Look into P-roc boards (https://www.multimorphic.com/p3-pinball-platform/hardware-control-system/) which is basically straight to USB boards.

I believe they are what guys are using for homebrew pins, as well as putting them in older machines  so they can program more modes etc... Pretty interesting.

Mission Pinball is a open source software to help program pinball machines. All very cool stuff.

Has anyone actually completed a new game using one of those boards with an old playfield?  Seems like I've been hearing about boards like this and custom games for almost 10 years and haven't seen anything completed.

Cactus Canyon Continued and  Bride of Pinbot 2.0 come to mind.  FAST Pinball also makes boards.

Nightmare before Christmas and Minions were 2 completed custom games.

I heard all of those as well. Scott Danesi also completely ripped the guts out of an EarthShaker and made 3 different games with it.
