Boards on the Floor: RIP
« on: September 15, 2018, 02:30:41 pm »
Opened a dart hall. The walls are corrugated sheet metal. Needed to mount some steel tip boards. Ready-made stands cost too damn much for what you get. So BYO!

Step 1: Sketchup.

Step B: Cut some wood.

Step "time to stop counting": Paint said wood. I like Rustoleum's oil based Semi-gloss Black.

Time to start putting the pieces together. The frame is just 2x4s. The back board is 1/2" particle board wrapped in black felt, and secured to the frame with wood screws and finish washers (these little guys rock).

One mostly done.

Multiplied by a factor of four...

Added some of the scrap 1/2" plywood on the backs of the bases to keep the stands up against the crests of the sheet metal ridges. Also added some support braces to the bases.

Lowe's has the best cost effective solution I've found for dartboard lighting. These clip-on LED lamps work great.

The soft tip boards also got an upgrade to international color segments during this time...

A good friend of mine has a 48" printer that I put to good use for banners 'n ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---...

Here you can see the carpet oche for the soft tip boards. The distance from the oche to board surface for steel tip is 2 3/4" closer, hence the sticker oches on the floor for the steel tip boards. These stickers drove me nuts during the short time they were installed. I had to come up with another solution...

Finally! A decent use for LED T-molding!

But how? Internationally, raised oches are the norm for steel tip. But I didn't want to build bulky boxes. 3/4" particle board will work...

Four raised oches cut to width...

Then I cut them to length. All cuts were made with a router and flush trim bit. Cut the t-molding slots on the front edges. Ran wiring harnesses down the sides. Wrapped em up in carpet (was on sale at Menards for 27 cents a sq ft). And installed the t-molding.

While waiting on the slow boat from China, I threw some scrap LED strips in to see the effect...

The RGB strips and controllers showed up... But they failed to send me the power supplies I ordered...

Installed RGB LED strips on the backs of the stands. Secured the strips with hot glue (that 3M adhesive sucks).

Some soldering occurred...

Fancy...

Sourced some power supplies state side...

And BEHOLD! Boards on the floor!

Shoot well!

So I'm contemplating hanging a dartboard outside now that it's not 105 degree everyday.  Original idea had been to strip down an Arachnid softtip machine to just the dartboard and hang it, but my wife wants steel tip.  Which ---smurfs--- up everything.

So, any thoughts on a steel tip board that can reasonably survive the elements?  Seems like everyone has the same $20 board.

It'll be underneath an overhand, so shouldn't get any direct rain but it's humid 24/7 here.  Maybe I just replace it every few months.

I also spent a lot of time at Lowe's (a lot of time) looking at ideas for backing.  Magically, every single machine they had in house to cut anything was broken, and my little fart box can't fit a 4x8 sheet of anything into it.  I looked at cork tiles but it would take a bunch of them (I'm covering 20 square feet).  Today I'm thinking about "garage foam board insulation" which is about $10 a sheet and I can cut it in the parking lot to cram it into my Toyota.  I could cover it with felt.... or just paint it black.

Just rambling here, I guess, but this thread got me wanting a dart's setup again.

I've used 3 different boards for leagues so far. The Unicorn Eclipse HD2s DO NOT hold up well. The wire backs out of the board over time.

So far these have held up extremely well in a bar environment: Viper Razorback

I also picked up a couple of Winmau Blade 5s for the dart hall. Very impressed with those so far, but not sure how they'd fair outside. I'll see if I'm still impressed with them after a season of leagues has been played.

Made some lamps.

Painted them Rustoleum Hammered Black.

Mounted to tables.

Wired lamp.

Ran outlet/usb charger and lamp wire through table leg.

Foot is hollow...

---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- image, but spliced lamp and outlet wires at a 3 pin molex connecter. Did the same to one end of a 12' flat extension cord.

Now each table has a charging station and overhead lighting. No more fluorescent lighting!

