I hear the Wal-Mart museum and Walton art museums are worth visiting.

Chinatown was kinda cool.  Bins of immoral sharkfin that sells for thousands of dollars a pound laying out in the open.  Chinamen illegally gambling in the park complete with spotters watching for cops.  Good times.

Chinatown in SF is amazing. Especially if you can speak Chinese.  My cousins and I went to one of those illegal gambling spots, but it wasn't in a park, it was in the back of a restaurant stockroom.
Walking in through the kitchen was like a scene out of Hard Boiled, bunch of disgruntled kitchen staff looking at us as if we're were undercover cops. I was worried I was going to get a butcher knife in my back.
We get to the back of the stockroom, among the boxes of dried foods and bags of rice, and there was a rusty metal door with a large bald-headed-tattooed chinese guy sitting on a stool in front of it, asking if we've been there before and who we knew. Of course my cousin said yeah, we were there to meet up with my Uncle Leo, so he let us in.  The door opens up and it's a stairwell leading down to a large room of nothing but mahjong and craps tables.
The clacking of the mahjong tiles, people smoking and gambling, girls going around taking drink orders...i swear I felt like I was in the prohibition days. I was so scared I was going to get caught in a raid.
We stuck around for about an hour or so, I don't play mahjong (that's an old person's game), but I tried a bit of craps with my uncle. I know a little bit of the rules, but I'm in no way fully versed in that game. My uncle made 15K at the craps table that night and took the whole family out for dinner with the winnings.
That was one of the wildest experiences I've had in SF.

Haha.. you're lucky to be alive.  Here they play Chinese chess and gamble openly in front of cops and smoke underneath no smoking signs in our Oriental mall.  I'm told there are hidden poker rooms but that seems awfully too convenient for me to believe it.  There is some weird arcade that never has anybody in it and only has a couple of those giant sitdown games where you shoot at Chinese dragons and ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  I felt uncomfortable as hell in there.

Is alcatraz good?

Alcatraz was fun for me but I enjoy that type of thing.  If I was into black socks with sandals I would be the quintessential ‘that dad’.

I went to Chinatown also.  Really wasnt my thing.  Crowds always throw me off.

I was fortunate enough to devote a day visiting  Gilman Street and finding some awesome record shops in Berkley.  Thats more my thing.

Combination of growing up on an island where  if you see it in the store once, you'll never see it again, mixed with all I do now is eat, ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, sleep, and work means that if you actually get me in a store these days I'm just sweeping that entire shelf into the cart and moving on with life.

Make sure that car is running, bro. You let me down in November.

OK, now that I've cleared out most of the Christmas alcohol supply (man that Crown Royal salted caramel flavor was hard to get rid of) I've been having some coherent thoughts.  Last year a few BYOACers rented a house near the Convention Center (home of ZapCon 8).  This year I wanted to rent a nearby house as well and use it as a courtesy/club house.  I was thinking we could host the Friday night cookout there (we usually go the Monastery Bar).  I can bring a grill and cookout food.  This would save us a carpool trip at least.

I'd like to also host the Saturday breakfast there.  I'm trying to talk my son into manning the omelette bar, he is discovering that he likes the kitchen and trying new recipes.  I have two cuccos in my backyard ready to supply the fresh eggs.

I'd also like to host the Sunday night after party there.  Last year we finished out all the beer I found on sale and played on an awesome Vectrex games (among other things).

The house I'm looking has two bedrooms and three beds (one queen and two twins).  I'd like it if we could get some people to stay there.  I would make the reservation and pay for the rental, anyone who stays there can stay for free with the understanding that we would be hosting the rest of the group the whole weekend.  I don't feel like it would be fair to try to make anyone pay for a house that the rest of us are going to (hopefully) use as a party house.

So, I need to know if this is a good idea from the group.  I don't want to break our tradition of going to the Monastery Bar on Friday but I think this might be a more comfortable alternative.  The house is walking distance from the Convention Center (maybe two blocks).  I'd like to invite people from other groups as well so if we do this we'll need to spread the word around.

Also, let me know if I should start the rental on the Thursday before ZapCon, I think some people came in early.  I think it worked out last year to leave Monday morning; so either Thursday - Monday or Friday - Monday.

Let me know what you think (PM if you want).

Let's make this the Best Year Ever!

Last year, I rented a house with Opt2not and Nephasth and we did Thursday - Monday and it felt right.  The place we stayed in was still available last I checked. My only complaint about staying there was there's absolutely nothing to do in Mesa if you need a break from Zapcon.

The secret is to drink a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- ton of beer all day and then stumble upon chicken wings.

Marinated in Italian dressing, then dusted with lemon pepper.  Opt2not did a batch that was just salt and black pepper that reminded me that classic seasonings are classics for a reason.

Best sausage I could find in that desert was from Earl Campbell.  Not sure if I shared any of those or just ate them for breakfast alongside that case of Modelo.....

Yup, for bbq wings I don’t do much else to wings other than salt & pepper. Maybe a bit of garlic salt, and lemon juice if I’m feeling fancy.   8)

I would prefer beef wellington if you are grilling TTC but if I have to suffer through wings with a homemade rub or sauce I'll take that too.   :dunno
Though I don't think PBJ knows what he is doing when it comes to wings.

...I'll bring some chicken wings.

Second batch of wings toasting in the oven.

I've grown to prefer turkey wings but, on sale is on sale.

I'll probably soak these in Italian dressing and grill them low for New Years.

None of these are mine, unfortunately.  But I did trade services for smoked wings at Twin Peaks.

 :gobama

No argument here.  It was a dozen orders of 10 wings at $10.49 each.  So, 120 wings.

My local Chinese place does 30 lemon pepper wings for $15 and those things are better than anyone else's.  Outback has a price break on 20 pieces, but you can't order that online.

Anyway, the $100 I made from that funded booze and chicken wings at ZapCon.  So, I hope it was worth it, Mike.... and Ond... and TacoTownCharlie....and Arroyo... and Opt2Not.... and Nephasth... and all you other ---daisies--- that ate 10lbs of my chicken wings.
