27" control panel large enough for 2 players + trackball
« on: September 06, 2018, 09:27:18 pm »
For my next stupid question....

My CP is going to be 27" and have 2 players  with servo sticks and probably 8 buttons each player and a Utrack trackball.
I roughly layed it out in sketchup with like 3.5" on either side of the trackball and it seems really tight.
Do you think I'm going to have enough room on my cp or is it going to be to cramped?

Thanks

Use a 2.5" trackball (if you must) and ditch 2 buttons per player.

The x-arcade tankstick is just over 27" wide at the sticks and it feels comfortable with two players, the right edge of the trackball is about 4" from the player two stick, no real issues.

Of course the buttons are not two rows of four if that's what you are aiming for.

Best of luck,

Those joysticks have a much different "footprint" underneath the CP than the servostiks.  The servostiks need extra room.

Excellent point.  ;)

It will fit fine, provided you use all your panel width (don't put 3" of dead space between the left side and the joystick base) and put buttons 7 and 8 above the Street Fighter 3x2 layout. The only thing they are useful for anyway is select and start on Snes.

Definitely wanting a 2x4 layout for modern fighters.I know the newer MKs use 8 buttons.
I know the controls will physically fit. I'm mainly just worried about fitting my left hand on the left joystick.

Probably need to just order my controls and start testing. CP is going to determine the width of my cabinet.

Lol yea I meant 2x4.
I originally was planning a 3 over 4 layout.

But someone mentioned having that 8th button opens up all the modern fighters on Steam.

Was just laying some things out from print outs on slag coin.
I can totally fit everything in 27", just worried about hitting the player 2 joystick when playing golden tee or some of the bowling games. Also worried about having enough space to rest my stick hand with the player one joystick.

Thinking about going to a 28" or 29" cp or maybe just ditching the trackball all together as a last resort.

Cardboard it. And try.

When designing my panel I decided to ditch my (already bought) trackball, because of the space for the servo-stiks and mainly the room for P1's left hand and P2's right (I have upright edges on both sides - Galaga style). Still thinking of a way to include the trackball in some modular way though...

Arcade games are not pc games, you generally do not rest your stick hand.

You would be more likely to slap a joystick in Crystal Castles then you ever would in Golden Tee or Bowling.

YOU may not rest your stick hand but I surely do and always have. I'm imagining your white knuckled death grip, hovering in the air on top of the stick while frantically flicking your wrist around to move the stick...
3 finger grip with the left side of my palm resting on the CP. All just gentle finger motion to move the stick.

I put 2 Servosticks + 3" Trackball (Spintrak) into a 24" control panel.

It is tight, but it is possible.

Hmmm, aren't those sides annoying when playing? That was for me the reason I ditched the trackball...
