Space Invaders Mother Board 12V Shorted
« on: June 21, 2019, 08:15:27 am »
Question: I have a short circuit fault. My entire Space Invaders Motherboard +12V ( Side Connector 3-4) bus is shorted to ground ( Side Connector 13-16). I did have this on the +5 as well but when I recapped (Just the Electrolytics ) the Motherboard this cleared. Any ideas?

If I was to guess without looking at it...Seeing how it took out  both rails (and you patched up one side) the problem IMO wasn't the M/board initially but the auxiliary ps board that caused the problem...They actually make a more reliable modern day switcher for that nowdays...Yes you heard me correctly, No more big filer cans and cooked transisors.

Here is what I found. It was one of the Blue tantalum caps, they look like M&M's. 22uF/25v. After pulling it and with my ohm meter set at 200 it read .02 ohms across it. Yep, I would call that a short.
