ALL NEW BYOAC High Score Competition! Games played so far: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,156317.0.html

Game #25 - Nibbler

----------------------
Game Name: Nibbler
ROM Name: nibbler
----------------------

Settings:
No. of lives - 3
Extend play - Every 3rd board

Controls:
Joystick: 4-way
Buttons: n/a

Nibbler is an arcade game by Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corporation. Its gameplay is a variant of Pac-Man and Snake: the object is to navigate a virtual snake through an enclosed maze, while consuming dots along the way. The length of the snake increases with each object consumed, making the game more difficult. The player must also avoid colliding with walls or obstacles, and must also avoid colliding with the snake's own body sections. After all the objects on the screen have been eaten, the player progresses to the next wave, involving harder obstacles and/or higher game speeds.

The contest ends on Sunday December 16th, at midnight, PST.

Never a big fan of this one...

23,240

Looks as if I got 52,390 once in the past--I don't recall how/why I got that score...I think I'm repressing that memory...

I thought I'd give it a go, and found I got rid of it some years ago.

This does not seem to be a good game for the U360 joystick.  I have not been able to get a decent score yet.

Thats a shame, it really sings on the magsticks.  We play it on a J-stick, as well, but that is REALLY not great for Nibbler.

I'm working on a rig to play Nibbler with my BitKit and a 4-way Wico but don't quite have it ready yet.  With the U360 I get some really weird problems in the corners frequently.

50,720

Agree on the U360. But then I discovered that nibbler wasn't listed on my UltraMap config as a 4-way game. I got that configured and in one game my high score went up from 25,930 to 50,720. Still not the best controller for this game and it sometimes doesn't respond how I want, but much better than when it was in analog mode.

Thanks I'll check that.  It does feel like it isn't registering 4-way.

Wico for sure. It doesn't 'drop out' when you let up a little. Other mechanical sticks will be less forgiving. U360 needs a special map for such precision, but grid and arc do not complement, so it's more about your technique.

Switching to a true 4-way helped considerably.

Welp, i know there's a few hours left, but unless there's a late entry (there may be), here's the results:

epetti - 57,610
acvieluf - 56,630
wp32 - 44,260
jasonbar - 23,240

Barring someone posting in the next few hours, looks like it'll be jasonbar's wp32's turn to choose the next game.

Never thought my score would be the winner. I had to laugh when I read the Wikipedia article on the game and it said it was the first one to add 9 digits to the score to allow for higher high scores.

I love this game, but it takes me a lot of playing to even make it past wave 11.  Unfortunately, time didn't allow.  Nice job though! GG

I found a repository with Nibbler in it and gave it a few goes. Super hard, and I noticed two things. In attract mode it says 'does not stop at corners'. It does, but the time varies according to the directions available. From one of the corners it's probably four times as long as if every cardinal direction is available. Then it cascades depending on the open-ness of the layout. Next, the speed of activation of input is FAST. Note the speed of character change when setting initials. It's like an analog control set really high. In essence, the game seems loaded.
