.

In the time it took me to type this you probably bought another hunk of plastic that will get used a couple of times. ;D

I submitted the Alpha Centuri design file to the token company this morning. It will have my logo on one side and it will say "No Cash Value / No Refund" on the other side.

Have you tried contacting Santoro - IIRC he said he still has the dies for the tokens he had been making so you might be able to use your custom art on one side and one of his old dies for the back instead of the stock one ( and he might know someone that could get the price lowered a bit since he's placed a few orders in the past) - And if you use one of the old BYOAC sides you might be able to find a few more forum members that might need some in order to increase the Qty ordered ( Maybe post a thread with pricing for 50/100/250 tokens - to see if there is any interest ( just be sure to get the funds before placing the order ! )

I am buying the minimum. If anybody wants some that is great, but I don't expect anyone to help me defray my costs. Using the stock image on one side saves me 200 bucks, and I like the stock image for the flip side.
Thanks for the advice. I had thought of putting that logo on the other side.

Did you make them same size as what your local car wash uses?  That's another way to defray costs.

Unless the cost per token is higher than the car wash tokens ! ( which with minimum orders is usually the case )

I've been told that before.  I should think about it.

You know, honestly the thought never occurred to me until my neighborhood car wash spit out some arcade tokens from the change machine once.

Where are you getting the tokens from? I've been wanting to have some tokens made up for awhile, but was always deterred by the large minimum orders. If the company you're working with will print up a lesser amount and they do quality work, I would like to see about getting a quote.

I sent an email to get the minimum for custom tokens lowered. They are not cheap.

Thanks Mike. I am looking at nickel plated brass tokens. I believe that 0.984 should work in a coin mech that takes quarters right? BTW do you have someone lined up to do the artwork for this? I would need someone to help me draw up what I have in mind. Unfortunately I'm not so good in the art department...

I am using the logo under my user name. Ond designed it for me. I don't think he is for hire. The project interested him so he did it.

I am not sure what size will work for you. I am fitting all of my machines with the Anycoin Mechs. That way people can use any coin they like. All of the actual coins will be donated to the Wonder Lake Neighbors Food Pantry. The tokens are available if people don't wish to donate.

Ah, I see. I will have to see if I can hunt someone else down to draw up the artwork once I'm ready to take the plunge...

I have the "anycoin" mechs in my machine, but I wanted to make up tokens that would work in any mech that takes quarters. I think the 0.984 size is most common substitute for quarters. The TokenDirect website says that size "works in coin acceptors". I will confirm that when I place the order though. Thanks again for the info and plz let us know how satisfied you are with the tokens once you receive them.

Their art department is supposed to contact me in the next couple of days so I can approve whatever they have to do to translate my image to a coin. After that it will take a couple of weeks to get the tokens in my hands.

.984 tokens and quarters are not directly interchangeable, but there are legit Happ mechs that will handle both.

I get 50 tokens?  Cooool!  Thanks Mike.  I love the token collection I've accumulated so far.  Some I bought back when Santoro was making them and some were given to me by Pixelhugger.

These are going to be extra special because I helped out with the design.

No doubt! I have mine mounted on the wall here. Even got Mr. Santoro to sign autograph it for me.

That's a great idea Lew and looks very nice indeed!  I'm totally stealing it.  I will autograph my design for Mike if he wants.. :P

You are the bastard that really took me in here and got me hooked. You are the reason I went to Zapcon the first time.

Those 50 tokens already belong to you brother.

Fortunately for me I have a good business. I suck at making money from my hobby.
