Am I the only one that hates open floor plans? The "great room" concept works when you have no air conditioning and need air flow, but all it means is zero privacy and everything is loud in a modern home.

I tend to agree. I like a kitchen that is open to a dining room, but it stops there for me. I think the tend is swinging back to rooms again anyway, I am hearing more and more real estate people suggesting to think twice about options before bashing out walls.

For me, it depends on the size of the house.  My entire footprint is 22' x 35' (roughly) with a 12'x12' walled kitchen so although the rest of my house is "open" it is still quite small.  When the house used to have individual rooms, there wasn't a single wall you could put a 3 cushion couch against - not enough room with doorways and wall lengths.  So it works for us and I'd never go back.

I very much depends upon the overall layout, but I'm not a huge fan either.  As you say walls keep things quiet and well insulated.

I lived in an apartment for a year that was a bedroom on either end of a giant 15x40 room.  It was useless. You couldn't do anything in that room. Either line all your furniture in a row against the wall or turn it sideways and block foot traffic.  It was the biggest waste of 1,200 Sq ft I've ever seen.  We moved into a 750 sq ft place divided into small rooms and it was infinitely superior

Did the contractors need to get access from the basement to move any of the lines or could they do it all in the kitchen?  My basement is finished so any work in my kitchen would need to be done from above, which probably means ripping up the floor in spots.
Heh, you know you're not from California when...
No one has basements in Cali, this is earthquake country over here!  In California, especially Southern Cali, the old way of doing pipes and gas lines was to run it through the concrete floor slab. This was kind of a pain to deal with since the gas stove had to be relocated from that little peninsula and moved to the wall.  My contractor had to bust up the floor slab in two places, one where the gas line came out of the floor for the stove -- to seal the line and fill concrete in -- and the other to junction the gas line to the position where the stove is now.
For electrical it would be run through the attic down to the walls, but also now-a-days most things get ran through the attic rather than the floor slab.
Lucky for us, the previous owners updated and replaced the water pipes so all we had to deal with was the gas line in the floor.

My house is coming up on 100 years old (I also have a detached garage but my laundry room is in the basement) and the last time the kitchen was updated was before we moved in 16+ years ago.  It looks OK-ish but the cheap home depot laminated cabinets are peeling all over the place.  We also renovated the rest of the first floor about 6 years ago and by opening it up we lost a TON of cabinet spaced/storage.  We currently have nowhere to store food in the kitchen - the pantry (if you can even call it that) is in the basement, which is a pain.

After seeing what you did I'm going to really explore doing something in my house soon - it makes a huge difference.
100 y/o!  Yeah, you are due for some updates.  :)

The kitchen was our priority for reno's, it's the most expensive task out of what we want to do to the place. We eventually want to re-do the bathrooms, but the kitchen was really important given that the original was so tiny with not much storage and counter space. it really does make a huge difference once it's done since the kitchen is constantly in use for our family.

Am I the only one that hates open floor plans? The "great room" concept works when you have no air conditioning and need air flow, but all it means is zero privacy and everything is loud in a modern home.
I'm partial to both.   But I think our house has a good compromise between the two. Our kitchen and dining area is opened, but the living room is confined from them.  We have a semi wall dividing the kitchen area from the living room (it's really just a threshold opening with pocket doors in the wall if we wanted to really close it off), and a side hallway that leads to the 'bedroom wing' of the house.
For our reno's we actually put up a wall, rather than taking 'em down. We filled in that small side doorway to the kitchen, which lead to the front door area of the house, so now when you walk in you have to actually make your way through the living room to access the kitchen. Which is fine, it keeps the noise from the kitchen/living room contained, and it gave us more counter space in the kitchen.

The house feels a bit more open than normal, but without having 1 giant great room we have 2 spaces that keeps the layout semi-open.

Heh, you know you're not from California when...

Ha!  Never even crossed my mind... I'm in NJ and pretty much every house has a basement (along with water issues  ;D).

100 y/o!  Yeah, you are due for some updates.  :)

It's been a slow process.  6 years ago we basically gutted the entire house other than 2 bedrooms upstairs and the kitchen.  We added on a family room on the first floor, master bedroom/bathroom above that and a full basement below.  We even dug down in the existing basement, which had 6' ceilings and was unfinished, to match the new basement floor level in the addition so now everything is 8' down there.  In the process we also redid 2.5 bathrooms so there are all new cabinets, floors, fixtures, counters, etc. for those.  We turned 1/2 the old TV room into a home office, we replaced the roof and all the siding and got new windows (except for 8 of them which I still want to replace).  You'd never guess the age of the house by looking at it because almost everything has been replaced by now!

It just seems never ending - I have a list of at least 5 "big" projects left to do - remodel the kitchen, remodel the attic (it's a walk-up and it's our guest room but it needs gutted for new sheetrock), get a new driveway and garage slab, redo all the hardwood floors in the house (we have no carpeted rooms other than the movie room in the basement so it's a big job) and redo the entrance to the house (all the molding is rotting around the front door).  Ugh.  I do love this stuff though - just wish everything wasn't so insanely expensive!

I used to watch This Old House when I was a kid and it gave me nightmares about homes in New England. Pretty sure every house up there was built out of mud and plaster. Every $20,000 renovation and add a sunroom turned into a $200,000 rebuild the whole damn house.

It looked okay, I didn’t get a chance to play it.  Appeared more interactive than the new Rampage game.

Yeah, it’s in great shape. No broken wood pieces, intact side art with just a few scratches. Everything works. I’m looking at some new shells for the guns.

Happ still sell them but the cost to buy and ship them to here would not be worth it :(

So I go to participate in the high score contest, and fire up the cabinet I made as cheaply as humanly possible out of a surplus Trinitron Monitor from the mid 90s, surplus Dell SX270, and a shipping pallet.

Turn on cabinet, fans roar, no picture.  Okay, fine, monitor problem.  I disassemble the cabinet that’s actually bolted to the monitor frame to hold it together, pull out the beast CRT, and start taking apart the monitor.  Turns out it wasn’t the monitor.  That monitor displays absolutely nothing without a signal coming in.  I should probably write a note to self about that and put it inside.  So I put the monster back together.

If SX270 didn’t send chills down your spine already, that was one of the Dells with bad caps.

Looks like that’s the problem there.  Pulled them off, and it was almost impossible to clean out the holes.  I finally had to put my soldering iron on 845 degrees, shove a Bobby pin into the hole, and heat up the pin while pushing as hard as I could on the pin.  Not sure if it was the corrosion or lead free solder but damn.

Testing with an LCD, this should have been step 1...

And back together.

Best part of this whole exercise is that it turns out that Empire City isn’t even on this cabinet!

 :dizzy:

Is the psone version any good?
I have a PS2 I could play it on if I got the right gun.
