Easy way to edit Mame.lst file in Maximus 2.10?
« on: October 19, 2018, 11:18:33 pm »
Is there a program that I can use to easily edit the mame.lst file in Maximus Arcade 2.10?  If you do a rescan of roms it creates a new mame.lst file which includes the ROM files in the list of games when you run MA.  I keep having to edit and remove the ROM files from the list of games every time I rescan.

Or, is there a way to tell MA NOT to include the ROM files in the game list?

how often are you rescanning? and why?

what i usually do is delete the.lst file before i rescan. Although i have narrowed my mamelist to about 1100 games and dont plan to add.

I think what you're indicating is either:
A) you have more actual MAME games (zip files) than you want displayed in Maximus.
or B) Maximus is showing all possible MAME games out there, whether you have them or not.

To 'edit' MAME.lst in Maximus, open Preferences, go to "Game Lists" tab. Under sub-tab "Game Lists", select MAME under "Configuration for:".  From there delete the ones you don't want to show in Maximus.

Once you get your MAME.lst file to your liking, make a copy of it for backup.
Then also, don't re-scan.

Yeah Maximus is showing the games+the rom files every time I rescan so I keep having to edit the game lists and remove the rom files from the list. I really shouldn't keep editing and removing the rom files from the list until I am done with everything but I have kids playing inbetween adding and they keep clicking on the ROM files as if they were games to play LOL.

In Preferences, check your Mame configuration, Scan tab.  Is only
Code: [Select]
.zip listed there?  Or is it something like
Code: [Select]
.zip, .binShould only have   .zip

If it is only   .zip   , then you probably have some non-playable games that just need to be deleted from the folder.

Sorry, I didn't state clearly what I was asking.  The BIOS files like NAMCO50, NAMCO51, stvbios, etc. is what I keep having to remove from the games list.

OK. I understand now. But now I'm wondering why the bios files are even being listed.
(this is kinda bugging me, and I'm bound and determined to figure this out. Or have someone else tell us)  ;D

I believe Maximus Arcade (MA) get it's list (.lst file) from: executing mame64.exe -listxml, then comparing that with the roms folder to get the available games and their 'proper' names. So it shouldn't 'show' the bios files on the list.

Maybe... (as a thought)
In MA Preferences, Options, MAME
...check "Disable unplayable roms.."
(I really don't know. Just reaching....)

What emulator are you using to run the MAME games? I assume mame64.
Is your mame64.exe compatible with (the same version as) your roms?
(not sure how much difference these would make for this issue)

If worse comes to worse and MA does not cooperate (though it should), I found another (multi-step) way of creating a mame.lst file of your games without having to go through and delete individual roms/bios/games... off the list.
(Run mame to generate an xml of your [working] games. Run [something like] LightSpeed to convert it to a 'special' MA-type txt file. Then run Game List Converter to convert that to a MA .lst file.)

Drive-by answer:

Set up your mame.ini to use two rom directories, like
rompath       c:\mame\roms;c:\mame\noshow

Move the bios files to noshow. They'll still be available to MAME, but Maximus won't see them when you scan the roms directory.

Good luck.

Holy guacamole!  I figured it had to be something simple.  Didn't think it would be that simple.

Thanks nexusmtz!

Still a little perplexed though that MA is grabbing the bios files as games.
Based on the thought that it needs the mame created xml file to [at minimum] get a games' name.
i.e. Donkey Kong vs. dkong
...and mame knowing that namco50 is not a game.

Regardless, gotta love a good [Homer Simpson - forehead slap] "doh!" solution!! ;D

I still need to try this but the hard part is sorting through the roms folder to pull out the BIOS files. heh.
