Even the early 2000s still feel like later emulation history to me. I remember checking Zophar's Domain for emulation news every day, SNES emulators that would shade everything monochrome yellow unless you paid for it. When the first N64 emulator was finally capable of running homebrew pong at 2fps, then everyone's minds collectively blowing when UltraHLE came out and actually running Mario64 at a reasonable frame rate with a 3dfx accelerator.
Those were exciting times.
Checking Dave's Classics and Retrogames every day, Nesticle in Windows 95 running on real DOS, spending all day downloading an N64 ROM over dialup, IRC, Usenet, etc. Good times.
I bought a 3Dfx card specifically for UltraHLE. I got it to run decently but I only had a keyboard to play with an N64 games didn't work well with that so I really never played anything. I owned a Nintendo 64, but I was just always really into emulation.