Here you go Jim... A couple quick and dirty shots of the "game room" portion of the dart hall. Nothing fancy. Skeeball and Strata Bowling are the big earners in this corner.

After 3 months of heavy league use, the carpeted raised oches developed some "bubbles". I unwrapped them all, put down a bunch of carpet tape and re-wrapped them. No more bubbles and the carpet is nice n' tight for the new league season. Took about 20 mins per oche.

It's come a really long way. I guess since my last update I've also built a riser podium for my desk, added stow-a-way tables to the back wall for snacks n crock pots n ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, and some more LED accent lighting. Really wanting to expand into the unit behind me with another 6 boards. We'll see what 2019 brings!

Nice place you created!

I started playing darts right around the same time I started the design/build of my cabinet.

Here is my cabinet - which would never be used in a setting like yours.

https://bperkins.wordpress.com/2018/01/28/lakeside-arcade-dart-cabinet/

Which is part of the reason my cabinet is named 'Lakeside Arcade'  the game and dart cabinet in the same corner :)

Great work again - thanks for posting these.

After months of use, they're getting a little worn. T-molding getting kicked out had become a common occurrence. So, time to upgrade!

Pics showing the carpet wearing on the corners...

I always hated seeing corner protectors on cabs... But they're exactly what I needed to keep the t-molding in place and carpet from wearing further.

Test fit...

I dig it.

Sold Johnny Mnemonic to fund most of a "mini expansion". Two more Radikal boards, some tables & chairs, room dividing curtains, couple of lights, some carpet work, and rearranging of the arcade games. I'm almost to a point of being happy with it all.

I have a 55" next to my desk/customer service counter. When there are no tournaments I run a slideshow of event flyers, various logos, and champion pics. During tournaments it displays the brackets (also found on each dartboard, but the big screen is easier for spectators and players with poor eye sight). During foosball season, it fulfills a third purpose. If I get to a point of ridiculous revenue, I may add some big screens above the boards... But I'm a cheap bastard.

What to do with the ugly pipes?

Drink holders! The classic kind... Like tables... Or shelves... Yeah, drink shelves!
Not sure many of you would remember my game room back in the day, but I had an old mantle-turned-drink shelf in there, and it was awesome.
So the plan was to make something similar for this wall...

Basic form cut...

Forty-fived a corner and fancied up the edges...

Black Cherry...

Rattle can triple thick...

This sucker is held up with 3 1/4-20 bolts and t-nuts. Pretty ---smurfin---' stout.

Had some parts left over, so I made a second one. Found a break in the "blizzard" to route the edges OUTSIDE...

Held up the same way as the last one, 3 bolts and t-nuts...

Jigsaw work was done inside...

Same stain and semi-gloss polyurethane...

A couple of handsome drink shelves at...

One Champion (picture plaques) and one MVP for each ADA League I've ran so far.

I think you are WAY more creative than me..  I just follow directions well  :)

But a laser would be sooo fun to try to do things with..  The Mrs. on the other hand would have me lasering everything..
My next assignment is to 'distress' wood for multiple mirror frames.. So maybe its good I don't have one..   :P

You should see the freakin' ideas Arroyo has. They are brilliantly nuts. I swear. I didn't realize what a big deal it is to sit in the same room with a like minded arcade guy and just blurt out ideas between drinking, playing games, and fixing them.

Yea - I like the CP work on his machine.  Looking forward to it getting to that stage..
Makes me want to try something with lights and plexi, etc..  Sounds like a fun visit!

Now fixing things - I can do that - I pretty much can fix anything that's broken - if its fixable.

I like the work of the creator of this thread too :)  I started playing darts a little over a year ago..  Great setup..

I did the kids trophies they are holding in the photo on the right.

Notice the evolution of the plaques.

The one on the left has a roman ogee routed border on the sides only. I was using my router table and I kept destroying the top part of the frame when I tried routing with the ogee bit.

I was using a pattern bushing and a template to create the window and the rabbeted pocket that the acrylic, photo, and backing cardboard sat in. Picture frame tabs hold it all in place.

