Just wondered if anyone else caught the keynote address on Stadia.  What did you guys think?

i didn't but i know enough from posts as of late over on pcmr.

it seems good in theory... but chrome eats/leaks enough ram already...let alone throwin' another API on top of it.

besides... i'm not real keen on paying to play games...that aren't "mine". (says the arcade)

By the name they gave the platform it seems they target online multiplayer demographics mainly.

A lot of ppl these days don't see games as anything else but that anyway, and it's better for them if it becomes like Netflix.

I am of split minds on it really.

On the positive side “theoretically” anyone has the ability to play the latest games online without needing a £2k PC rig.

The downside is in reality lots of people wo t have the connection for it and as said above I like to own my games.
Nothing I like more than to hold a game in my hands look at the art etc.

TL;DR: Sounds great! Would love to use the audience streaming features! Also: It will probably destroy the free Internet.

I'm really interested to see how it plays out. We're a household of gamers, and all end up using multiple devices to fit different needs.. The kids have 'gaming laptops'  that are heavy and bulky but run games from Steam and Epic well enough, but then also have Chromebooks for things like Netflix, YouTube, and schoolwork. My wife's laptop is a lighter machine that struggles on more CPU intensive games. I've got a full desktop for games/video editing but it's tucked away from main living space so I've also got a lighter laptop for playing games in the same room as everyone (Basically every day is a LAN party at my house).

So the desire to be able to run better graphics, or more resource intensive games on lesser hardware is quite an attractive suggestion (also gaming laptops get really hot). At the same time, since we have a social media presence the whole "play with your audience" side of it is really interesting. Our core demographic currently isn't really gamers, but we've dabbled with Twitch as a potential side-channel of content creation.. which leads me to the next part: Bandwidth.

We had planned a Twitch stream that would have involved multiplexing 4 streams of game video + 4 webcams into a single feed to send off to Twitch. Unsurprisingly even a really nice Ubiquiti AC-Pro access point wasn't too thrilled with that amount of continuous streaming data, and several of the laptops don't have built-in ethernet anymore. So on the internet front we've got the base tier in our area which is advertised as 100/10mbit,  and real-world performs more like 90/13. I believe Google suggested they could do 1080p/60 in 25mbit, with the intent to optimize to 4k/60 in the same bandwidth.

So let's assume they get the 1080p rate to usable at 15mbit. Realistically how well is my internal network going to cope with 75 mbit of highly latency sensitive data when all 5 of us are playing? I've been genuinely impressed with how well the SteamLink boxes work on a purely internal network, but I've only ever run one at a time. I've got a machine built two virtualize two gaming desktops to test playing Steam-Streamed games to the Chromebooks, but haven't had a chance to deploy it and test it out yet.

So here's another can of worms I've been thinking about. Net Neutrality. I've always been strongly of the opinion that the net absolutely must remain neutral.  However, if services like this start becoming profitable for companies that have the pockets to start buying politicians, then paid prioritization of traffic such as this, in order to reduce latency, starts sounding like the final nail in the coffin of a neutral internet.

So yeah, I've got a few thoughts about it.

Eh it's not going to work.  Streaming gaming is absolutely the future, but here in the states at least we need better infrastructure for it to work properly.  Many areas are still on frikkin dsl, or worse, don't have broadband at all, and they are talking about 4k 60fps streamed games.  If anyone could enter the gaming market new at this point it'd be google, but then again apple tried it... didn't work, nor did it work for amazon, steam (for a console anyway), time warner, those dudes that made the ouya, ect.

It's a paradox really... companies may not support your system because it might not sell well... because nobody supports it.  Now the streaming aspect helps that somewhat, but ifaik you still need permission to feature a game on a streaming service.

This is why I think they haven't supplied pricing yet.  I have a feeling its going to be sticker shock for a lot of people.

It was funny to see how many times this has been tried also.  But as they say a journey of a thousand miles...

Yeah it can work, but to get a really good install base I think it needs to work consistently for a very large portion of the install base and I don't think we are there yet.

I think if anyone has the power to do it Google does.  The companies that tried it before just didn't have the means to do it.

Did anyone go for the Google Stadia Founders edition? If so, what do you think so far?

I did,and I'd say I regret it.

It was "only" £120 (UK here) and for that you do get a Chromecast and a (very) decent controller and I guess you can use both for things outside of Stadia (assume the controller will work as a USB one at least, though I've not tried it and it was expensive for just that).

You do get 3 months free of the "pro" subscription which allows you to play the free games (Destiny 2 and Samurai Shodown with other(s) added each month I assume). You can buy/play games and not need the pro subscripion too but they seem steep to me for something you only "own" while Google host them and Stadia exists online (which might not be long  :))

Disastrous launch! You'd think Google would've nailed that at least. Publicity weak - I'm telling people about it and noone seems to have heard of it) Units arrived late, some got units but not the Access code needed to play them. Destiny 2 down for 8 hours or so once people were starting to play (not just Stadia, Destiny 2 was down on PC etc too). Lag widely reported, I get it certainly (internet only around 20Mbps and it was on WiFi both of which I intend to improve myself).

I don't have 4K TV, but even for those who do I believe its not "really" 4K in any case (yet?). It looks great to me, on HDTV, but as I say I'm comparing to PS3 generation not the latest. I don't play games much now, modern ones certainly not, and this was a nod (and inexpensive, compared to buying a console/PC one) towards that for me but it's not working out.

Early days, so will see how it pans out (I suspect some good free games in December to appease disgruntled founders) but not impressed so far.

Essentially I've paid £120 to be a beta tester. A beta tester who has a lot of issues to report. I'll persevere for the remainder of this week but I expect to be returning for a refund as things stand. Perhaps it's just too early and given time it or an Amazon/Microsoft/Sony equivalent solution will take the Netflix-like gaming market but I don't think that's yet.

OUYA 2.0?

If the moon was new and the wind wasn't blowing and after most people on the cable modem node went to bed, I could stream games off the net on my OUYA just fine.
I was surprised by how well it looked and worked.
then someone in my neighborhood would stream a 4k movie off netflix and I was playing C64 again.
still awesome!
right?

I don't remember Ouya being a streaming console, I thought it was just an Android device for indie stuff. Are you sure you aren't thinking of OnLive?
