Average speed difference between HD6450 and HD7950?
« on: September 30, 2018, 11:35:26 pm »
I've been using an HD6450 for a while now but I recently acquired an HD7950 in hopes of playing some more modern games on my groovymame PC.

I've noticed that no matter what game I play on the HD7950, it's always 99.99% speed, no matter the frame delay settings. I can usually get 100% average speed on the HD6450.

I know .01 percent is OCD territory but I thought it was strange that a much more powerful card would have this "issue."  I used the catalyst 12.6 based drivers for the HD6450 and Crimson for GCN based drivers for the HD7950. The 7950 doesn't have a VGA port so I used a DVI to VGA adapter. I doubt that has anything to do with it but figured it's worth mention.

I see differences between your logs with regards to sound devices and the number of video modes.
Also, it looks like maybe you didn't pick the same monitor preset when you installed the drivers.  I'm not sure.

Try diffing the files against each other with a tool like BeyondCompare and you'll see what I mean.

You're right. I thought I used the same preset but maybe not. I'll have to reinstall the 7950 soon to re-test with the same monitor preset and sound output.

I reinstalled the 7950 and  tried several different games and settings. no frame delay, frame delay, dsound, portaudio, no sound, and no matter what, each game I've played shows 99.99%. Very strange. Maybe the 7950 handles the timings differently or something.

Probably there's a slight pixel clock difference between both cards. I'd consider 99.99% as perfect.