Two strong magnets hold the plaque to the wall.

The one on the right was done with my CNC machine. I cut the oak board to size with my chop saw. I run the borders on my router table with the ogee bit. Then I clamp it to my CNC machine to cut out the window and the pocket.

You will also notice the laser work is better on the 2019. I had just replaced the 60 watt laser tube.

This is a fun ongoing collaboration. Nephasth has been tweaking the graphic files he sends to me. He comes up with great ideas like using magnets to mount the plaques. Above all he has been patient with me as I continue to streamline and improve my process.

One of these days I am going to get drunk at the Oche.

Those are amazing. Love how they are dart holders. Beats my homemade dart holder by a long shot. Lucky kids!

Mike - What I love watching your CDC work. Really nice oak you are cutting as well. (I still love my plaque I have hanging up.) I have a homemade CNC, thinking of upgrading it. Just picked a commercial kitchen cabinet out of a dumpster, and now have a better surface to house my CNC.

What are your works area dimensions? That seems to be a roadblock I keep hitting, and don't know what a best answer is other than "Bigger"
Does the laser swap with a router as needed?

My CNC router work area is 24 inches wide, by 12 inches deep, by 3 inches of height. Give or take on the height depending on the bit.
I can pass the work piece through the 12 inch side so it is really 24 x however long you need.

The laser is a completely separate machine. It is a 60 watt CO2 laser.

classicarcadecabinets.com has a file but it is not known how accurate it is.

I would like to know more about football darts

It's a fun game! I try to throw a FootballDarts Tournament about once a month to mix things up. Very challenging, as the scoring areas are rather small and you have to weigh risk/reward when choosing passing or running plays. People who love football enjoy this game. Hell, I hate football, but have a blast playing FootballDarts. You can read more about how to play on Footballdarts.com. However, boards are pricey at $110 a piece, which is why I bought Amazon out of their stock when I saw them at $5 shipped each about a month ago.

Haven't been around these parts much lately... Hope all is well!

The dart hall has been open for nearly 3 years now! It's been growing and evolving constantly along the way. All of the arcade machines have been sold and more dart machines have been brought in. Currently there are 7 Radikal boards, 2 Phoenix boards, and 4 steel tip boards.

Lots has happened to the steel tip set ups since my last post. They got upgraded from 8" tablets to PCs with 21" touchscreen monitors (thanks Rodney). I even built 360 degree lighting boxes to eliminate shadows. However, as much as I try to get people interested in steel tip, it's declining in popularity and soft tip is increasing.

This past spring season was the busiest I've had yet, and actually had to turn teams away for some leagues being at capacity. It's time to make room for more soft tip machines. The steel tip board stands and raised oches are going away. I still want to offer steel tip leagues though, so I had to come up with a solution.

Now, some quick dart specifications... The throwline distance from the face of a soft tip board is 8'. The throwline distance from the face of a steel tip board is 7' 9 1/4". The thickness of a Winmau Blade 5 steel tip dartboard is 2" from the face of the board to the backboard or wall it's mounted to. That leaves me 3/4"... PERFECT!

One thing I hate the most about any project I find myself doing down here is... I have to replicate everything I do multiple times.

I picked up a couple 2'x4' 3/4" particle board "handi-panels" and some hardware. Used a jigsaw to cutout my first backboard, and a router to copy the original 3 more times... Burned up my first router bit bearing in the process. Had some metal tubing laying around that worked out perfect for spacers. And used some flat strap brackets to grip the backboard to the soft tip machine.

Used my favorite paint, Rustoleum oil based semi gloss black, to pretty them up. And installed the board mounting hardware on the backboards. The result was better than I expected. I didn't think the existing soft tip lighting would light up the steel tip boards, but they do! However, I have plans for additional lighting for these.

A close up of the mounting system. This allows me to slip the steel tip board and backboard right over the soft tip board without any tools, quickly.

