Video Game Exhibit in London using MAME

Dave Dribin:
Hopefully you have heard about "Game On", the history of video games exhibit at the Barbican art museum in London. It looks really cool, especially if you live in or near London:

What you probably not have heard is that they have what could be the worlds first "legal" MAME machine. :) Apparently, they could not get the real cabinets of some vintage games, so they decided to use MAME to show off these games instead. They received official permission to use the following ROMs:

[*]Phoenix, Taito, 1980
[*]Space Panic, Universal, 1980
[*]Galaga, Namco, 1981
[*]Amidar, Konami, 1981
[*]Scramble, Konami, 1981
[*]Frogger, Konami, 1981
[*]Burgertime, Data East, 1982
[*]Donkey Kong Jr, Nintendo, 1982
[*]Mr Do!, Universal, 1982
[*]Moon Patrol, Irem, 1982
[/list]
They are using a Cyrix 366Mhz based PC hooked up to an I-PAC and then to a projector (2m projection). The controls are from a company called Suzo. <shamelss-plug>They are also using Game Launcher as a front-end. <shameless-plug/>

So, go check it out!  And snap a few pictures of Game Launcher on a big screen for me. :)

Some of those games I can understand being unable to locate (Space Panic and Amidar), but I can't believe they couldn't find a Galaga. That is only like the second most common game in the world.

Anyway, that probably wasn't the first legal MAME cabinet, since I am sure more than one person has built single game MAME cabinets to replace defective boardsets that they own.

There's a difference between first legal, and first officially sanctioned by the rom copyright holders (but lets not start that type of discussion in this thread, eh?).  It's a neat milestone regardless.

Congrats Dave, you must be proud.

Wait a minute.. this too is a year old... bah!

It is old, but it isn't really a dated topid. Not like it got stale or anything. (A stale old topic would be something like "Who's going to the June 2001 auction in New Jersey?"
