How to use cabinet speakers with PC
« on: May 09, 2019, 03:37:50 pm »
All,

I tried wiring up a mini-stereo plug (ring+tip) to the 2 wires that carry audio to the speakers in my SmashTV cabinet.  However, I get no sound.

The image below shows the back of the speakers in the cab.

This did not seem to work.  Any suggestions?  Do I need an amp?  If so, suggestions?

You need some kind of amplifier. Maybe something like this.

If you are connected to a pc, it is unamplified.

Back in the day we'd just hack up some pc speakers, but thanks to the internet you can just buy stuff like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTM2O5C/ref=dp_prsubs_3

Remember, as-is arcade speakers are pretty crappy so unless you are going to change them out there really isn't any need to buy anything fancy.

I used this one  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1UHTU1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
paired with this power supply https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018X975QG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
in a pair of desk speakers and a set of big bookshelf speakers that I built.

The 24V power supply gets more out of the amp than some of the cheaper 12v ones that come as part of a bundle.
I think technically the specs on the TI amp chip says it can draw more than 3A, but I tested the amp on a bench power supply before settling on this power supply.
I don't remember the exact current draw, but 3A was more than enough.
