2006 Backpack Toys Teddy Ruxpin
« on: December 10, 2018, 08:32:37 am »

So my buddy, an avid thrifter told me that my local Value Village
had a Teddy Ruxpin for $50. He said the price is worth it and the
condition looked good. I never had one of these, and I was tempted
to go pick it up. A few days later on his thrift store rounds he
mentioned they still had it. I'm honestly not much of a thrift store
hunter, from what I understand these places are searched daily by
dealers looking to score. However I often donate to Value Village and
I remembered I had a coupon for 30% off my purchase. So Sunday on my rounds
I happened to be in the area, so I popped in, saw Teddy was still available,
and asked if my coupon would work. They said it would, so Teddy would be marked
down from $50 (Canadian) to $35 + tax ($40 Canadian all in).

Needless to say I picked up my first Teddy Ruxpin. He was smaller than I remembered.
Turns out I got the 2006 version by Backpack Toys. He's in good condition, very clean,
but was without a cartridge.

I was hoping to be able to figure out some kind of hack/mod so he would work without
tapes/cartridges. So far I haven't found any information on that. I've seen where the older
models, G1 thru G3 apparently can work via an iPod with MP3 files of the original audio.

From what I've come to understand, the audio tracks contained the story on the LEFT side,
and the RIGHT side contained a series of pulses/tones that would generate the blinking of
the eyes, moving of the mouth.

I'd love it if my Teddy would be working, but I'm cool just to have him as a display piece.
I'm sure now I'll look for others, hoping to find the older, larger version.
If anyone is familiar with these is $40 a good price for the 2006 model ? Anyone aware of
any hacks for this model ?

Thanks all

I'd like it if I could just get my bear to play original stories if converted to MP3.
But I've had no luck finding info on the 2006 model, but here's to hoping I can find a mod or hack that is in my skill set/level.

I seem to remember (may not be correct) that the originals had stereo tapes, and one side would play audio and the other sent some sort of pulse signal to control the mouth and eyes.

If you find you need some sort of audio help, send me a message and I will see what I can do.

Thanks @ eds1275

From what I recall and what information I've found online I think you are correct.
My version however, the 2006 version uses some sort of cartridge.
I'm going to need to track one down via Ebay.

I've seen videos where people have the original Teddy, and use a Cassette/CD adapter, play MP3 audio files and Teddy works.
I was hoping I could do the same, but with this guy needed a cartridge I doubt it.

I haven't found anything online specific to my model and hacks that may be available.

I posted some images I found online, I don't physically have a cartridge yet.

Would be awesome if you could hack the cart and just record a sh*t ton of the stories on it, but I know it isn't that easy. LOL
