I'm taking in all opinions on the CRT. I'll see if I can lay my hands on a ~24" CRT TV which is suitable.  A 20" CRT is going to look too small in this cab. One thing I'm sure of, I'm not going to put all this work into this cab and then be unhappy with the CRT, that ain't happening.

I got the rebates done on the top panel today. The underside..

..and the top.  I'll need to cut the curved corners out to 90 degrees to fit the glass, a job for tomorrow, before I apply the first coat of undercoat.

You have designed this around accomodating a 27" and from having one that size myself, I will say that it will still be enjoyable with that screen in it.

That said...

If you can find a 24" then see if it isn't a huge hassle to integrate and try it first.

Both would work of course, but one of those will be more pleasing to the eye just based on bezel dimensions.

Either way this cabinet will be an oustanding example.

Nice cut lines on that rebate.

Didn’t you already screw up once on the monitor?  You seriously continued building without another CRT lined up?

I mean, we all know I’m just here to naff up your thread, but….. bro?

I think we're just talking the possibility of downsizing from a 27" in hand.

But I could be wrong!

Yep, just discussing an issue I've noticed as I progress the build.  These things happen. And just to be accurate Jim, I've "screwed up" twice on the monitor - just gotta keep the facts real, bro. The top plate can accommodate any size monitor from 27" downwards so build progress is business as usual.  It's a minor thing really, the viewing angle on a cocktail cab is a bit steeper than on an upright, this has more impact on a comfortable playing field size. I don't have a diagram handy but I'm sure you know what I mean.  When you design your own arcade cabinets like I do it's a balancing act between aesthetics and functionality.  In real terms that means adjustments (and learning) as I go. Sharing these concerns during the project is always useful, in the thoughts I get back from people.

I'm working on the control panels for this cab for a bit.  They are fun to do and straightforward.

Thanks for the video Ond, very useful. Looking forward to the next part

Is this still the 27" component input CRT TV you are using?

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,158914.msg1745139.html#msg1745139

I notice that it is a flatscreen anyway, which IMO is great for a cocktail. Better viewing angle compared to a curved CRT, helps you get away with a bigger screen. I'm sure it'll be fine.

The drawback with larger flatscreen CRTs is they often have poor geometry, especially at the corners, because it is harder to deflect the electrons. Also they were made in the sunset era for CRTs so made as cheaply as possible and with less QC. But sometimes you get lucky and they are just fine. Worth checking it out with some test images.

The good news is that it is possible to adjust/improve the geometry yourself, if you read up on the theory first and have the patience for it. Also those sunset era basic TVs are pretty simple to fix if you need to.

Smaller flatscreen CRTs are less likely to have those poor geometry issues. I have a few 21" flatscreens (component) and they all look great.

Just as long as we are keeping things real.

Let’s see you make a playable cabinet, Andre.

I have to admit, once the CRT is fitted into the top plate it does look pretty slick.  I've been staring at the design next to my peg board for so long, seeing that for real was a bit of a wow moment for me.

Thanks all for the positive reactions, as bobby say's - I'll press on!

Progress on the second CP today, that is, surface prep stages and fiber-glassing.

Subscribe away gentlemen!  I make an effort in the editing to try for something more interesting than just watching paint dry.  :lol

I mentioned some time back that I wanted to build a support frame to put the CRT in while I'm working on the cab which will allow me to work on it and lift it into the cab when needed. The CRT has (removable) hook points which I can fix chains on a block and tackle and lift it in and out of the frame.  Raising and lowering the CRT with the block and tackle has a real Frankenstein's laboratory vibe going on  ;D .

"CRT Emudriver 2.0 and a Retrotek VGACTV1 VGA to Component transcoder"

That was my original setup and it worked well. The Retrotek transcoder developed a fault in one of the color channels and I ended up replacing it with the superior GreenAntz transcoder (see the pic below).

Since you mention it, I've found the following make for a 'winning combo' using CRTs in an emulation system that uses component in.

- Good understanding of how GroovyMAME & CRT Emudriver 2.0 work together
- Quality VGA-Component Transcoder i.e. GreenAntz
- Reasonable quality CRT TV with component in
- access to the service menu on the TV to set scan geometry
- some knowledge of convergence and purity adjustments via yoke controls (if needed)

RGB modding is the next level up for high quality builds using a CRT TV but the differences in quality seem minimal.

Thanks wp34, I'm looking forward to fitting the glass and inner bezel so the whole thing looks properly integrated.  It's my "icing on the cake" for this project.

These bolt holes in the side panels ...

... are history. Side & control panels have been sanded and refined with bondo/filler (all pits, holes gaps etc) and coated with high-build primer.  The yellow high build primer is a great undercoat for the rich yellow paint work to come I think.

Most of the panels have been coated in high-build primer now. The rough, porous MDF is transformed into a tougher material with clean edges.

A progress update, I work each day at the surface and paint finish of this cab, it's coming along quite well. I'll focus on getting the control panels done first but I'm spraying all painted parts daily and sanding them back.  This one's yellow paint finish is done.  I was going to paint the middle sections of these black (see the concept render) but I've decided to use permanent vinyl (matched black) wrap instead. The vinyl surface is better for game playing and should look really nice as well.

I'm not going to post umpteen pics of surface finishing but will next update when I start assembling different finished parts.

I believe Ond just revealed his secret there... you need to do lots and lots (and lots) of fine coats with sanding in between (for this I would use my most worn out fine-grade sand paper).

Using a heater during winter (IMO electric bar radiator best) helps bring out the gloss and shorten drying time, not really needed in the Aussie summer.

Beware of dust :D

Time to watch Ond's latest vids.

Man that work is crisp OND, this is definitely shaping up to be a "Mona-Lisa" of the arcade builds.

I'd love to be there, and see the looks on peoples faces, when they see it in person and ask "where did you get that"... and then you show 'em your build pic's. :dizzy:

Not sure how I feel about you covering that glorious paintwork with so much vinyl !

Although I am sure there is a design element to it that will reveal itself upon assembly- so I wouldn't say I am concerned really...
