Guide Charlie through six different circus events including Fire Rings, Tightrope, Trampoline, Ball Walk, Springs, and Flying Trapeze. Timer bonus points are added for finishing a level and more points are awarded for completing a round without losing Charlie. The game is over when all Circus Charlies are lost.

----------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only.

- No continues!

- No MAME cheats!

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are optional, but encouraged!

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the screen if playing on a real machine.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

My wife and I have played this a few times recently at a local bar.  I'm not 100% familiar with all the ins and outs yet.  The game lets you choose a difficulty level to play at.  Unless we find something unusual in the scoring I'd suggest we let each player decide.

Love me some Circus Charlie. I have a working PCB waiting for me to build a cab for it. It could be a long wait.

So, this IS the version that allows you to choose the stage, yes?

Correct.  When you start a new game you will see this option screen -

I don't know enough about the the scoring of the game to determine if we all needed to play on the same level to keep the scoring consistent.   For now I say let each player decide.

Speed seems to be the key for getting high scores in the first levels. I got the timing for the first three levels, if you do them fast enough you get 10k bonus for each level. After you have played a level it gets harder, so the top time bonus goes out of the window.

I went level 1 - level 2 - level 3 - level 1 - level 1.

Level 3 is the easiest so far, you can get past 2 enemies in one go, just jumping through the level without going for the bonus bags you get the 10k time bonus easily. Playing it the second time, I get a 5k bonus, but the kicker is that you have to play a slightly different level 3 after this, I don't have the timing for it yet.

This is fun. I really like the graphics, too. All but one version allow level select. (On that note, why the Centuri version?) I wouldn't say they're levels, but I can see the period decision on making the 'boards' selectable. One and two weren't bad, so I played sequentially for a bit, but three was tough, so I took advantage of selecting it and finally got the timing. (Reminds me a little of Mappy.) I expected the bounce height to translate to going between trampolines, but it doesn't. This makes some sense given the period not quite having 'variable space' games, though it could have been a cool dynamic. Four I played a few times, and am taking a break. The parabolic air between balls is a little un-nerving.

I was thinking about this last night, though hadn't explored it. The first two boards become too easy pretty quickly, and would result in 'milking', and back in the day less quarters.

So far, I have found that the best way to milk points is on the horse stage. Very difficult, but lots of points to be had.

162,700. Still no reliable timing on level 5. L1 & L4 maxed out, L2 one time, L3 3 times, died on L5.

That pic came out weird. I'll have to make a better score.

Had some time to spare while running errands and stopped into the local barcade to play their dedicated cabinet.  I do believe I like playing this game more on a dedicated machine.  It is also has beautiful artwork.

Didn't help my score much though.   >:D

I'm not going to pick it this round but any thoughts or concerns with Q*Bert for a future contest?  I'd like an excuse to play this one more but the joystick may be problematic for some.

This was done in the original compo and most people were confused by the controls. I did a test using the keyboard which went ok-ish. Tried using an xbox 360 controller up/down/left/right, didn't work at all. Remapped the controls to the diagonals, this works. But you better be good at hitting those diagonals, otherwise Q*Bert doesn't move.

Out of curiosity, how do the controls work on the original cab? Diagonals or straight? I can't wrap my head around the straight controls because there is two ups and two downs, and no right or left. I can't translate that to up/down/left/right.

On a dedicated machine the joystick for Q*Bert is a 4-way mounted diagonally.  That way the Up/Down, Left/Right are actually diagonal.  I believe the technical term is "caddywhompus".  As I recall with the Atari 2600/400/800 versions you had to manually "turn" the joystick in your hand so it was diagonal.

Q-bert stick is like it shows on the cp. The simplest solution is usually correct.

So who's picking the game?

I have never seen an arcade cabinet, I'm only interested in the games, not how the cab looks like. It didn't occur to me that the joystick directions might be on the CP, hence my question.
