A few games to watch out for...
« on: October 24, 2018, 01:54:58 pm »
Rise: Race the future

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/rise-race-the-future-is-a-new-arcade-racer-coming-to-steam-on-october-26th/

Apparently its coming out this Friday the 26th, so that's cool.

Xenon Racer

https://store.steampowered.com/app/899390/Xenon_Racer/

Looks really interesting.

Gral

https://store.steampowered.com/app/718020/GRAL/

Looks like its going for the PS1/2 combat racer thing, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Zerocar: Future motorsport

https://store.steampowered.com/app/790080/ZEROCAR_Future_Motorsport/

Already in early access, looking forward to trying this one. Looks very similar to Xenon Racer

Super Pilot

https://store.steampowered.com/app/648050/Super_Pilot/

Play this a while back in an early version, its an F-zero clone and when I played it it felt very much like F-zero GX. Which was great. The game is focused on making your own tracks. Could be a good or bad thing...

Thanks for this dude. It's always good to hear about these smaller titles that could so easily slip under my radar. On the subject of future releases, is anyone else as disappointed as I am that the new Team Sonic Racing game has ditched the All Star connection (i.e all the old Sega IPs that featured in the previous games as characters, tracks and homages, like OutRun, After Burner, House of the Dead, Shinobi, Golden Axe and Panzer Dragoon) in favour of concentrating solely on Sonic and the various non-entities that make up all his chums? What a load of bollocks. On top of this, it sounds like the game has some kind of new enforced wanky teamwork mechanic added. Definitely shall be giving that one a miss.

So a mix of Chaotix and Double Dash?

"The game differs from traditional kart racers because of its focus on cooperative gameplay: the player is part of a team of racers and they must work together. While they control a single racer, the player must pay attention to how teammates are performing and share power-ups."

Yeah I agree, ditching the Sega stuff was bad enough but then making it co-op focused is just weird. I think they might be going for a younger audience, since the sonic cartoons are still a thing. I guess I'll reserve judgement until I get to play it. If the co-op is good it might be something I play with my wife.

Looks interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about the graphical style they've gone for though, looks a bit PS1-ish.

I bought 4 of the futuristic racers last night from Steam, here's my quick thoughts:

Antigravitator
https://store.steampowered.com/app/621020/Antigraviator/
Not a million miles different from other racers like RedOut or WipeOut, but fairly easy to drive and speedy. Nice looking for a Unity title.

Racing Glider
https://store.steampowered.com/app/644010/Racing_Glider/
Something different here, a rally racing game in effect, trying to complete off-road tracks as fast as possible. Early days though, with slower gameplay (initially) and heavy-ish handling.

GRAL
https://store.steampowered.com/app/718020/GRAL/
Oh man, this wants to be Dethkarz crossed with RollCage and games of that ilk. I found it very jerky frame rate if reflections are enabled, otherwise it's a bit lightweight and you fall off/through the track a bit too often. It's early access too, though.

ZeroCar: Future Motorsport
https://store.steampowered.com/app/790080/ZEROCAR_Future_Motorsport/
This one seems good, a time trial drifting game with enormously long tracks. Massive crashes are a bit too easy to happen though!

The next ones I think I might get are (some are out, some not yet):
https://store.steampowered.com/app/955580/Rise_Race_The_Future/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/818140/Stay_Safe/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/674170/DriftForce/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/621970/Trailblazers/

Although there's SO MANY futuristic racing games being dumped out (many asset swap approaches too, so pure junk), that I think I'm going to stick to good ones!

It's gotten to the point where every new futuristic race game is just a copy of an old classic game so best to just stick with the originals as they're usually always the best examples of the genre! :)

It's true. I was getting quite interested in the progress of that Formula Fusion game that was being made by ex WipEout devs a year or two back, until it was announced that WipEout Omega Collection was coming to PS4 and I'd actually be able to play WipEout 2048 on the PS4, at which point I just lost all interest.

Looks like a third (fourth?) in the Doujin Future GPX Cyber Formula SIN series is on the way... to Steam!

The previous 2 (or so) games were exclusive to Japan, featuring shape-shifting crazy designed racing cars with different handling modes (think MegaRace 3 if you've played that).

https://store.steampowered.com/app/964230/FUTURE_GPX_CYBER_FORMULA_SIN_VIER/

More here; it seems more of an evolution of the previous game: http://www.project-ynp.com/product/cf4/en/index.html

This is the series:

1: http://www.project-ynp.com/product/cgpx110/productCgpx110.html
2: http://www.project-ynp.com/product/cgpx200/productCgpx200.html
2 boost pack add-on: http://www.project-ynp.com/product/cgpx210/productCgpx210.html
3: http://www.project-ynp.com/product/cf/index.html (was released as DREI then upgraded to DREI PLUS)
4: http://www.project-ynp.com/product/cf4/en/index.html

The earlier games can be found in various official and unofficial placed online!

@VirtuaIceMan - Hope you're putting together another seasonal racing game quiz my friend? It wouldn't be Christmas without it!

Please post a link so we all know where to find it if you decide to do another one :)

Haha not this year; I'm struggling to try to find time for my F1 games on YouTube channel. Then there will be rally games, futurstic racing games, Sega games, etc, etc.

Despite mentioning it ages ago, DriftForce has finally just released. It seems (from videos alone) to be a procedurally generated cross between F-Zero, Thumper and some sort of drifting game! https://store.steampowered.com/app/674170/DriftForce/

Looks nice! Big bold Tron-style graphics and a solid looking 60fps.
