Author Topic: Windows 10 Guide? / Monitor not in sync with emudrivers?  (Read 4095 times)

This thread is a 2 question post.

1. I feel like I'm not wrapping my head around Groovymame and all of it's side programs properly, CRT Emudrivers, VMmaker, Arcade OSD etc. Does there exist a guide somewhere, preferably video, for Windows 10 and the most recent Groovymame version and it's side programs? Every guide I can find is out of date or specific on Windows XP or 7 features and sometimes also on older versions of VMmaker, Emudrivers etc. The few "go to guides" people recommend are irreverent at this point when using more modern hardware and software and the only video tutorial I can find is also out of date at this point too. I'm really after a in-depth guide which skips nothing from start to finish.

2. With that said, I MAY have it setup somewhat correctly, but maybe not either since it's not working 100%. I installed the emudrivers, the software says it was successful. I install the video modes (24 to be exact) with VMmaker which that says was successful. I can change my desktop now to a bunch of really obscure resolutions but none of them my arcade monitor, Nanao MS9, likes. (I read somewhere that 640 x 480 should be safe but that was out of sync too) No matter what it's out of sync. I once managed to get it to display Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi in 15khz whilst dual monitoring off a LCD screen with the Nanao MS9. I don't know how I got it going exactly, and because most games the Switchres was changing to what were very incorrect resolutions I tried to play around with it to get everything working but I seemed to break Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi and the other handful of games that actually worked. Now Switchres triggers what seems to be almost random resolutions. For the most part their double the res of what it should be. I assume that Switchres is changing to odd incorrect resolutions because I'm dual monitoring, but given that the arcade monitor won't sync I got no choice.

Hopefully this wasn't too wordy.  ???

My setup is as followed:
Windows 10 64bit Home Editon
Groovymame 0.200 installed on top of Mame 0.200
Video game is a Radeon 2250. Using the DMS-59 port with the DMS-59 -> 2 Male VGA cable.
Arcade connected through JPAC. Sega New Astro City -> Windows 10 PC

Sorry I planned on it and I will... I just typed this up at work where I don't have access to my equipment. I was hoping someone would have an answer without needing a log but I will provide it when I get home in 7ish hours.  :laugh:

1) Frankly, I'm shocked that card works at all with Windows 10.  I'm pretty sure ATI never supported that GPU on Windows 10 at all.

2) GroovyMAME now comes with a complete distribution package.  You don't need to install it over standard baseline MAME.

3) I think the reason you're having installation problems is because you're using an ancient video card and old CRT Emudriver.  The recommended configuration these days is a Radeon HD 5000 or newer for Windows 7/10 along with CRT Emudriver 2.0...  http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=295

Note that the Radeon HD 5000 series was first available in 2009 so it's nearly 10 years old.  The card you have is even older, from around 2005.

I'll see if I can source a 5000 on the cheap. The gentleman who sold me the New Astro City just gave me 2 of the 2250's for nothing (he literally had a bucket full of them) when I told him all I had left to buy for my project.

I mean, that card *might* work on Windows 10 but most of the documentation and discussion on this site is aimed at CRT Emudriver 2.0 and a Radeon HD 5000 or higher so it's likely to be a struggle.

There's actually quite a few desktop card choices with CRT Emudriver 2.0...

Okay dokey! I'm only 24 hours late on my promise of logs... sorry I forgot to steal works VGA cable to hook the computer up.

I decided to do two logs.  I did the game i once got working (ket) and a game which is horizontal orientation. I thought it might be easier getting down to the issue with multiple logs?

Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

For pre-HD 5000 cards you must run GM with admin rights.

I get an entirely different error when running as administrator. I'll post a log of it tonight after work.

My setup is as followed:
Windows 10 64bit Home Editon
Groovymame 0.200 installed on top of Mame 0.200
Video game is a Radeon 2250. Using the DMS-59 port with the DMS-59 -> 2 Male VGA cable.
Arcade connected through JPAC. Sega New Astro City -> Windows 10 PC

1) Frankly, I'm shocked that card works at all with Windows 10.  I'm pretty sure ATI never supported that GPU on Windows 10 at all.

2) GroovyMAME now comes with a complete distribution package.  You don't need to install it over standard baseline MAME.

3) I think the reason you're having installation problems is because you're using an ancient video card and old CRT Emudriver.  The recommended configuration these days is a Radeon HD 5000 or newer for Windows 7/10 along with CRT Emudriver 2.0...  http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=295

Note that the Radeon HD 5000 series was first available in 2009 so it's nearly 10 years old.  The card you have is even older, from around 2005.

Just wanted to say thank you for this post, after sifting through guides and posts, you answered a lot of my questions. Everything I hear about GM has been good, but man, trying to find up to date guides...thats another story, lol.

My setup is very similar to yours, W10, Mame 200 etc. I'm using a 7570.
I wrote up a guide which doesn't cover EVERYTHING in particular (as it covers RetroArch) but I do go over a few gotchas when setting up CRT EmuDriver/
