Loud buzzing from speaker
« on: October 28, 2018, 11:12:28 am »
I’ve modded my Arcade1Up as per ETA Prime’s YouTube instructions, but my speaker in the control panel which I have hooked up to a 12V amp is generating very loud buzzing noises, as per this video I made of it:

You will see there is also game sound so it’s not just hooked up completely wrong; I’m just not sure where the loud buzz is coming from.

I did not run here first; I did consult the Googles. Here is what I’ve tried:

Different 3.5 mm audio cable

Same power supply as main controller board

Different power supply from main controller board

Hooking up arcade, computer, and amp power supplies all on different power strips and outlets

Different amp

Ground loop isolator

None of these seems to help. I’m stumped. Any ideas?

It doesn't sound like interference or a ground loop.
Just sounds to me like the gain is set too high.
I don't see where it has any gain adjustment though.

What is supplying the signal?
Does it do the same thing when connected to your phone or mp3 player?

Signal is coming from an HDMI out from a laptop, into an HDMI LCD controller board, sound then goes through a 3.5 mm audio jack as shown here (some of the cables are unplugged at the moment).

Audio on the laptop itself is fine. I did try turning the system volume way up and down.

I tried plugging the amp into my phone as a source and I got only the buzzing, no real audio at all. As mentioned above I do get game audio when connected to the laptop via HDMI.

Found the problem! Being the electrical genius that I am I was wiring the lcd board to the amp with a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm male to male rather than a 3.5 mm to RCA, never stopping for a minute to consider whether that made sense. Works perfectly with RCA!

All wiring jobs by me are half off for the rest of the week...
