Question regarding ATOM and Sony PVM's (L5)
« on: May 22, 2019, 02:30:43 pm »
Sorry if this should be in a newbie thread somewhere but do I need to concern myself with ATOM if I'm connecting to a Sony PVM L5?

Here are the supported formats. I don't want to damage my precious PVM and rather not flash the card with ATOM unless i absolutely need to. Thank you

Looks like you are fine as the chassis on your monitor can handle almost all frequency inputs.  The reason for using ATOM-15 is that most traditional 15khz monitors can’t handle the higher frequency default bios video output when a computer first boots before starting Windows where the 15khz signal from CRT-emulation driver takes over.

ATOM-15: Flashed with 15 & 31 khz and component sync checked. Connected to my LED panel, I'm not getting the Windows desktop after reboot, it shows the BIOS screen.

Shows the BIOS (Dell) screen, goes dark, LED goes out of range (expected) but it doesn't return to Win7 desktop after full boot (Win 7 set to auto-login)?

Why did you flash if you didn't have to?

If you have set your graphics card in Windows to output a 15khz signal (presumably you have), then a lot of modern LCD won't be able to display that resolution (they just show a black screen with no signal).  Try attaching it to one of the digital outputs on your graphics card.  That should bring it back once in WINDOWS.  Boot up will still not display anything on your LCD.

25kHz is not supported according to the screenshot above.

None of the digital outputs display the desktop in Windows.

25kHz is not supported according to the screenshot above.

None of the digital outputs display the desktop in Windows.

Atom-15 flashes your graphics card with a new bios that lowers the default video signal on boot up during bios from a 31khz one down to 15khz so you don't damage a 15khz only TV (640x480i) (when rebooting your computer).  Your PVM can handle 31khz signal so you didn't need to flash your graphics card.

Having said that, if your not getting any signal at all from the digital outputs it sounds like the Atom-15 flashing may not have gone well.  Are you able to swap in a different graphics card and check how it works?  If so then you might be able to try to re-flash your graphics card back to it's original bios assuming you saved it before flashing it with the Atom-15.

Ah! When I saw the 25kHz option in Atom-15 I figured it would just not allow it to ever output that specific range (just insurance since the video cards are cheap and PVM's are out of control).

I did backup the original BIOS, I think I'll put the card in my other PC and see if I can restore it that way.

Thanks for the help Arroyo.

UPDATE - Moved ATI card to another PC, restored the BIOS, good to go. Still don't understand why I wasn't seeing the Windows desktop with 15khz & 30khz both checked in the ATOM-15 bios but whatever, moving on. Luckily I have a PVM..

Does Conposite sync actually work? Seems broken...

Although I haven’t used it plenty of people have reported it working.  You can also buy one of these:

I’ve read that it may not be as clean as using composite sync but lots of people use it and report it working fine.

Followed directions here - http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=295, composite sync still doesn't work.

 · You must set both H and V sync polarities to positive for all modes. So after enabling composite sync, you must generate and install all modes again, but first you need to go to the monitor tab to edit your selected monitor preset and modify it with the proper polarities, e.g.:

        monitor "arcade_15", "Arcade 15.7 kHz - standard resolution", "4:3"
                crt_range0 15625-16200, 49.50-65.00, 2.000, 4.700, 8.000, 0.064, 0.192, 1.024, 1, 1, 192, 288, 448, 576

    · Finally, still in VMMaker make sure to mark "Export settings to GroovyMAME" in MAME's tab so the correct polarities are used by GroovyMAME.

- If you're using an VGA to BNC cable, remind that composite sync is ouput through the h-sync cable, so if you're using a T connector, unplug the v-sync cable.

Followed directions here - http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=295, composite sync still doesn't work.

Notice those extra steps are *only* for legacy cards and you must NOT follow that part for HD 5000+ cards. You didn't say what card you're using.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

I only tried it because composite sync isn't working either way. I tried another CRT completely just to see if I could get 15kHz and the sync still doesn't work.

Think I'm over it at this point, thanks for the replies. Best wishes.

Just buy that dual BNC connected I linked above and try that.  It should work with your PVM.

Sometimes you need to create and install the modes again after enabling c-sync. It doesn't work just with the default mode (EDID emulation). You need to overwrite it with the custom modelines created afterwards.

Consider telling us what card you're using, some day.

ATI HD 5750 1GB (DVI-I > Analog VGA 0 or 1, tried both same thing)

Windows 7 64 Bit Pro, 8GB RAM

"Composite Sync" doesn't work as intended for me, it works fine using my MiSTer.

It's the H-sync cable. Notice that before C-sync is enabled, I have a vertical rolling picture, but the picture is fine on the horizontal, this means H-sync is in there.
