Games which take pictures
« on: October 02, 2018, 10:45:57 am »
Hi there,

I am looking for games which take pictues from the players. For example the Mario Kart Arcade Series does this.
Who can name a few? This topic seems to be very hard to google…

On a sidenote, does MAME support this feature somehow?

MAME doesn't support the feature.

I'm assuming you don't want a list of the various 'Print Club' games, because that was the entire idea of them?

Portraits is one of the earliest examples of a game doing this, although it's not properly emulated right now.

Midway Skins Game did it too back in the 90s, one of the interesting things is that the common HDD dumps you can find it appear to be full of stored photos used by the high score tables since the machines those dumps came from had been used in the wild at one point and it doesn't look like the data can be entirely wiped.

Is it as bad as the theme and the overall look imply?  Because that game looks terrible.

Its one of the most praised pins on pinside, I thought it was boring as ---fudgesicle---. I really liked GotG and Iron Maiden, I played them at Pinfest in Allentown.

On topic MAME doesn't support it; and most of the game that support it are racing games. I think the latest Daytona supports it too.

I thought it was a fun game.  The selfie at the end when I got a high score freaked me out tho.

I've glanced at pinside a few times over the years, and it appears to be the same crew that ground RGP down into dust have taken up new residence.  Used to be very surreal watching that newsgroup suddenly talk up a lousy game and drive the price up.  Whitewater is a terrible game but holy hell did that price explode.

Sounds like that MetalJesusRocks guy on YouTube and his "hidden gems".

Coincidentally many of his associates have used game stores.

I've found a fair few of his 'Hidden Gems' to actually be a lot of fun, I think you're just reading into it too much because a fair few of them are a bit expensive at times.

eg. for the PS3 lists, the majority of them I'd consider among the most enjoyable games on the platform, aside from Yakuza 4, which I didn't really think was that good, or that hidden.

Awe man... It won game of the year! It is designed by one of the best minds in pinball (Pat Lawlor). It has great shots... just a lame theme.

ha ha ha... I gotcha. Houdini and TNA are amazing machines. Houdini especially considering they had to start from scratch and rush the design process. Great game!

Haven't gotten to play TNA.  Local collector got it and had a party, and two ---meecrobs--- decided that the best way to spend their evening was to park on it.  Looked dumb, though.

It's innovation is very subtle. No real toys or ramps. But once you learn the game it is incredibly intense and deep. Plus it easily has the best sound and light show of any pinball machine.

The looks of it reminded me a lot of the Gottlieb 'street level' games.  Not necessarily a bad thing.

Right, it's made by Spooky pinball. But the designer Scott Danesi was just a homebrew guy. Designed this game, cut the white wood and just thought it would be a fun thing for his friends and him to play. Well they had so much fun they took it to shows and Spooky and Stern both wanted to mass produce it. He chose Spooky. I assume it was because going with the smaller manufacturer it would be easier to release the game you wanted to release, and it wouldn't take much to make a hit. Which I believe to this day is the best selling game Spooky has made.  Scott now is working on game number 2, which is rumored to be Stranger Things, but that rumor has just been shot down.

Imagine being a goth/industrial music fan and not liking NIN or Rob Zombie all that much.  But hey, I still enjoyed that game.  I'm kind of surprised they're digging in so deep with the 35-55 age crowd with these themes, though.  Guess we have all the money.

Yeah both designed by Charlie the owner of Spooky. He also has Alice Cooper on the line as we speak. As far as looks goes it's up there with the best. How it shoots, I have no idea. Never played Americas most Haunted, but there are crazy stories about the electronics in that game. Anyway it was a hack job. No wonder the game sucked.

$7k for a new in box pin.... it's serious. Jersey Jack pushes the $10k all the way up to Limited Edition Machines for $12,500.00! Crazy! Rich people will pay it though. Not I.

I'll gladly admit that Rob Zombie is to heavy metal what McDonald's is to fine dining.....I totally dig that one song he's been releasing over the past 20 years, but come on, his songs are better than anything in the industrial/goth genres simply because they aren't in the industrial/goth genres.  Next you'll be telling me that you don't like Johnny Cash or something. ;)  I think pins are just too expensive for their own good these days.  Eventually our generation is going to get elderly and the younger generations aren't going to be willing to fork over that much dough for a single game with no nostalgic connections.

I played TNA a few times at ZapCon. I don’t know if I liked it or not.

Houdini is fun - probably the best intentional use of LED lighting I’ve ever seen.

I'd like to play Houdini.

Rob Zombie is always in the 90s industrial music conversation. Johnny Cash is fine but I feel like no one under 60 liked him until that movie came out.

He became cool shortly before his death when he covered Nine Inch Nails. Suddenly Hot Topic started selling tshirts of him giving the middle finger and it became edgy and hip to like the same music your grandfather did.

I have been playing a ton of Pinball... My currant top 5 pins I love

Iron Maiden
Houdini
TNA
Star Trek
Attack from Mars Remake

Game of Thrones despite the terrible artwork is a fun game to shoot.
I wish I could play more Lord of the Rings, that game seems amazing.

I played the new Jersey Jack Pirates of the Caribbean, but it was set up for $2 a play. Too much for me to play a lot of games.

I also thought Deadpool pin is way overrated.

if you want to play a lot of pins, go to a pin show. I went to Pinfest it was like $20 to get in, but I played like 60 different pins, many multiple times. I'd skip games with long lines and play a bunch of other games with no lines. That's where I played Guardians , which is a great pin but even super used are still over 4 grand.

I go to the Midwest Gaming Classic every year. Tons of pins there.

Ian lives about an hour from me. It would be nice to know of a local place that has a bunch of pins. The arcade near me has probably 100 classic arcade games, but only a few pins.

I remember watching Hee-Haw on Sundays back in the 80s I think. We only got 3 channels back then and there was nothing else to do.

Hey, Ian. Where are you playing all of those pins?

Mike go to

Find your city and type in a specific game or just click whats near you!

Around me there is a full on Arcade called The Garcade, and we just got an Up Down barcade which has about 20 pins. There are also a lot of hipster corner bars around me that usually have a nice rotation. Check out the Black Bird in Bayview.
