Rowe-Ami R84 Prelude issue
« on: November 16, 2018, 03:29:32 pm »
Hello everybody,

I am new at this forum and have a problem with my jukebox. I recently got a R84 Prelude, and after fixing the volume control circuit on the amp and installing a new cartridge on the record player, it was working fine. But now I have a problem selecting some records. The problem was probably already there, but because I didn't have enough records to fill the Rowe with, I didn't notice it yet.

When I power up the jukebox and select 100 as a first song, it will not play it. Also, the carrousel will not spin. It will play 101 and every other A-side selection. From I believe selection 228 en higher, it will not play right also. Instead, it picks up a other selection and plays it. In the display I see the selection it picked up, not the selection I pressed.

But if I at the power up of the machine select 200 as a first song, and then cancel the record, it automatically picks up nr 100. When I press cancel, it picks it up again and so on. When I press clear memory and cancel, I have no more problems selecting records. Every record I select also plays.

Does anybody have an idea what this could be? The only thing I have noticed is that the reset butten on the cabinet is not working now, and that the voltage of the backup battery on the CCC is below 1 volt, and that should be 2,4 so I already ordered a new one.

Is it possible that the problems I have are related to the battery? Or possibly some cold joints?

Hope that somebody has a solution, thanks!

Regards,

Misja

If you look at my posts you will see I had the same problem, and the fix was changing the battery plus I had to replace some resistors where the battery had leaked and corroded them, hope this helps. Keith

Hi Keith,

Thanks for your reply. Can I just change the battery without having to set up the CCC again? I don’t have a service manual yet, so if there is some kind of procedure i’d rather get a service manual first. Even though it has a few issues, the R84 is playing records right now and I would like to keep it that way  :)

Hello Misja,

You should never operate a Rowe Ami especially a R-84 onwards with an unbalanced mechanism.
If you scan the mechanism in this condition you will more than likely find you will have damaged the spag wheel because of the whip lash effect of an unbalanced mechanism.

I advise all of my customers that when they start loading the mechanism by filling the records that when they press the reject/cancel button on the mechanism that they put their left hand on the side of the mechanism belt to ease the mechanism around to put in more records. when the mechanism is fully loaded replacing a few records is not an issue.

The sprag wheel gear tends to get cut through by the mechanism/basket gear.

Whilst the baket is unbalanced it is pointless adjusting the opto switch, this must only be checked after the basket gear has been cleaned and also the opto switch.

I would not delve into the mechanism control or the CCC these need to be checked out by a specialist such as myself or other Rowe Ami specalists in USA or other countries.

Alan

Hi Alan,

I didn't know that it's better not to operate the R84 with a unbalanced mechanism. But when I started filling the mechanism with records, I didn't start on one side of the carrousel. Instead I started filling the jukebox row by row (horizontally on the front panel from top to bottom :) ). So records on all sides of the mechanism. If it was unbalanced, I guess it was just slightly. As far as I can tell the mechanism works fine. Also, I don't see any signs of extreme wear, besides the normal wear you would expect with a machine that is about 38 years old. But I am not an expert so not 100% sure of course.

If I can't solve the problem myself, I'll send the boards to an expert. But I would like to change the backup battery myself. That shouldn't be a big problem. My only concern is will the CCC operate as before after I change it, or do I have to perform some kind of initial "setup"?

Thanks,

Misja

Hello Misja,

With no power to the CCC I suggest tht you messure the battery voltage. It should read 2.4 volts DC. A replace needs to be a 2.4 volts rechargable battery. Varta do some that fit, if the the later type then the 3 leg Varta batteries are an option.

Usually after fitting a new battery you will have to press the Clear Selection Memory button because the CCC can sometimes start selecting all of the selections. The R-84 to R-88 jukeboxs CCC are not programable so they do not require setting up.

Hi Alan,

The voltage of the battery was below 1 volt, so 2 days ago i changed the battery. Since then the jukebox is working perfect! When i start up the jukebox, every selection plays instantly. I am very happy now  :applaud:

But there is some oxidation on the soldering joints so in time i want to resolder the whole board, of take it to a expert. And the next thing on the list is the power supply. It produces a irrritating buzzing noise, so I have to take a look at it... Any suggestions?

Regards,

Misja
