Did anyone go for the Google Stadia Founders edition? If so, what do you think so far?
I did,and I'd say I regret it.
It was "only" £120 (UK here) and for that you do get a Chromecast and a (very) decent controller and I guess you can use both for things outside of Stadia (assume the controller will work as a USB one at least, though I've not tried it and it was expensive for just that).
You do get 3 months free of the "pro" subscription which allows you to play the free games (Destiny 2 and Samurai Shodown with other(s) added each month I assume). You can buy/play games and not need the pro subscripion too but they seem steep to me for something you only "own" while Google host them and Stadia exists online (which might not be long
)
Disastrous launch! You'd think Google would've nailed that at least. Publicity weak - I'm telling people about it and noone seems to have heard of it) Units arrived late, some got units but not the Access code needed to play them. Destiny 2 down for 8 hours or so once people were starting to play (not just Stadia, Destiny 2 was down on PC etc too). Lag widely reported, I get it certainly (internet only around 20Mbps and it was on WiFi both of which I intend to improve myself).
I don't have 4K TV, but even for those who do I believe its not "really" 4K in any case (yet?). It looks great to me, on HDTV, but as I say I'm comparing to PS3 generation not the latest. I don't play games much now, modern ones certainly not, and this was a nod (and inexpensive, compared to buying a console/PC one) towards that for me but it's not working out.
Early days, so will see how it pans out (I suspect some good free games in December to appease disgruntled founders) but not impressed so far.
Essentially I've paid £120 to be a beta tester. A beta tester who has a lot of issues to report. I'll persevere for the remainder of this week but I expect to be returning for a refund as things stand. Perhaps it's just too early and given time it or an Amazon/Microsoft/Sony equivalent solution will take the Netflix-like gaming market but I don't think that's yet.