So... This whole assembly puts the face of the steel tip board exactly 2 3/4" in front of the face of the soft tip board, which allows me to use the same throw line for both soft and steel tip, negating the need for the raised oches I built years ago.

"Progress"

I never stumbled on this thread before.  Nice place.  I used to love darts and got pretty good but that was 30 years ago.  Played on teams at local bars and did a lot of open tournaments.  Played with and against some top ranked players back then.  I don't recognize all that electronic setup we just had cricket chalkboards to keep score...lol.  I'm definitely in the steel tip camp.  Maybe the machines are better these days but back then I hated soft tip.

I used to like the cheap 2x4 frame setups they built for the tournaments.  You just slide your foot up till it hits the wood and there's no question about anyone sneaking over the line.

Nice work.

Thanks man! I really appreciate the time you put into the plaques, and the players absolutely love them!

The only plus about Brother Neph selling off his games is that it means he has to come out to ZapCon to get his fix!

Haven't played an arcade game since the last Zapcon! Don't have the itch, but I always look forward to a trip to AZ during Zapcon!

It’s like grandmas couch slip covers that only come off when company visits... except they don’t come off even then.

Well, about the exact opposite. These slip on 2 nights a week for steel tip leagues. They're stored out of sight the other 70% of the time.

I used to like the cheap 2x4 frame setups they built for the tournaments.  You just slide your foot up till it hits the wood and there's no question about anyone sneaking over the line.

I prefer a raised oche. These were really fun, maybe some day I'll have room again for dedicated steel tip lanes.

Oh snap, Neph's back! Looks great bro

Thanks again, guys! It's been an interesting journey getting this far. Held a day job for the past couple years to help keep it alive, but fortunately I was able to quit my slave-gig back in April. This and a couple side hustles keeps the bills paid and me entertained.

Nicely done.  Sorry I missed out on this thread all this time.
Your place looks like an excellent spot to hang out.

Not sure where you are yet (I will look here shortly) but sadly I am sure it requires a plane ticket for me.
Maybe some day though!

Stoked for you that you can choose how to make your way in the world.

THAT effort is an excellent way to pay the bills.
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools! I can fix it.

Boards on the Floor are officially no more!

Here's a shot of the last two steel tip stands that were set up.

After getting rid of the last two steel tip stands, I did some re-arranging and brought the Phoenix boards over to the main wall. Without the back lighting of the steel tip stands, the main wall seemed very dark. So I also added some LED strips to the backs of four of the Radikal boards on the main wall.

Here's the main wall in default mode (all soft tip):

And here's the main wall set up for steel tip league nights:

This easy project served the dart hall well for three years!

If you happen to play darts, and own a GranBoard, I'm currently offering online home leagues through my ADA Area. Hit me up if you're serious, we're always looking for more players!

Was playing steel tip in my buddies barn (steel out building like yours) over the holiday weekend.
then after a few more beers the throwing knives came out.
we decided that wasn't safe so we switched to bow and arrow.
yeah even worse.
out came the sling shot.

anyhoo, place looks cool.

have you thought about an awning on the side of the building for throwing knives?

Hard pass on that. Knives N Booze... Hmm...

I get asked all the time about axe throwing lanes and/or leagues. Consumable supplies and constant upkeep will keep me out of that game, too much work.

However, I have been planting the seeds to start a mini-crossbow league. Just got to get enough people to buy more junk...

No, it doesn't seem smart... But man... It's ---smurfing--- cool!

Shoot some recurve archery myself here with friends of like mind and we have joked for years about getting crossbows.

And so last month my buddy Dennis finally bought one, which has a very cool integrated cocking lever arm (I'll have to ask him what the brand is again-) and I ran a few bolts through it last time he was up here at the ranch.

It feels more dangerous than any weapon I have used.

And NOT in a good way.

Those things have the scent of unintended consequences all over them.

I'll stick with steel tip darts and recurves!

Beautiful work on the dart hall and I love the elegant solution for keeping old sisal boards in the mix there too

Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools! I can fix it.
