Random games you have discovered by accident.
« on: May 11, 2019, 12:38:17 pm »
So this must of happened to all of us at some point especially with things like Flash carts and RGOTM comps.
I found one today called Nekketsu Oyoko which is a Side Scrolling beat em up which I discovered by accident after pressing the wrong button when playing some Saturn.

Its alot of fun and has some interesting mechanics for its genre like being able to go backwards through the stage and has some fun stages like fighting inside a whale....

Anyways what are some random fun games you guys have found?

The OutFoxies has always been a huge hit with everyone I show it to.

LocoMotion is a huge favourite on my arcade because of the simplicity to play but the difficulty in getting that high score.

And a big favourite for trackball games is Shoot the Bull even though the graphics discourage people when it first fires up.

Neat stuff I stumbled across when I wasn't scouring any "undiscovered gens" type threads:

There's a beat-em-up called Gladiator: The Road Of Swords which I gave a shot when a Mamedev mentioned it was newly emulated. I don't normally try out any old game I see referenced, but I'm glad I did in this case.

Other games that I randomly tried out and made it to my Favorites lists not based on popularity or any recommendation include Butasan/Psycho Pigs, and the shooters Cho-ren-sha 68k and Flame Zapper Yotsujin.

Never heard of Gladiator but looks good.

Blatant ripping of Neo style though!

Lady Killer is so much fun.  It's not for kids because of pixelated boobs but the gameplay mechanics are great.

Bullet , by Sega (System 16B) is a pretty obscure one. It plays with dual sticks, and is similar to SmashTV/Total Carnage.

We played a bunch of chicken shift off pbj’s Pi at Zapcon. Cool game, surprisingly difficult.

One I randomly discovered a few years ago, had never heard of back in the day, never hear about now and really like is Bank Panic.

Brute Force is another random one I found a few months ago. I'm not sure that I'd call it "good" but it has some interesting ideas and I found it intriguing enough to play through. There's some stuff in it that was frankly ahead of its time - swapping items, returning to a main stage between levels that unlocks new paths as you progress. People behind this one either went on to great things or left the industry.

Another one I like but have never seen in the wild and nobody talks about is Arm Wrestling.

Chicken Shift is fun as hell. I'm glad I found a receptive audience for that pi cart.

Gladiator is a fun one. I picked up the cartridge after trying it.

Puzzli 2 is a surprisingly fun game about swapping fish.

Interesting ideas, indeed! Side scrolling beat-em-up with Multi-directional attacks, well ahead of its time!
Charging up your strikes is kinda cool too, and I like how the city you’re in feels vast.
Very cool game. May not be a great game, but cool nonetheless.

Ninja Baseball Bat Man
I have a love/hate thing for this game.  About a decade ago, a friend of mine and I came across this after he coded a randomizer for one of the mame front-ends we were using. We thought this game was both hilariously beautiful and awesome, and would tell our friends about this gem.  I remember seeing PCB auctions at $100-150 go unsold for a while.   Then years after the Angry Video Game Nerd put out a video on youtube about this game, and then all of a sudden everyone was talking about it, and the PCB price shot up 3x.  I don't even know what it's at now, probably closer to $500.

But now whenever I see someone mention it, I can't help but think about AVGN's influence on the gaming crowd.  Not saying that's where you heard of it, Osirus23, I'm just jaded that I never nabbed the original PCB when it was barely known. It's one of my arcade hobby regrets.

I found it on my MAME cab long before I ever heard of that guy. I didn't even know he did a video on it. His later videos really come across like he's phoning it in and just aren't fun anymore.

Had this on my Atari ST 30 years ago and loved it. Probs in my top 20 played list. Gets pretty difficult pretty quickly.

To add to the list would I would add Crazy Balloon - meant to try Crazy Kong and ended up really liking this instead. It's as basic as it gets but strangely addictive.

Another one would be Cannon Dancer/Osman. Strider reincarnated.

Jumping Jack is like Universal bred with Namco and Capcom. Fun enough, and slightly too hard. I finished the first board once, back in my first or second game....

I played that game when I was a kid. My parents took a Vegas vacation. We stayed at Circus Circus. Kicker was in the arcade there. I played it a ton.

I like to cycle through the games on my cab sometimes and just pick a random to play. That's how I came across "Fighting Hawk". I'd never played it before but love it.

It's just a really basic vertical scrolling shoot'em up - similar to 1942 - two buttons, shoot and mega-shoot which kills most things on the screen (predictably you only get a few of those).

Great game. Give it a go if you get chance. I think it's in the All Killer No Filler collection if I'm not mistaken. :-)

I might doubt that. VERY pretty graphics, and cute music - but uber easy, even for NA players. Needs a LOT more baddies on the screen. Like it wasn't finished....

I’m still trying to figure this one out.

It was a simple looking game. Black background, with a yellow coin that dropped onto a green skinny platform that you would tilt to balance and move the coin with a joystick.

Anyone remember this game’s name?

YES! Thank you!

I guess my memory is slipping, no black background and no yellow coin. At least I got the green platforms right.. :lol

I like to cycle through the games on my cab sometimes and just pick a random to play. That's how I came across "Fighting Hawk"...I think it's in the All Killer No Filler collection if I'm not mistaken. :-)

I might doubt that. VERY pretty graphics, and cute music - but uber easy, even for NA players. Needs a LOT more baddies on the screen. Like it wasn't finished....

Maybe for you!!! For me it's just the right level of difficulty. I have the reactions of a sloth that's feeling a little bit under the weather....

YES! Thank you!

I guess my memory is slipping, no black background and no yellow coin. At least I got the green platforms right.. :lol

You fell prey to the human rendering system in relation to memory. Notice the contrast of those colors.

@uptown47: when a game has more flying than fighting, it becomes a non-game.

After completing my trackball machine the other day I discovered a fun little puzzle game called Attax.

The Ms loves it.

Attax is one of the few outside NBA Jam / Gauntlet Legends where you could save a player profile..... perhaps the only other arcade game that does that?

Looks like a similar save system to ironman off road.

Attax looks interesting though. Music reminds me of hypnotoad

Exerion.

Won an ebay auction for an Exerion in a converted Zaxxon cab for $0.99. Was a few hundred miles away. Convinced the seller to deliver it for $40. Should have never sold that machine. I ---smurfing--- fell in love with that game. Most hate it, but I'll always have eyes for Exerion.

Not really obscure, but give The Irritating Maze a try.

Exerion has some novelty in graphics and ship flight dynamics. I recall the game play lacking or being weird.

Forty dollars for one hundred miles would have been taking advantage of them.

I would give you more examples where I mentioned it but the search doesn't work.

My buddies kids like it so much that I downloaded both seasons of the cartoon show for them.

It's loosely connected to the TMNT universe....in the 2003 series they actually make a brief cameo.  I've also mentioned the game more than a few times for the record.

When I get the new build finished I'm going through that High Score challenge. Launchbox has got community high scores built into now as well. I shall look forward to finally proving how incompetent I am :-)
