Any love for Neo Geo Pocket?
« on: June 23, 2019, 10:54:31 pm »

I think it’s an excellent lil machine. The thumb stick is brilliant and there are enough games around to keep it interesting. I tend to play mine mostly on flights as the overhead light is normally perfect for it. Prices are a bit steep now sadly so I’m glad I’ve got what I’ve got

Yup, big fan of the NGPC. Great fighting games, great puzzle games, and some of the Neo Geo ports are really well done. I wish there were more RPG’s but I can be satisfied with Card Battle Clash.

I’m waiting to grab a Neo Pocket SD, once the creator catches up on his preorders. And BennVenn is in the works for making his freckleshack backlit LCD mod compatible with the NGPC.
Finally, Woozle, the creator of the GBAConsolizer has a working prototype of a NGPC Consolizer (ability to connect to a modern tv via HDMI output).

Things are looking great for NGPC upgrades in the very near future.

Woozle put out a video capture from his NGPC Consolizer:

Looks like he's been making some great progress with it, and has been putting more focus into it these days.
We might see an NGPC Consolizer soon!

Here's his recent twitter post with some small details as well:

Losing screen size on those backlit screens was a dealbreaker for me. The screen is small as is, I couldn’t go any smaller.

Didnt bother me as I struggled to see the original screen most of the time unless the light was right.

I rather loose a few mm and actually see it

I'd rather gain 60 inches and see it!  :lol

The awesome sprite work of some of these NGPC games on my 60" OLED is going to kickass!

I'll wait this one out until the Chinese clones come out.  NGPC has zero nostalgia for me so it'd have to be fairly easy/cheap to get into before I would take the plunge.

Well, since nobody likes Neo Geo Pocket, I'm gonna derail slightly here.  Poked around on aliexpress and there sure are a lot of kits to convert GB and GBC to backlit.  Some even coming with new shells.  Might be kind of a fun and pointless quarantine project.  I've got an SP, DS, and DS Lite already but why the hell not.  No idea why in the world I've kept all these Gameboys... I guess because they were cheap and small.  Anyone have any positive experience with converting an original Gameboy or GBC?

Been meaning to do that myself.  I should probably get the plumbing in order and get the carpets cleaned at grandma's before I start on any big projects though.

Supposedly Analogue's "Pocket" portable device is supposed to launch this year. It will cover Neo Geo Pocket, Lynx, Game Gear, and GB/GBA/GBC. There will also be a dock so you can play those on your TV. It's not original hardware, but I think it will be a pretty good deal for all that it does.

Yup, same here, but to two of them:

Also backlit (with bivert) 2x Gameboy Pockets:

And finally, I do own Woozle's previous product, the GBA Consolizer:

Playing the GBA Consolizer on my big screen, with SNES controller is so awesome. The Castlevanias, the Metroids, the updated Final Fantasy's...  add the GBC library, and you've got a pretty amazing console for big screens.

It's a great time for the gaming hobby. Lots of these cool products to breathe life back into our old original systems.

I'm really looking forward to the NGPC Consolizer. There are a handful of games I'd like to replay, but I don't want to see it on a smaller backlit LCD, especially with that ugly 3D Printed bezel...that would just annoy me while playing.
Right now I play a few games here and there using conventional lamp lighting, but once the Consolizer is out I get to really enjoy the games on a bigger screen.
Doesn't matter if you don't have nostagia for this system, the games are high quality, and anyone who enjoys good games could appreciate the system. The fighting games are superb, with great art and controls (there are modern games now trying to recreate this esthetic) . SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighter’s Clash is addictive, and pretty fun for the collectionist card battler player. There are a few RPG's, tactical RPG's, and a smattering of sport, shmup, arcade style games that play really well on this system.

Anyway, this might be lost on this crowd, but I for one am buying the consolizer day-1. YMMV

Woozle put up another video with improved audio. I've been chatting with him in PM's and he mentioned that his previous video was just grabbing the audio from the headphone jack, which didn't sound as great.  This video he actually soldered in the audio ADC circuit and the audio quality increased 10 fold!

