Is the Radeon R7 250 compatible with CRT Emudriver?
« on: October 27, 2018, 03:54:16 am »
Hi guys, I’m very new at all this 15hz stuff and I’m not having much luck with it. I’ve currently got a Radeon R7 250 graphics card and I’m not sure if it is compatible with CRT Emudriver. If it isn’t, can you recommend a small profile card that is please? I’m looking to emulate arcade games and console wise I’ll be going as far as the Megadrive and SNES. Cheers!

Hi,

Welcome to 15kHz dimension! :)

For Windows 7/8/10 64-bits, yes, your card is the list, it's a good choice:

There are some really useful readings on the subject:

Thanks for confirming that it is. However when I run CRT Emudriver, it’s not showing up as a compatible device.

I’m on Windows 7 by the way.

Ensure that you are using "GCN" emudrivers version.

If yes, it might be an exotic card version. You can check if the card identifier can be found in the drivers INI file.

I had downloaded the wrong version of CRT Emudriver, now I feel silly! Right, just about to have a go at setting it up. Thanks again!

Ok I’ve installed the drive, tried setting up VMMaker and I’ve now plugged my VGA lead into my arcade monitor I’m getting 2 and a half versions of whatever image is displayed.

I have tried following your guide but when I click Enable EDID emulation my LCD screen stays blank. Also my graphics card only has a DVI and HDMI port so I’m not sure what drop down option I should be selecting?

What output are listed in the EDID emulation dropdown menu? Make sure you are using beta 14.

You will have to excuse the poor screen shot, I’ve currently got an old Packard a bell CRT monitor hooked up as my PC screen. I’ve also noticed that it says Radeon R9 M360 in VVM instead of R7 250.

You have to enable analog_0 VGA. First disable emulation on the other ones you has enabled.

Ok I’ve done that, my PC monitor does what it should do by displaying an out of range message confirming that windows is out putting at 15hz however my arcade screen is still displaying the image the same as before. The only way it’s currently displaying normal’ish display is if I go into my PC’s safe mode options and select that it boots in 640 x 480 which is odd because the resolution is obviously the same as CRT Emudriver puts it in anyway.

Actually after rebooting windows it seems to be displaying ok, although the picture is a bit squashed.

Now I just need to get Groovy Mame sorted.

Oh maybe not.

Guys, the arcade monitor I have is 19” Tutung Type 58 which is out of a Megatouch. Should I be selecting the Hi Res Arcade option instead of Arcade 15hz?

Ok, so I’ve set it up as hi res arcade and the display is good but when I’m runnning Groovymame the resolution doesn’t change.

I have been reading Calamity's guides and I will post log files later (busy with the kids at the moment). Am I right though in thinking that with it being a 31hz monitor, it won’t be able to do lower resolutions than 640 by 480 though?

  • Is running at 15kHz
Re: Is the Radeon R7 250 compatible with CRT Emudriver?
« Reply #18 on: October 28, 2018, 06:26:24 pm »
Horizontal Scan Rate = (Total Vertical Lines per Frame) x (Frames per second)

31kHz = (480 visible lines + 45 blanking lines) x 60Hz

so the following is also true:

31kHz = (576 + 44) x 50Hz

A 15Khz CRT will go from about 50-65Hz and same for a 31kHz arcade CRT, i believe. (A PC monitor is often a bit more flexible, and will probably sync anywhere from 31kHz up to its horizontal scan limit (google for the specs) at anywhere from 40-160Hz, as long as the equation balances. You can also look into something like 120Hz 240p (or 100Hz 256p))

EDIT: oops, section removed as that's not a PC monitor you have :) The only problem with the above might be that some old arcade monitors can be sensitive. Keep it on spec if you can.

Cool thanks for all the info and help guys! Got it running at 31hz and it’s looking good. Tempted to buy a 15hz monitor now though if I can find one at a good price.

Ha sorry about that. One more little problem I’m having is running my front end which is HyperSpin. I read that there are problems with it when running in 31kHz and I’ve checked VMMaker is set to use super resolutions. Now the strange thing is, if I go into VMMaker then try running HyperSpin it works fine. But HyperSpin will not run on a fresh pc boot up. Any ideas?
