Vertical games cause vertical rolling
« on: December 02, 2018, 06:58:23 pm »
I just finished RGB modding a Sony KV-27FV300 (https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=63622&p=1342460#p1342460), and got crt_emudriver 2.0 set up and did some testing with MAME.

I followed the installation guide here: http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1052#p1052

Horizontal games work and look great.  However, whenever I launch a vertical game, I get a vertically rolling image.

Any suggestions?

Guesswork time! It might be because the vertical games will use different video modes with higher scan rates. While these scan rates are still in range, the TV might not be happy with the... mix, let's call it. The horizontal frequency vs the vertical frequency and whatever voltage. That's just a guess, however.

I'm assuming you've used composite sync out of your GPU and you're not mixing sync for yourself?  If you have a V-hold option of any sort, perhaps in the service menu, i'd give that a go. Or you could try adding a 1K pot in the sync line before it hits the composite video input of your modded TV.

After that, you might try combining sync for yourself. There are some ideas in section m) of the guide linked below. I'm not sure any of this will work though, so i'm reluctant so say just go buy an Extron 190F or something, though that might work as well.

EDIT: oops, I forgot the guide: https://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/87668-A-guide-to-connecting-your-Windows-PC-to-an-SD-CRT-TV-PVM-or-Arcade-Monitor can't remember if i already linked you to it.

I can't help but feel there's something obvious i'm overlooking here, so maybe someone else can help out.

I mixed sync myself.   If I were to use composite sync out of the GPU, what pin would it come off of?

Horizontal sync.

Pin13, h-sync, ans Paradroid says. You might try altering values of resistors in your current mix setup though. I can certainly make a picture lose vertical sync by playing with the values.

I forgot to link to the guide above, so i edited my previous post.

I'll have to try that.  Really makes me wish I had set up a breadboard to experiment before soldering everything in.

Your monitor can't tell whether the game is vertical or horizontal, so it's impossible that all horizontal games work while all vertical games don't. It's a matter of video modes after all. If it's vertical rolling, chances are the vertical refresh rate is too low for those modes. Usually this happens when you try to push too many lines, e.g. 288p for Galaga, then the only solution is to lower the refresh rate to something around 52 Hz. Most TVs would show that refresh without issues, others might not.

If that's the case, the solution is to use a custom crt range like this one:

monitor custom
crt_range0  15625-16200, 49.50-65.00, 2.000, 4.700, 8.000, 0.064, 0.192, 1.024, 0, 0, 192, 248, 448, 496

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt

IDK, that's a Sony flatscreen late-model CRT, i really reckon it would handle 50Hz.

It stabilizes if I use the resolution switch and force it to 320x240.  I will have to play with custom modelines.  Someone else suggested replacing the 1K resistor on the csync line with a 1K pot and adjusting the resistance..  that sounds too manual however.

You would almost certainly adjust the pot once, to cover all your modelines, and leave it. If that's the fix for this, of course.

If that's the case, the solution is to use a custom crt range like this one:

I have a similar issue with Galaga and Pengo, plus other vertical games while some vertical games show okay using a Sony Triniton consumer set. Sorry for not providing a log and I didn't feel like making a new thread, but this custom CRT range will probably solve the problem.

How can I make these values game specific or is it better to chuck it into a vertical.ini for simplicity?
