Out with Pi in with Tinker
« on: November 17, 2018, 01:23:56 am »
So I finally caved and got me an Asus Tinker Board, and what a little tinker it is.

With the latest Retropie image for the board, I can honestly say I am impressed.  Some emulators do not work, but it is early days for this platform.  Kodi runs like a true daemon.

It can warm the room somewhat, and it fits in my NES enclosure, but I had to source a 486 heat sink as the tiny one it comes with doesn't do a proper job.  Those tiny fans have that screech you can do without.

N64 games run much faster and games that do not run on the Pi runs full speed on this Tinker Board.

Frys have it on sale for $55 with free shipping.

So tell me your experiences and what games you got running as it still is work in progress.

No composite video.

Yes there is.  Via the 3.5mm jack.  Like the pi does.

What I found that it was missing was lag.  No lag at all.  ;D

Really? Because Wikipedia and the Asus Tinker board home page says line out and mic in from the 3.5mm jack. You positive?

I remember seeing something in the manual about it.  After reviewing your sources (remember wiki stands for What I Know Is), it seems that there is no composite, which is not a deal breaker.  So I stand corrected.

It would be completely crap playing Dreamcast and N64 games in composite on a 70" UHD TV.  But if that is all you got....

I only have one Pi that uses composite out and that is the original 256mb Model A.  That is used for my Stargate cab and TV, so I can see the usefulness of having composite with legacy technology.  Everything else is HDMI today.  It probably was a decisive factor when designing the tinker board, like unshared USB and 1GB Ethernet with 2gb memory and a better GPU.

It flies, but heats up quickly and intensively, which could be a candidate for quiet mineral oil cooling.  It's early days but what you get is a better platform, also tried Android 6.0, and having fun getting Google Play to work at the moment.

Sounds interesting, I have only just finished my Pi to a degree where I can just sit down play and enjoy so I am not looking to upgrade yet but I was wondering what the next steps will be :p

I will watch with interest :)

All pi’s have composite out. :dunno Dreamcast came with composite cables. It’s resolution is 640x480. I have a Dreamcast. My tv is a crt. Not sure where your going with this. But for some people, lack of video outputs is a bummer.

Yes I understand now.  Bummer indeed.  I picked up a nearly new Dell 22" for $6 at goodwill with dvi vga and hdmi.  No compsite out unfortunately.  Sure is lightweight.

Looked at some comparisons between tinker and 3b+ and tinker is roughly 1/3 faster.

I think though if I go with something other than a PI i'll get one with eMMC built in.
as long as it's <75$.

Yeah I thought the one I got had an emmc.  Seems that there is two versions.  The standard and the model S.

I got the Tinkerboard installed with Android 6.0.  I had to do the old switcheroo with Google Play but got most of my emulators and Digital Leisure laserdisc games installed.  Plays like my old JXD 7300b with out the blisters.  ;D

It is all early days.

How does this compare with Odroid Xu4 as that runs PSP, Gamecube, saturn and of course dreamcast and jaguar. The other bonus is you can just install the retropie port on that.

Just bought the XU4 today and will be here Thursday. From my research, the Tinker and XU4 are very close. I went XU4 so I could install retropie

This is my thinking but the XU4 seems to be ridiculously expensive here in the UK for some reason.

I have heard good things about the Nvidia shield TV but there isn't a nice interface for the emulators.

spec wise xu4 should be faster.
Octocore and faster graphics.
4 of those cores are slower helper cores.
Interested in seeing what the XU4 can manage.