Does sound and look good.

Ya know I never understood why they made the slug mgs bullts look like tumbling casings on the NGPC.

I don't understand why this system came out after the game gear... hell this would have been closer to the gba era and yet everything looks and sounds so terrible.  It's metal slug so I'm sure it's fun, but it looks like something released on the zx spectrum.

To be fair it looks better on a smaller screen (much like all hand helds imo) and Metal Slug is far from the best game on the system.

However its only a 16bit system so despite it being the same gen as the GBA they are in no way comparable really.

It was part of SNK’s downward spiral but I do  like some of the games on it.
Some of the fighters are awesome and the Sonic game is pretty good to.
You could even hook it up to a DC for unlocking in game content on some games.

Why does no one like the SP? I got rid of my regular GBA as soon as the SP came out. Love it, especially the NES styled one.

Why does no one like the Game Boy Player either? I made one of those old S-video/ RCA cable consolizers, the very first one ever, back when GBA was still new, and I got rid of it when the GB Player came out.

Awkward shape and style.

The GBA was far superior in that sense.
Biggest failing was lack of back light.

It’s well documented that the Game Boy Player suffers from major input lag, and inaccurate timing reproduction of the GBA with the occasional frame stuttering . It also does some strange non-integer video scaling causing the pixels to not be crisp and clear.
There are also very few options.
The Game boy Interface homebrew software fixes this, but it’s unofficial and is a pain to get set-up. Plus this wasn’t available back in the day.
https://www.retrorgb.com/gameboyinterface.html

The GBA Consolizer is awesome, accurate, and minimalistic for setup. Plus you can use an SNES controller on it without any additional adapters.

Hmm, the Super Game Boy and later Game Boy Player (official) both seemed perfect to me, but it's been a while since I played either (around release). So thanks for the info!

Hehe, well you'll be shocked to find out that Nintendo was 0-2 on both the Super Game Boy and Game Boy Player.
The Super Game Boy also suffers from timing inaccuracies, and runs games at a slightly faster rate than the original hardware. This is why speed runners can't submit their records using a stock Super Game Boy.

There is a really easy mod that you can perform on your SGB to get the timings accurate to the original hardware, which is kind of a simple underclock to bring the speed back down to what it's supposed to be: https://www.tindie.com/products/qwertymodo/super-gameboy-clock-mod/

Honestly at this point the gameboy player is just as good an option if you use the homebrew software and have a hdmi adapter for your gamecube.  Of course the gamecube controller isn't well suited for the gba...you'll probably want to either get a hori pad or hook a real gba up via a link cable and use that for the gamepad.

So you'll need:

Gamecube = ~$50
Hdmi Adapter = ~$75
Gameboy Player = ~30
Memory card 2 Sd adapter (for installing hombrew player) = ~$10
and

GBA + Link Cable = ~$50
or
Hori pad = ~$30

So it's around $200 if you don't have any of the stuff mentioned and are willing to wait around until you get a good price for each item plus it takes some doing to gather all of that stuff period.

So yeah it's a bit of a hassle.  Imho it's currently the better option if you are willing to jump through all the hoops simply because you can use a real gba for the controls and have a more authentic experience and if you are going to do a good gamecube setup anyway it isn't that much of an added expense.  Honestly I'm not sure why we haven't seen a gba controller for the consoleizer show up yet.  Use the gba rebuild kits on ebay, make a custom pcb and put a snes gamepad chip on it....

Right? That would be pretty sweet.  I wonder if the GBA Consolizer supports the Super Game Boy Commander Controller. Problem is, they're too rare and expensive to take the risk of trying it out. And also, not a great option for GBA games, but would be sweet for GB and GBC games

Never did pick up that sweet controller, but I did get the GameCube alternative. Back in the day I never noticed the speed differences, but the Super Game Boy 2 corrects all of the faults of the SGB1.

Woozle put up another video with improved audio. I've been chatting with him in PM's and he mentioned that his previous video was just grabbing the audio from the headphone jack, which didn't sound as great.  This video he actually soldered in the audio ADC circuit and the audio quality increased 10 fold!
